Carson City area Boy Scouts to host annual car and truck show fundraiser

Boy Scouts of America Troop 33, now in its 77th year, will host its 3rd annual “Send a Scout to Camp” Car and Truck Show Fundraiser on August 13 at Fuji Park in Carson City.

All summer long, Thursday nights have been known for the Silver Dollar Classic Car meet-ups with upwards of 80 vehicles showing off their chrome and fuzzy dice at various venues throughout the valley. This Thursday’s cruise night kicks off a weekend of nostalgic car fun. Head to the Plaza Events Center at 5 p.m. for the annual Cruise Night Show and Shine, Music and Spirits and hold onto your bobby sox.

I really hope I’m not required to choose a favorite event. I would be hard pressed to choose between the Nevada Day Parade and the annual Taste of Downtown. Luckily, I can adore them both, and for much the same reason. They are a celebration of community, of Carson City, of our historic downtown and all that it has to offer. In addition to 'The Taste', the Brewery Arts Center goes country with the Southern Drawl Band on its outdoor stage, and Madam Curry leads another downtown Ghost Walk. Back to back weekends filled with events at Mills Park in Carson City culminates this weekend with the annual RSVP 4th of July Carnival and Celebration, which launches Friday.

This will be the 24th year that RSVP has sponsored the holiday weekend carnival, complete with fireworks on Monday, July 4, plus plenty of rides, music, food booths, arts and crafts vendors and demonstrations throughout the weekend.

Motor Officer Challenge returns with action packed events Friday and Saturday at Mills Park

Motor officers from around the country return to Carson City this week to train and compete in the 13th annual Extreme Motor Officer Training Challenge at Mills Park.

The event runs Thursday through Saturday at Mills Park with Thursday a practice day for the competitors. The big events that bring the most spectators and participants will be on Friday and Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and feature music, vendors, food, demonstrations and contests.

As soon as John Rupert, 15, could walk, he started learning the traditional dances of his Native American forefathers.

“We have all my regalia in all different sizes,” said John, the son of a Washoe father and Paiute mother. “I think it’s cool. Not many people can say they go to powwows on the weekends.”
