I was honored to attend and cover Saturday's Vietnam War Remembrance and Welcome Home ceremony near the Nevada Vietnam War Memorial at Mills Park.

While there, a television image suddenly came to mind of a Vietnam War veteran sitting alone at the counter of a cafe while a young boy and his mother paid attention to a uniformed service man who had just come in.

The scene was from a television spot paid for by moments.org, a production of the INSP network, entitled "Thank You For Your Service (A Moment of Truth)."

Carson High School students are not only given myriad opportunities in which to participate, they are afforded these privileges by parents, teachers, and local and national non-profit organizations whose sole purpose is to give elementary, middle, and high school students the freedom to shine like the sun.

Nevada Health Centers’ Mammovan will make stops next month in Carson City and Yerington, officials announced Wednesday.

The mobile Mammovan aims to make mammography services accessible and convenient for women by visiting locations across Nevada. These screenings are primarily for women age 40 and older; however screenings will be provided to those younger than 40 who have a physician referral.

Community members from all over Carson City are getting ready to evaluate the Senior Project portfolios and speeches of Carson High School’s 2015-2016 soon to be graduating class, and it is an unforgettable highlight for everyone involved.

Carson High School’s HOSA — Future Health Professionals, one of four Career Technical Student Organizations that are part of the CHS Career and Technical Education program, sent more than 100 students to compete in the state HOSA Future Health Professionals Leadership Conference in Las Vegas this month thanks to a $4,400 grant from Partnership Carson City and fundraising efforts by students.

The Board of Directors, staff and children of Austin's House would like to thank the entire community for the tremendous support of our 2015 Appeal For Kids and 2016 Cowboy Mardi Gras fundraisers.

The 2015 Appeal For Kids ended on January 31 and our generous community stepped up once again to help local children in crisis. The Cowboy Mardi Gras fundraiser on February 26 was our best ever. Eeveryone had a great time for a great cause! Every dollar raised will be used to pay for operating expenses at Austin's House.

The fifth annual Nevada's Big Give charity drive will be held statewide on Thursday, March 10.

The Big Give is an online donation drive designed to raise as much money as possible in a 24-hour period for various statewide and local charities.

Everyone is on a metaphorical road to another destination every single moment of every single day from sunup to sunup again, and what is done along the way leaves a lasting imprint on both the doer and the receiver.

Like Karsen Law, an unexpected winner in the SkillsUSA photo competition, the students of Carson High School are continuously coming up with the unexpected and creating memorable opportunities for not only students to participate but the Carson City community as well.

“I must study politics and war, that our sons may have liberty to study mathematics and philosophy … geography … commerce and agriculture in order to give their children the right to study painting, poetry, music and architecture …”

Nevada’s welcome signs are about to get a complete refresh thanks to a Welcome to Nevada Design Contest. The contest, which is now underway, challenges Nevada’s high school artists to create official Welcome to Nevada signs that depict the Nevada brand and create a friendly welcome for travelers.

“No pain, no gain!” For years, exercise buffs have encouraged people to hit the gym with this phrase.
Would as many have been eager to get off the couch if the rallying cry had been, “All pain, no gain”?

Like all students of Carson High School over the past 16 years, Honors Student Tyler Warren, since his freshman year, thought about what he would be doing for his senior project, a graduation requirement for every student who hopes to receive a diploma from CHS.

Carson City Sheriff's Office Deputy Wayne Wheeler was recently honored by Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval for his 27 years in the military with a day proclaimed in his honor.

Getting involved with the activities at Carson High School, whether directly participating or simply watching, comes down to a decision to act upon the many opportunities available. Look at the exciting events in which students directly participate and businesses and parents indirectly participate and decide to engage.

Thomas Kraft considers his civilian life a work in progress. But to the case managers of the Northern Nevada Veterans Resource Center of America, he's been building a success story for himself since arriving in Carson City.

The 58 year-old United States Navy veteran and former submariner had been homeless for about 13 years when he arrived in Carson City last fall from Southern California, where he had lived for much of his civilian life.

Thank you everyone for participating in the 6th annual Carson High Safe & Sober 5k Run/Walk. We had a great turn-out with 104 sign-ups and 88 participants. The weather was the best it’s been for the past five years – even after many inches of snow earlier in the week!

Much of Carson High Schools’ success flows from the voluntary assistance of individuals and businesses selflessly giving of their time, their effort, and their resources to the advancement of Carson City’s youth and local community.

The Carson High Safe Grad Boosters held its annual Safe and Sober 5K Run/Walk Saturday at Carson High School. People of all ages participated in the event to raise awareness on the dangers of consuming alcohol and other drugs, and to promote responsible behavior from the Class of 2016.

The Sierra Nevada is finally having a better-than-average winter thanks in part to an El Niño weather pattern that formed in the Pacific Ocean. But what’s that mean for Lake Tahoe?

It is my pleasure to take over for Angila Golik as the new “Senator Square” column writer, which for me is right up there with winning an election, winning a game, and winning a prize in a contest all at the same time. Though I will not be reporting on cures for warts or offering advice on marriage, I will be delivering current news and upcoming events for Carson High School.

To a child placed in foster care, the world can be a cold, foreboding, lonely place. But thanks to donations from some local businesses, foster children in Carson City can find some comfort in a scary situation.

In December, the Carson City district office for the Nevada Division of Child and Family Services (DCFS) received donations from Carson-Tahoe Health and Kassity Management Group designed to help make the difficult transition into foster care a little bit easier for children.

If an employee receives tangible personal property such as skis, tires, clocks, television sets, radios, clothing, etc. and the value is not more than $400, then it can be tax free if it qualifies as an employee achievement award.

That is tax free of income, social security, medicare and unemployment taxes for both the employee and the employer. The award can not be cash, gift certificates, vacations, meals, lodging, tickets to events, stocks, bonds or other securities.

Something great is happening all around Carson City. All the little paths and trails that have been being built over the years are starting to join, transforming our little parks into a network of connecting trails. Night in the Country will celebrate its 15th year as Nevada's longest-running country music festival with the largest lineup in its history, featuring some of the biggest country artists in the world including headliners Tyler Farr, Chase Rice and Kip Moore. The festival, set for July 21 – 23 at the Lyon County Fairgrounds in Yerington, has also added Phil Vassar and Josh Abbott Band to the 2016 lineup.

National Honor Society is hosting its winter blood drive. It will take place on January 28 in the library from 7:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. It is open to community members.  Refreshments and a free cholesterol test is available with each donation. School districts in Carson City, Lyon and Douglas counties were among 11 statewide to receive grant money that will allow them to hire additional social workers and mental health professionals, the Nevada Department of Education announced Wednesday.

Customers of Jump Around Carson can now manage their transportation a little easier thanks to a new app available to download on their smart phones and tablets.

The new JAC app allows customers to better plan their travel routes in real time by tracking live bus departures and arrivals, view route maps and schedules, check fares, and receive arrival notifications.

The new app will be a featured topic at the bi-weekly city transportation meeting held at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Sierra Room at the Carson Community Center.
