Carson City area weather: Hot through Saturday with cool temperatures by midweek
Hot, near record temperatures are expected through Saturday across the Eastern Sierra and Western Nevada, according to the National Weather Service. Highs will near be in the mid 90s in Carson City to near 100 across Western Nevada valleys and the deserts of Northeast California.
Eastern Sierra Valleys can expect widespread highs in the 80s. A cooling trend then begins Sunday with more significant cooling by Monday and Tuesday as low pressure develops along the Pacific Northwest Coast. Highs will be as much as 20 degrees cooler for the middle of next week compared to Friday and Saturday.
In the Carson City region, high temperatures will be in the mid 90s Friday and Saturday, the low 90s Sunday and the low 80s by Monday with a slight chance of thunderstorms.
As the trough develops, winds will increase early next week with the strongest winds likely on Monday from the west to southwest. Peak gusts are expected to be 30-40 mph across many valley locations with higher gusts up to 60 mph possible across the Sierra ridges.
The high heat will not be in favor of firefighters battling the Butte Fire burning in the Sierra southwest Carson City in Amador and Calaveras counties off of Butte Mountain Road east of Jackson. As of Thursday night the fire has grown to 14,700 acres and is just 10 percent contained.
Road Closures in Amador County are: Clinton Road at Butte Mountain Road (Both Ends) Butte Mountain Road Cutoff at Clinton Road. Amador Lane at Clinton Road, Electra at SR 49, Ponderosa Road at Tabeaud, Access to Lake Tabeaud is closed; Hwy 88 at W. Clinton Road, Hwy 88 at Irish Town Road, Hwy 88 at Tabeaud Road, Hwy 88 at Aqueduct Circle, Highway 88 at Mount Zion.
In Calaveras County: SR 26 and Hwy 49 at Mokelumne Hill East to Ridge Road, SR 26 and Ponderosa Road, SR 26 and Jesus Maria; SR 26 at Hwy 49, SR 26 at Lower Dorray Road.
The National Weather Service in Reno says a large plume of smoke from the Butte Fire was headed toward Alpine County, and may bring reduced visibility and poor air quality. The smoke may also spread to portions of Douglas and Lyon counties before midnight Thursday, according to the weather service. Haze and smoke has been building along the western Sierra slopes that may work into the Lake Tahoe Basin as well.
