Eagle Valley Trails Committee Receives the 2017 DeBoer Award
Lynn Zonge and Mark Kimbrough accepted the 2017 DeBoer award from the Nevada Chapter of the American Planning Association for excellence in planning, outstanding rural on Oct. 4, 2017.
In 2013 a group of citizens, seeing a need for a “non-urban” trail system not addressed in Carson City’s Master Plan, formed the Eagle Valley Trails Committee (EVTC). The EVTC is comprised of community members from different trail user groups including runners, equestrians, mountain bikers, hikers, walkers and motorized users.
OUR MISSION : To work with the community and land management agencies to implement a public inventory, review and analysis process for the current trail system AND : To work with the community and the appropriate land management agencies to implement agency approved plans to improve the trail system within the Eagle Valley.
This committee reached out to private land owners, met with Federal, State and Carson City agencies regarding their trail systems, inventoried the hillside trail systems, identified opportunities for connectivity in the trail system, identified design and maintenance standards and strategies, and identified funding opportunities.
The Committee assembled this information into the “Community Trail Inventory, Review, Evaluation and Use Needs Assessment Report” (EVTC Report), completed February 2017 which can be found at carsoncitytrails.org. This report, a grassroots effort, was nominated by Hope Sullivan from Community Development for the Outstanding Rural Project Award.
The EVTC presented its report to a joint meeting of the City's Parks & Recreation Commission and the Open Space Committee in May 2017, resulting in the Commission and Committee requesting that staff work with the EVTC in an effort to transition the work into the City’s Unified Pathways Master Plan (UPMP).
The EVTC has also presented its report to, and is working with the USFS, BLM, Nevada State Lands, and Western Nevada College to implement recommendations on those lands.
