The Carson City Council of the United States Navy League will celebrate its 30th Anniversary at our meeting on Wednesday, September 17, 2014. The Dinner and meeting will be held in the Banquet Room at Casino Fandango, 3800 S. Carson St., Carson City. The social hour will be at 5:30 PM and the dinner hour will begin at 6:15 PM. Attendees can access the Casino Buffett from the Banquet Room.
Mayor Bob Crowell, the Council’s first president will speak and hopefully be joined by some of the other original members of the council to help us celebrate the occasion!

Two recent solar storms may produce northern lights visible over Northern Nevada on Friday and Saturday.
NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center predicts that the two solar eruptions that happened earlier this week will travel past Earth, producing geomagnetic storms — explosions of magnetic field and plasma from the Sun's corona out into space.

Nevada’s faith leaders from various traditions will join together to pray for the welfare of the Silver State at the Governor’s Mansion in Carson City on Wednesday, Sept. 17 as a part of Nevada sesquicentennial celebrations.

This multi-faith Service will include prayers by Christian (various denominations), Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Jewish, Baha’i, Native American, etc., leaders. A “Nevada 150 Signature Event” the gathering is coordinated by religious statesman Rajan Zed.

A Reno couple pled guilty Wednesday in a Sacramento federal court to possessing counterfeit U.S. currency and counterfeit or unauthorized access devices, U.S. Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner said.

William Theodore Lewis, 50, and Lori Marie Dahl, 50, a married couple, remain in custody and are scheduled to be sentenced by Judge Kimberly J. Mueller on Dec. 10, 2014. Lewis and Dahl each face a maximum statutory penalty of 25 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and five years of supervised release.

Northern Nevada Development Authority, Economic Development Authority of Western Nevada, and Nevada Industry Excellence have partnered again to bring the 2014 Manufacturing in Nevada Conference.

This year’s conference will be held on Oct. 1-2 at John Ascuaga’s Nugget in Sparks. The event has been expanded to feature an Unmanned Aircraft Systems/Unmanned Aerial Vehicles conference with some of the field’s top experts, as well as showcasing exhibit booths both days.

In partnership with Friends of Nevada Wilderness and the U.S. Forest Service, “Family Fun Saturdays” returns to the Nevada State Museum in Carson City with a program to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Wilderness Act Saturday, Sept. 13.

From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., guests will explore how to set up a tent, leave no trace, name that animal, be safe and find directions using a compass. Visitors will learn skills to help plan their own camping trips to Nevada’s wild lands this fall.

Climate change is hurting reproduction of the endangered Devils Hole pupfish, threatening the survival of this rare species that has numbered as few as 35 individuals, new research by the University of Nevada, Reno and Desert Research Institute shows.

Scientists report that geothermal water on a small shelf near the surface of an isolated cavern in the Nevada desert where the pupfish live is heating up as a result of climate change and is likely to continue heating to dangerous levels.

A rally to call attention to maternal health care issues will be held Sept. 1, Labor Day at the Nevada State Legislative Building in Carson City. Thousands of families and healthcare providers in all 50 states will rally to call attention to what advocates say is a crisis in American maternal health care.

Though the U.S. has the highest maternity care costs in the world, it ranks 45th in maternal safety, according to data from the United Nations, which lists the United States maternal death rate as tied with that of Iran and Hungary.

Attendees of the Valhalla Art, Music and Theater Festival at Lake Tahoe learn how to use a cross-cut saw, the primary tool used today to keep trails open and accessible in the Wilderness. The event celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the 1964 National Wilderness Preservation Act.

Students of Stephanie Fitch, of Dayton, Nev., a teacher at Dayton High School in Dayton, will be getting some valuable lessons this coming school year in learning the Holocaust as a result of their teacher having completed top-notch training this summer from educators of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.

Fitch was one of more than 200 participants who attended the 18th annual Arthur and Rochelle Belfer National Conference for Educators, an invitation-only three-day workshop for teachers hosted by the Museum in mid-July.

A Sonora woman accused of embezzling more than $42,000 from the Yosemite National Park Child Care Center, was summoned Tuesday to appear in federal court on the charges after a grand jury investigation and indictment, according the the U.S. Justice Department.

Baldini’s Casino in Sparks has begun work on its latest addition, High Sierra Brewery, a 15-barrel brew house and restaurant slated to open in the fall of 2014.

Development of the brewery is the result of a partnership between Baldini’s and High Sierra Brewing Company owner Jim Phalan. Together, Phalan and Baldini’s General Manager Craig Soper have recruited award-winning brewer Tim Mason as Head Brewer for the new establishment. The brewery relocated after leaving Carson City earlier this year.

CPAC Athletics, a recreation league program that brings girls from around Carson City for soccer matches, has kicked off for the season. Practice is underway and the first games begin Aug. 16.

The coaching staff is guided by the CPAC training and coaching curriculum, which is based on United States Soccer Federation and National Soccer Coaches Association of America guidelines. Go here and here for more information.

A 32-year-old Tuolumne County man, Keith Matthew Emerald, has been indicted on four counts of allegedly starting last year's 250,000-acre Rim Fire, the largest fire in the Sierra Nevada in recorded history. United States Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner and U.S. Forest Service Pacific Southwest Regional Forester Randy Moore announced the indictment Thursday.

The Rim Fire, which burned for nine weeks and sent heavy smoke that choked Carson City, Carson Valley and Lake Tahoe air for weeks, included large areas in the Stanislaus National Forest and Yosemite National Park.

The websites, www.preventsexualviolenceNV.org and www.stepupstopviolence.org, define sexual assault and consent and offer approaches for individuals, students, and community members to safely intervene when observing a potentially high-risk situation.
