Cracker Box diner celebrates 35th year with accolades from governor, congressman and city
Long time Carson City restaurant, The Cracker Box, is celebrating 35 years in business over Mother’s Day weekend. To mark the occasion Carson City Mayor Robert Crowell and the Board of Supervisors joined a representative from Congressman Mark Amodei's office to recognize the restaurant Friday morning with certificates and congratulations.
Amodei, a regular for breakfast at the Cracker Box when he's not in Washington, D.C., offered a certificate of achievement to the staff, and Gov. Brian Sandoval even prepared a proclamation to the Carson City breakfast and lunch restaurant recognizing its 35 years of being a local favorite, Carson City dining establishment.
The “Box” opened on May 10, 1980 and has been perking along ever since. The favorite of locals and visitors alike, the Cracker Box serves breakfast and lunch 7 days a week.
The Cracker Box has received numerous awards and honors over the years, including Trip Advisor’s Certificate of Excellence, the Nevada Appeal’s Reader’s Choice for Best Breakfast and was featured in AAA’s VIA magazine as the “Best Breakfast in the West.”
Owner Jerry Massad credits much of the success to great employees. “I have been so lucky over the years to have a great staff, they make this place tick. I couldn’t do it without them” he said, adding, “they like what they do and they do it well.”
He also gives credit to customers. “Like we say on our menu, the only thing that matches the quality of our food, is the quality of our customers.”
When the Cracker Box first opened in 1980 it was much smaller, seating just 24 people. Massad was the cook and there was just one waitress.
The place is bigger now, but the quality is still the same. The Cracker Box employees pride themselves on serving piping hot, hearty, and made from scratch breakfasts and lunches seven days a week. The Box makes its own sausage gravy, cures its own corned beef and hand dips the chicken fried steaks. Plus all soups and salad dressings are made in house, from scratch and juices are squeezed to order.
The Cracker Box is located at 403 E. William Street in Carson City. The Box serves breakfast and lunch 7 days a week from 6am to 2pm.
Customers can enter a Breakfast of the Month Club raffle during the weekend, with the winner receiving a free breakfast a month for one year.
