Often referred to as the “coding gender gap,” computer science continues to be a field dominated by men. While women earn 57 percent of bachelor’s degrees nationally, they earn only 12 percent of computer science degrees.

According to University of Nevada, Reno Professor of Mathematics Education & Educational Equity Lynda Wiest, this gender gap is significant.

When the Federal Highway Administration needed to update it’s crucial and complicated 30-year-old formula for fuel consumption and vehicle operating cost predictions, it awarded the project to the University of Nevada, Reno’s renowned Pavements/Materials Program. The results of the study will give federal highway managers more accurate data as they seek to improve the nation’s transportation network.

The Sierra Nevada Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America celebrated six individuals, four Silver Spike awards and a number of other awards during its 2015 Silver Spikes banquet, held Thursday, Nov. 19, at the Peppermill Resort Spa Casino.

The 29th Annual Silver Spike Awards ceremony celebrated the PR and communications profession and professionals with the theme ‘Reimagine, Reinvent, Repurpose.’

CHS competed at the Spanish Springs tournament last weekend for speech and debate. Twenty-one Carson High debaters competed on Friday and 16 students competed Saturday. Several students brought home top honors at this tournament which had roughly 470 entries. Competing in senior level debate for the first time Evan Cherpeski took tenth place in Public Forum speaking point.

Construction management instructors Bob Ford, Nigel Harrison and welding instructor Randy Naylor at Western Nevada College have played critical roles in building the sets for Western Nevada Musical Theatre Company’s production of “Mary Poppins" that runs this weekend in Carson City.

Northern Nevada Development Authority on Thursday signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Lubelskie Region of Poland as part of an ongoing effort to increase economic ties between Poland and the Sierra region of Nevada.

Northern Nevada Development Authority will host 42 business leaders and government officials from Poland on Thursday who will visit Carson City among several stops as a follow-up to Gov. Brian Sandoval's European trade mission this summer.

Veterans Day Parades will be held in Virginia City and Reno on Wednesday. At the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, Virginia City holds its annual Veterans Day Parade to honor those who have served and currently serve our country.

Aqua Metals, Inc., which is commercializing a non-polluting electrochemical lead recycling technology called AquaRefining, announced Friday a $10 million loan from Green Bank in conjunction with a 90 percent loan guarantee from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development Agency for the development of its first AquaRefinery.

We all share a common problem in this world. That problem is called people. Most of our challenges and daily frustrations can be traced to a person. Is this truthful in the sense of being right or is this just our flawed human perception? The world, many might argue, is how we perceive it; that is in fact our reality. So, I challenge us to decide, what is the wise thing to do when a problem arises?

As the state of Nevada expands its manufacturing base, it also seeks to expand and enhance technical training opportunities for area residents. To that end, Western Nevada College has received a $150,000 Science and Technology grant to prepare residents for the new technical jobs.

Jonathan Shoff knows the value of a good job and a good education. Raised in Southern California primarily by his two grandfathers, one retired Navy and the other a pastor, Shoff moved to Carson City in 2000 to live with his uncle, and get back on the right track. Early brushes with the law for being, as he said, “young and dumb,” didn’t deter him from seeking a better life.

As more manufacturing businesses have moved to Northern Nevada, including Tesla in Storey County, Kayla Homme, 22, adjusted her career focus.

“I saw that opportunity,” she said. “I think it’s something like 70 percent men, so I figured as a woman I’d have a better chance.”

Carson City School District teacher expertise will be on display at the National Science Teacher Association area conference on science education Thursday through Saturday, Oct. 22- 24, at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center.

Have you ever wondered why there has been such a big push in the past decade or two toward so-called green energy?

Helping support and inspire the growing number of students in the entrepreneurship minor program is the Ozmen Center for Entrepreneurship. Since opening its doors in the University of Nevada, Reno’s College of Business in September 2014, the Ozmen Center has built an interdisciplinary program spanning across campus and out into the community.

“We teach a different way of thinking,” Chris Howard, Ozmen Center for Entrepreneurship director, said. “I describe it as diagonal thinking. We take the knowledge students learn in class and apply it to get different and desired results.”

The Career & Technical Education division at WNC offers a Bachelor of Technology degree, Associate of Applied Science degrees, certificates of achievement, and preparation for industry certification and licensing.

All 2,300 Carson High School students will each receive a laptop during the week of Oct. 5-9 to be used at school and at home to enhance their learning opportunities. Beginning Monday at 7:45 a.m. and going throughout the day, all students will go to the library to receive their laptop. This process will be repeated again Tuesday through Thursday.
