Veterans Day, in my mind, is the most important day of the year. Even before “We” had a country, our military personnel and their families were making great efforts to secure our freedoms and safety. Without Veterans we would not have a country. For that we owe a debt of gratitude beyond any other.

The staff of Carson High School and Douglas High School have agreed to a rivalry basketball game to be played Nov. 19 at DHS. The staff basketball game is a fundraiser for the Peace Officer’s Memorial Fund.
Multiple members of each of the school’s staff will be on hand to battle it out on the basketball court and continue the rivalry, but for a good cause. Come support the Senators or the Tigers and be sure to wear your favorite school’s colors.

Placed along Carson City's downtown streets ahead of Nevada Day, locals and visitors have since been greeted by the many faces of the people who live, play and work in Nevada’s capital city, thanks to the Carson City Visitors Bureau.

Carson City Mayor Bob Crowell announced his intention to run for a third term this morning at a meeting of minority business leaders at La Posada Real restaurant.

"We are going to build a community for the future, and we aren't going to leave anybody behind," Crowell said.

The City of Carson City is asking our community to take a few minutes to participate in a survey.

As of Saturday, I am retiring as the Outdoor Editor for Carson Now and a very special outdoor photographer (my wife Elaine) will also be retiring.
It's been a great run, full of great memories, but sooner or later all good things must come to an end, and Oct. 31 is that special time for the two of us.

Nevada, after 151 years of statehood you’re looking better than ever and still going strong! You’re marching into the future handling the many changes that have taken place since 1864 with grace and style. I’d like to particularly honor those who were behind those changes – all the folks who have molded Nevada into the wonderful state we are today.

A rubber and plastic manufacturer will move its plastic division from California to Carson Valley in Douglas County and bring 40 jobs along with it, officials with Northern Nevada Development Authority announced Thursday.

VIP Rubber and Plastic has purchased a building near Johnson Lane and plans a Jan. 4, 2016 opening. The company's main manufacturing facility will remain in La Habra, Calif.

The Northern Nevada Development Authority announced Wednesday the launch of a new program that is designed to shorten the amount of time it takes for a company to acquire or build a new facility.

The Nevada Certified Site Program as part of their continuing effort to attract more businesses to the Silver State. The program is aimed to provide critical decision making information to business owners and site selectors to allow informed decisions, said NNDA Executive Director Robert Hooper.

I just found out I was nominated for the World Paddle Awards Sports Jr. of the Year again and was hoping you could help me garner the votes that I need to make it to the final round.

The World Paddler Awards are unique in the fact that it involves social media voting, as well as a panel of top paddling judges who also vote-each side weighed 50 percent. Last year, I was 2nd to last in social media voting, but made it to the top 3 with the judges panel, all without any international titles!

Locke and Betty Ray Lesch are longtime, generous supporters of their community and Carson Tahoe Health. Upon learning that the front entrance of the Carson City hospital was in critical need of renovation including a costly new door system to improve patient access and resist harsh weather elements, they donated $100,000 toward the project.

Last weekend HOSA members, also known as Future Health Professionals, volunteered at the RAM medical event held at Carson High School. HOSA students served as interpreters, place holders, registration assistants, dental scribes, and vision care assistants.

The students were able to put the skills that they learn in class to use. They also gained valuable experience by working alongside dentists, doctors, nurses, and optometrists. The RAM event served more than 900 people in the Carson City area.

About 70 Naval Jr. ROTC students and others had the honor and privileges of listening to a World War II veteran speak at Carson High School on Thursday. Charles Sehe, now 92, was a teenaged sailor on the USS Nevada when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor during World War II.

A strong El Niño is predicted to help ease drought conditions in some, but not all of California. The National Weather Service's Climate Prediction Center released their latest seasonal weather assessment on Thursday, and the news isn't very good for the Lake Tahoe Basin.

Here is this week's Nevada and Northern California fishing report for the week of Oct. 14, 2015 and beyond. As of Oct. 13, Nevada Department of Wildlife fishing reports for Western Nevada waters are not included.

The Junior Achievement "Be Entrepreneurial" course will be taught at Carson High School this Fall in all CHS Business classes. Bill Heitman and Ila Acchtabowski from Junior Achievement have been instrumental in making this happen.The course will be taught by professionals from Sierra Financial Advisors Sally Kaplan and Katie Coombs.  Junior Achievement is a non-profit youth organization founded in 1919 by Horace A. Moses, Theodore Vail, and Winthrop M. Crane.

All 2,300 Carson High School students will each receive a laptop during the week of Oct. 5-9 to be used at school and at home to enhance their learning opportunities. Beginning Monday at 7:45 a.m. and going throughout the day, all students will go to the library to receive their laptop. This process will be repeated again Tuesday through Thursday.

This is a reminder that Pyramid Lake, which is located about 30-35 miles north of Reno-Sparks, is now open to fishing for its super-sized Lahontan cutthroat trout that range in size and are can be 20 pounds or bigger. That large, desert lake (roughly the same surface size as Lake Tahoe) has a three-month trout closure, each year, from July 1 to Sept. 30.

“Are you exercising?” That’s one of the questions continually asked by doctors who believe strongly exercise will assure us a long and healthy life.

Sure, you can go to a gym (what did we do before gyms?) or you can participate in one of the best exercise routines of all — walking. Walking is easy on the body and allows one to stop and view the scenery, or as they say, “smell the roses.”

This week is the official Nevada Week of Respect. The purpose of this week is to promote respect as an antidote to bullying and cyberbullying. Here is what is going on at CHS to celebrate the Week of Respect:

• The American Sign Language club is going to be signing songs at lunch on Thursday.
• The Gay-Straight Alliance is going to be putting up a respect wall - a giant poster for people to write what they respect about someone else.
• There will be a daily announcement with a tip on being an upstanding young adult.

The Historical Marker Legacy Project, a part of Nevada’s year-long Sesquicentennial celebration of the State’s admission to the Union through more than 500 official, signature and legacy events, has been finished in record time thanks to the work of the Nevada 150 Commission, YESCO and other community partners.

On behalf of everyone at Catmandu, both two-legged and four-legged, I would like to thank the many people in our Carson City community that have helped us create, maintain, and improve our little haven for cats during the last 18 months.

Restoration of the historic 1875 steam locomotive “The Glenbrook” has been recognized with an international award from the Association of Tourist Railroads and Railway Museums.
The narrow gauge engine at the Nevada State Museum, Carson City debuted in May following 30 years of painstaking care to bring it back to authentic and historic condition, thanks to a generous grant from the E.L. Wiegand Foundation.

The tradition of homecoming is once again here at Carson High School. Congratulations to the following students who have been nominated by their senior classmates as queen and king candidates: Tess Corda, Paris Regan, Kassidy Cox, Delaney Fine, Lindy Lehman, Haley Gray, Ikela Lewis, Todd Lani, Asa Carter, Conner Pradere, Joe Nelson, and Eddie Duarte.

Carson High School has been back for three weeks and I think we are finally getting settled into new schedules, rekindling friendships, and getting acquainted with new teachers and students. However, our school year started with much sadness as our high school community lost one of our students in a tragic accident at Lake Tahoe.

Time for another wine walk, Carson City, thanks to the Downtown Business Association. Saturday, Sept. 5, the festivities begin at 1 p.m.

Grab a wine glass, map, and hand stamp at the Carson Nugget, Cactus Jack’s, Carson Jewelry and Loan, Touched by an Angel, or Bella Fiore. You have until 5 p.m. to hit as many stops as possible before the raffle begins. Every first Saturday over 30 shops, restaurants, businesses, and organizations stock up on wine and goodies and throw open their doors to the crowds of merry-makers. It's always a great reason to explore downtown.

Hello everyone and welcome back to a new year of Carson High School Senator news. While we took a break from this column this summer, we still had plenty of CHS students busy with school activities over the break. Thank you to the community for supporting students who participated in national competitions across the United States. The Senators were very well represented this summer.
