Clouds around Carson City may limit 'Supermoon' eclipse viewing Sunday

Sky watchers take note: A total lunar eclipse will happen across the western U.S. Sunday evening, which coincides with the moon’s closest point to the Earth in its orbit, also known as the “super moon.”

The downside, however, is a large band of cirrus clouds is expected to spread across western Nevada Sunday night that may limit or obscure viewing of the eclipse, depending on the thickness of the cloud cover, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Gusty southwest winds will continue through Wednesday, bringing dangerous boating conditions at Lake Tahoe and Pyramid and areas of blowing dust elsewhere, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

The winds will also bring additional smoke from the Rough, Lumpkin, Valley, and Butte fires across the Sierra and northern Nevada.

Forecasters update coming El Nino: 95 percent likely, will weaken through spring 2016

A U.S. government weather forecaster on Thursday said El Nino conditions would gradually weaken through the northern hemisphere spring after peaking in late fall or early winter.

The National Weather Service's Climate Prediction Center said the likelihood that El Nino conditions would persist through the northern hemisphere winter was about 95 percent, up from a more than 90 percent chance in last month's forecast.
