Carson City weather: Winds to ease tonight and return Saturday with valley rain, mountain snow
High winds whipping through Carson City Friday morning have snapped trees and brought down some power lines throughout the area. A High Wind Warning remains in effect until 5 p.m. today. Another strong wind event is anticipated Saturday ahead of a storm system that is expected to bring valley rain and high mountain snow, providing some relief to fires burning in nearby Washoe Valley and at south shore Lake Tahoe.
In Carson City, winds have been averaging 18 to 20 mph, gusting to 32 mph throughout the morning, According to CarsonWeather.com, the highest wind speed thus far in Carson City was clocked at 41 mph and that happened just before 1 a.m. The weather services advises the possibility for gusts up to 65 in the valleys, and near 85 mph in wind prone areas. Some rain showers were moving into Carson City Friday afternoon at around 12:20 p.m.
Aviation delays and cancellations remain possible as well as reroutes on area roads due to winds and local fires. Please check road conditions and flights before you head out today.
According to the weather service, winds should become less active after 5 p.m. remaining breezy until the next system arrives Saturday afternoon. Expect hazardous the potential for damaging gusts and poor road travel in wind prone areas on Saturday afternoon as well, according to the weather service.
A window for travel with less wind and rain looks to be Friday night through Saturday morning, according to the weather service.
The next system will bring high elevation snow to the Sierra, arriving Saturday afternoon and snowing off and on through Sunday night, according to the weather service. Snowfall will be limited to just the highest passes through Sunday and then potentially impact other highly traveled passes Sunday evening into Monday, according to the weather service.
In Carson City, Carson Valley and Dayton areas, the weather service says we can expect showers off and on beginning Saturday afternoon and lasting through Sunday.
While the weather service isn’t currently forecasting rivers in the Northern Sierra and Northeast California to reach flood stage, it does advise people to monitor river forecasts for updates. Heavy showers could result in urban and poor drainage flooding in western Nevada. Increased flows along the Truckee and Carson Rivers are expected.
