Gardnerville kicks off the weekend of lights with their Heritage Park Tree lighting, caroling, and fireworks. Carson City, Genoa, and Minden follow suit Friday with their own lighting festivities. Karaoke at Living the Good Life and Jimmy G’s Cigar Bar are the perfect place to bust out your rendition of ‘Santa Baby’ or ‘Rockin Around the Christmas Tree.’ Bundle up if you’d care to join Muscle Powered on their easy hike around Riverview Park. V&T Railroad partners with community college to transform Carson City train station
Submitted by editor on Wed, 11/30/2016 - 11:58amThe Virginia & Truckee Railroad has partnered with an architectural design class at Truckee Meadows Community College for a conceptual redesign of the V&T’s depot in Carson City. The project provided an opportunity for 16 students to take their imaginations inside the classroom out to the community – in this case for ideas to transform the current depot into a memorable train station.

WNC Main Gallery to Show ‘Dirty Diapers/Rabbit Ears’ through Feb. 3
Submitted by editor on Wed, 11/30/2016 - 12:09amCuriosity drives Jill Brugler artistically, and she hopes “Dirty Diapers/Rabbit Ears” will attract the curious to the Western Nevada College’s Main Gallery to see her clay and ceramic exhibit.
“Dirty Diapers/Rabbit Ears” is opening Wednesday, Nov. 30 in Carson City and the exhibit will be shown through Friday, Feb. 3.

Senator Square: Carson High counselors say now is the time to prepare for college

Holiday Travel: Three Sierra storms expected for Thanksgiving week
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Tue, 11/22/2016 - 2:26amThe first of three winter storms will move into the Sierra tonight, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a Winter Weather Advisory for the Sierra from 7 p.m. until 10 a.m. Wednesday.
Though the first system is considered weak to moderate, it will cause significant travel delays in the Sierra due to the Thanksgiving holiday week and heavy traffic volume, according to the weather service.

Hundreds of Children Benefit From First Independent Bank and Hot August Nights Foundation Coat Drives
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Fri, 11/18/2016 - 9:46amFirst Independent Bank customers, employees, and the general public, collected nearly 200 new coats for Northern Nevada children to keep them warm this winter.
The coats were collected during a month-long coat drive involving all seven First Independent Bank locations, including one in Carson City. The 192 coats collected were donated to the Boys and Girls Club of Truckee Meadows.

The annual Salvation Army Turkey Drive runs 6 a.m. until six this evening: drop off your donation at the Max Casino in Carson or at the C.O.D. Casino in Minden. Get to know Supervisor Karen Abowd during her monthly walkabout at the Community Center; head inside to get a peek at the new art exhibit in the Sierra Room while you’re there. The Craft Fair at Carson High School is a local favorite: over 125 vendors, music, and pictures with Santa. It starts tonight and continues tomorrow.

Earlier this year, Nevada declared an emergency teacher shortage, allowing teachers licensed in other states to receive provisional licenses to immediately start instruction in the Silver State.

El Charro Avita always has Monday Night Football specials for those who want to watch the Bengal/Giants game, but the High Sierra Swing Dance Club meets there as well for their weekly club meet-up and dancing.
