I just read an interesting article called “How are gardeners adapting to climate change?” in the British magazine “Gardens Illustrated.” The authors interviewed head gardeners at National Trust properties across the United Kingdom. All the gardeners were seeing effects of climate change such as “floods to drier summers.”

Hello fellow anglers. I had to stop and realize what time of year it was the other day. I was in Tahoe for business and had brought a heavy jacket as well as a dress jacket for work.

Unless you live under a rock you are certainly aware that exercise is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. Despite that only 30% of the US population is currently achieving the daily recommended amount of physical activity. You may not be aware though that most fitness centers report losing approximately 50% of their members each year. Elite gyms will attempt to mitigate the loss of their members by offering programs that encourage attendance and a sense of community at their facility, such as group exercise classes. These elite gyms will still see losses of approximately 30% of their members yearly.

The next meeting of the Carson City Board of Supervisors will take place on Thursday, March 5, beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Sierra Room of the Community Center located at 851 East William Street.

Items on the docket for the meeting include an increase in water rates, proposed marijuana dispensary changes in allowed operating hours, trick-or-treating a day before Halloween, and more.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the South Carson Complete Streets Project groundbreaking ceremony, the International Film Festival held Friday and Saturday at the Carson City Community Center and Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada celebrate National Girl Scout Cookie weekend with door-to-door cookie sales. Heading into the backend of the work week, events lined up Thursday include day 1 of the 7th annual International Film Festival at the Carson City Community Center, a cardio and strength connection class offered through Carson Tahoe Health and Wellness, a free information session on the legal and financial aspects of long-term care hosted by Carson Tahoe Care Center, the Carson City GOP will host a meeting to discuss precinct organization, plus trivia night at Bella Vita Bistro, a Muscle Powered afternoon hike and a lecture on women’s suffrage movement history in Nevada. Sonoma Park in Carson City will be closed from March 9-27 for seasonal maintenance and repairs, while efforts to renovate the turf, address drainage issues and repair deficiencies related to the playground and amenities in the park are made.

Somebody simply must stop the bleed, and Sierra Lutheran High School is responding to that challenge. Recently, the faculty and staff of the Christian college prep high school in Carson City became the first schoolwide staff in Douglas County to take part in the national bleed kit training being promoted by The National Stop the Bleed Campaign.

Mary Liveratti, former president of AARP Nevada, will lead a discussion about the runaway cost of prescription drugs at Monday's Democratic luncheon. She will present the stunning documentary Big Pharma: Market Failure, which covers the pharmaceutical industry's role in the ever-spiraling cost of medicine.

Carson City Supervisor Lori Bagwell, local Hookah Lounge business owner Nathaniel Killgore and resident Aaron Sims have all thrown their hats in the ring for the position of Carson City Mayor. Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell is not seeking reelection after 11 years.

The Dayton Regional Advisory Board will be discussing a new development plan for the Sage Vista subdivision at their upcoming March 4 meeting.

An injured Siberian Husky that was saved from drowning by South Lake Tahoe Police officers and others after being found in the freezing cold lake water Saturday, sadly died later Sunday at a local veterinarian hospital. The police department and the dog's owners say they are grateful for all those who helped rescue the animal in the unfortunate incident.

Geocaching is a real-world treasure hunt with millions of caches hidden worldwide; in fact, there are hundreds of them hidden right here in Carson City. This Saturday, Feb. 29, join the Park Rangers on an interactive adventure searching for three caches hidden within Riverview Park.

Time flies as the sun shines going into the last Monday in February. Expect daytime highs around 60. Activities include are a political luncheon with Clint Koble, a primary candidate for the 2nd Congressional District, plus yoga, fitness events, West Coast swing dance lessons at Carson Lanes and more.

I turned my sprinklers on this past week. So did my gardening neighbor Roni. Her comment was “Ugh!” Mine was “On. Off. Drain. Repeat.” Turning drip systems and sprinklers on and off is tedious, but necessary. We haven’t had enough rain or snow to thoroughly soak the ground.

Retired Carson City teacher and longtime animal welfare advocate Lisa Schuette has announced her candidacy for Carson City Supervisor Ward 4. She is running for the seat currently held by John Barrette who is not seeking another term.

Clint Koble, a Democratic primary candidate for the 2nd Congressional District, will be the featured speaker at the next Democratic luncheon. Koble was also the CD2 Democratic candidate in 2018.
