Carson City weather: Winter storm to impact travel during Thanksgiving holiday period
A winter storm will arrive in the Sierra and Carson City region beginning Tuesday, bringing wind, snow and very cold temperatures that could make travel difficult, according to the National Weather Service.
The cold front will sweep south during the day Tuesday and usher in much colder air along with periods of snow. The weather service is uncertain at this time regarding snow amounts, but gusty winds combined with the snow will likely impact travel in the Sierra and valleys, with strong cross winds up to 50 mph on north to south oriented roads.
In the higher elevations of the Sierra, one foot or more is possible from Tuesday through late Wednesday. In the Sierra valleys, six inches is possible. In the lower valleys of northeast California and Western Nevada, up to 3 inches of snow is passible. These amounts could increase, the weather service advises.
Those attempting to travel in the Sierra on US-50, US-395, I-80, and California Highways 36, 44, 70, 88 and 89 will likely encounter snow as low as 2000 feet, leading to a significantly longer commute than normal. Winds will also cause highway restrictions for high profile vehicles on US-395 and I-80, according to the weather service.
Meanwhile, much colder air will settle over the region Tuesday night into Friday. Highs will be as much as 15 degrees below normal, reaching only the 20s in the Sierra valleys and lower to mid 30s in Western Nevada and Northeast California. This will be the coldest air so far this season and preparations should be made now to avoid cold related problems.
For the Carson City, Carson Valley and Dayton areas, sunny skies are expected Monday with a high near 60. Weather conditions are expected to change later in the evening. Wind, rain and snow showers will arrive Tuesday, with a daytime high temperature around 40. Snow is likely to arrive by the evening, with snow showers Wednesday and a high of 30 and a low of 15. There’s a slight chance of snow showers Thanksgiving Day and through the weekend, with highs in the 30s.
