State awards $5.6 million to schools for mental health workers
Submitted by Brett Fisher on Wed, 01/13/2016 - 3:13pmThe Nevada Department of Education has awarded block grants to the neediest Nevada schools that will add a minimum of 161 social workers and other mental health professionals for immediate support of students in 132 schools statewide.
All eleven school districts that applied for the grant received funding, as well as six charter schools.

Auditions for the talent show will be on Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2:05 p.m. in the upstairs cafeteria at CHS. Audition applications can be picked up from room No. 243 or the office. The CHS talent show is only open to ninth through 12th graders at CHS and cash prizes are awarded. The CHS chapter of FBLA is hosting this event. For more information, contact Mrs. Golik at 283-1737.

Boys and Girls Clubs of Western Nevada travel in style, thanks to foundation grant
Submitted by editor on Fri, 01/08/2016 - 4:57pmThe E. L. Wiegand Foundation presented a $70,000 grant to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada to replace the organization’s aging vans following a visit to Carson City from Foundation President Kristen Avansino.
“Last fall I decided to visit the Club unannounced,” Avansino said. “It was my first visit to the new facility since I had not been able to visit the Club’s Teen Center grand opening. I toured the building with Program Director Matt Sampson and was truly impressed by his enthusiasm and assessments. The building was well maintained and, obviously, well used.”

Hats For The Homeless makes first drop off at Carson City warming shelter

I am so happy to report we had five bags full of hats, scarfs, socks, gloves etc. Thanks to all who donated! We are keeping this drive going through at least January. It has proved to be an extra cold and wet winter already so please continue to drop off your donations at the following locations:

As in previous years, Christmas trees can be placed curbside on your regular trash collection day beginning Jan. 4 or taken to one of the drop-off locations.

During the 2014/2015 school year, Food For Thought’s Backpack Program distributed 13,509 bags of food that contained 54,036 meals to food insecure elementary, middle and high school children in Carson City. In the summer of 2015, the program provided free lunches to children at two locations within Carson City. The innovative 2015 Summer Program served over 4,500 meals.

We are looking to give these items out by Christmas but will keep the drive going through the winter as needed.

Nevada Humane Society column: Petco Foundation grant a blessing this holiday season

Our biggest struggle was always that so many people didn’t want to hear the bad things, yet they wanted to know if something was awry in their neighborhood. It was my job to give them that information. However, there’s also “fluffy” news which is that of happy, lighthearted content, and a “kicker” which is the uplifting or funny story that is typically aired at the end of the newscast.

Carson City wins tourism grants for mountain bike promotion, art walk, MAC and powwow

Gov. Mark Hutchison announced Wednesday.

Turkeys with all the trimmings, football games, and after-dinner naps will be served up across town. For those who would rather skip the fuss of a day spent in the kitchen, head on over to the Carson Nugget. The annual Community Feast fills up hearts and bellies. This evening, head downtown to celebrate at the Blue Bull, Westside Pour House, or Jimmy G's Cigar Bar.

Bay Area plastics company to relocate to Dayton; will add jobs to Northern Nevada region

Peterson Products will move its production facility and headquarters from Belmont, Calif., to Lyon County. The company recently leased a building and plans to create up to 70 jobs in Northern Nevada and adding another manufacturer to the region.
Senator Square: CHS students bring home top honors at speech and debate tourney

Twenty-one Carson High debaters competed on Friday and 16 students competed Saturday. Several students brought home top honors at this tournament which had roughly 470 entries. Competing in senior level debate for the first time Evan Cherpeski took tenth place in Public Forum speaking point.

Get in the spirit of giving with a new tattoo from Hooligan’s Ink to benefit the Austin House. For something less permanent, drop off a turkey at one of the contenders in the Salvation Army’s Battle of the Bars. Giving your time is valuable, too. The Muscle Powered Trash Mob meets once a month to help keep Carson’s trails clean and litter-free.
Historic Fourth Ward School Museum in Virginia City thanks community for successful year

Plans are underway for 2016 as the school enters its 140th year. The museum opens with a new exhibit in May 2016 and welcomes new Executive Director Lara Mather starting in January 2016.

Hundreds of crafters from all over Nevada and Northern California will fill both gymnasiums and halls of CHS. All money raised from the craft fair is donated to the various student clubs and organizations at CHS. Come support this annual tradition. Santa will also be on hand for photos.

Lake Tahoe ski resorts Heavenly and Northstar will launch their 2015-16 ski and snowboard season this Saturday, six days ahead of schedule, thanks to recent winter storms. This is the earliest the resorts have opened since 2012, officials said.
