High Sierra Brewing Co. wins gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival

High Sierra Brewing Co., in Carson City took home a gold medal at the 2013 Great American Beer Festival competition held recently in Denver.

Presented by the Brewers Association, GABF is the largest national beer competition that recognizes the most outstanding beers produced in the United States. The top three winners in the competition’s 84 beer-style categories were announced Oct. 12 at the Great American Beer Festival awards ceremony held at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver, Colo.

Overwhelming response for Sept. 16 showing of movie 'Trans' requires a larger theater, tickets on sale

For one night only, an opportunity to see the movie “Trans” takes place in Carson City on Monday, September 16 at 5:30 p.m. at the Galaxy Theater, 4000 South Curry Street. When first announced, the event quickly filled theater capacity and “sold out,” but multiplex Galaxy quickly scheduled the screening in a a larger theater, and there are now ample seats available.

Carson City motorcycle officers participate in Milwaukee Harley riding competition

Thursday, Aug. 29 through Saturday, Aug. 31, Carson City sheriff's patrol motor officers Sgt. Mike Cullen and Deputy Joseph Trotter will represent Nevada's capital city in Milwaukee, Wis., during the Harley-Davidson Police Riding and Skills competition.

This is a unique event as in addition to competing against more than 110 other police motorcycle officers from throughout the United States, the two will also participate in training classes on escort and riding techniques as well as motorcycle maintenance.

Tahoe Hockey Partners, LLC announced today that newly formed Lake Tahoe Blue will play their inaugural Junior A hockey season at the South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena as part of the Pacific Division of the Western Conference of the Western States Hockey League (WSHL). League preseason games start September 20 and the regular season starts October 4.

Gold Star Peak dedication Sept. 6 to honor fallen South Lake Tahoe area soldiers

With the assistance of the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit and a determined committee, an unnamed peak on the North Shore of the Lake Tahoe Basin has been renamed “Gold Star Peak” in honor of soldiers from the area that paid the ultimate price in Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, and the War on Terrorism.

A ceremony to dedicate Gold Star Peak will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 6, at Lakeview Commons in South Lake Tahoe.

Nevada Day pow wow organizers seek community sponsors for 30th event

Organizers of the 30th annual La Ka Lel Be Pow Wow to be held in Carson City during the Nevada Day weekend say the event is taking shape and are looking for sponsors and raffle donations to help bring the event to its fullest.

The pow wow began 30 years ago at the Carson Indian Colony. It is and has always been a part of the Nevada Day celebrations, said co-organizer Brandi Colunga.

However, through the years, some of those who participated in organizing it have stepped down. So, along with Martin Montgomery, the two are hoping to continue the tradition.

Nevada and California agencies to participate in hazardous materials drill at Lake Tahoe

There will be a regional hazardous materials (hazmat) exercise Thursday at Diamond Peak Ski Resort on the north shore of Lake Tahoe.

The exercise begins 9 a.m. will run throughout the day. The drill is organized by the 92nd Civil Support Team from Las Vegas. Other entities participating will be the 9th Civil Support Team from Los Angeles, Placer County HAZMAT Team, Tahoe Douglas Bomb Squad, Washoe County Consolidated Bomb Squad, and North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District.

Before the film, at 6 p.m., the cast of Proscenium Players "12 Angry Jurors" will make an appearance, in costume and in character. The director of the play, which opens August 16 at Silver State Charter School, will also be on hand to answer questions.

Food and clothing drives on Saturday to benefit Carson City families in need

A food drive that brings federal employees together to collect food for those hungry in Carson City will be held Saturday following a successful event last weekend that netted more than 700 pounds in donations. Also underway Saturday is a clothing drive for families in need at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The “Feds Feed Families” drive will have a booth and food drop-off area at Grocery Outlet, 1831 North Carson Street this Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

C-SPAN programs featuring Carson City to air this weekend

Carson City will be featured on the C-SPAN network's two channels this weekend after their visit to the capital city earlier this month.

In addition to having feature stories sprinkled in throughout the weekend on the respective networks, both American History TV and Book TV, there will be a block of programming where all of the respective Carson City pieces for their networks will air, said C-SPAN spokeswoman Laura Finch.
