Carson City Weather: Second round of strong winds arriving today with rain and Sierra snow
The second round of storms is expected to arrive late Saturday afternoon in Carson City bringing rain and strong, gusty winds that could bring down tree limbs and power lines, according to the National Weather Service. There’s also concern that rain could cause flash flooding in the Little Valley Fire area in Washoe Valley and Emerald Fire area at south shore Lake Tahoe.
The weather service has issued a Flash Flood Watch for late this afternoon through early Sunday morning for these fire areas. Rainfall rates may exceed one inch in three hours on the burn scars that could trigger debris flows and rock falls, according to the weather service.
These rock falls and debris flows may affect area homes and highways including I-580, Franktown Road and California Highway 89.
Winds will increase by early afternoon, prompting a High Wind Warning for much of the region until 11 p.m. Winds will be from the southwest, 25 to 40 mph with gusts to 75 mph, locally stronger gusts up to 90 mph in wind prone areas, according to the weather service.
Travel in high profile vehicles is not recommended during the High Wind Warning period. Tree and fence damage is possible during the strongest winds this evening with scattered power outages possible.
The wind could produce significant damage to trees and property. The weather service advises to avoid walking in areas near large trees.
If you haven’t already, bring in the loose outdoor items such as patio furniture, trash cans and Halloween decorations. Secure the trampoline and bring in the pets.
In the event of power outages, the weather service advises to have extra food and water on hand as well as flash lights with batteries and candles.
Another round of strong wind is forecast Sunday into Sunday evening, which may produce similar impacts as those anticipated for Saturday.
Sierra road travel delays are likely due to periods of heavy rain and high elevation snow late this afternoon through Sunday night. Snowfall will be limited to just the highest passes through Sunday and then potentially impact some of the more highly traveled passes Sunday evening into Monday morning. Periods of intense rainfall may create mud or rock slides in some areas.
Heavy showers could result in urban and poor drainage flooding in western Nevada including around Carson City and Reno. Increased flows along the Truckee and Carson rivers are expected.
