Hunters wanting a crash course on how to safely handle game after its been caught can attend a number of workshops this summer offered through the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension and the University of Nevada, Reno College of Agriculture, Biotechnology and Natural Resources.

In a collaboration with the Nevada Department of Wildlife, the workshops aim to provide a hands-on experience for Nevada hunters on field dressing techniques, safe handling and transportation of meat, and conservation.

The Brewery Arts Center in Carson City continues its July lineup of entertainment venues as part of its celebration of summer and Nevada's 150th year statehood with a visit from Mark Twain this Saturday.

What would Nevada's Sesquicentennial be without the musings of the legendary Mark Twain? Hear the Ghost of Mark Twain through the modern-day transporter McAvoy Layne on Saturday, July 19, 7:30 p.m. with special guests Shiloh.

Lots of shady trees, a nice gentle breeze and plenty of ice cold beer were enough to keep the heat down a notch Saturday at the High Sierra Regional Chili Cook-Off and Craft Fair in Carson City.

The two-day event at Glen Eagles Restaurant, which continues through Sunday, has brought dozens of the best chili cookers from around the region hoping for a chance to win prize money, bragging rights and a trip to Las Vegas for the World Chili Cook-off Championship. The public is invited to Sunday's event and sampling costs next to nothing, organizers said.

Tahoe Resource Conservation District watercraft inspectors stopped a boat with quagga mussels and an unidentified snail species hiding in the anchor locker, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency announced Thursday.

The boat, coming from Lake Mead, a known quagga-infested water body, was inspected Wednesday at the Spooner Summit inspection station on Highway 50 in Nevada.

Now that we are at that time of the year that I hate (daytime temperatures near, at or over 100 degrees), my thoughts drift off to hiking and fishing for trout at higher altitudes where it is cooler than here in Carson City.
When our local summer temperatures are over 80 degrees, it is miserably hot – hot – hot for this poor, sweltering soul.

New York Times author Novella Carpenter will be at the 3rd and Curry Street downtown Carson City Farmer’s Market on July 19 at 11 a.m. to chat about her bestselling memoir, Farm City: The Education of an Urban Farmer.

Carpenter and northern Nevada agriculture expert Mark O’Farrell, of Hungry Mother Organics, are set to engage in a kitchen-table visit. Under a large tent, with seats for 100, the conversation will be led by northern Nevada’s KTVN news anchor Erin Breen. The special event is aimed at raising awareness about the vital role farmers play in our lives.

The Nevada State Engineer will hold a series of public meetings during the months of July and August. These “listening sessions” will provide information to the public on water related issues in Nevada and to listen to any and all comments, suggestions and questions from the public about water related issues.

The Carson City meeting will be Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2014 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Bryan Building (NDWR Office), Tahoe Hearing Room, 2nd Floor, 901 S. Stewart Street.

CARSON CITY — A low-key but high-stakes campaign is underway to win the hearts and minds of Nevada voters ahead of the general election and a crucial vote on a margins tax to fund public education.

Home sales throughout Lake Tahoe continued to slow throughout the first half of the year, while home prices remained steady, according to a quarterly report released by Lake Tahoe-based real estate company Chase International. Despite an 18 percent decline in overall sales volume, the figures are still significantly higher than those of 2012.

This year’s Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival comes to the Sand Harbor State Park shore July 11-August 24, with William Shakespeare’s As You Like It as the featured production of the summer.

More than 120 volunteers for the League to Save Lake Tahoe removed 2,260 pounds of trash from six of Tahoe’s most popular beaches on July 5, the day after tens of thousands of people flocked to the lake to enjoy the July 4th festivities.

The debris represented almost 10 cubic yards, or a dump truck full, of trash. It included over 3,000 cigarette butts, 1,200 cans, 800 glass and plastic bottles, and 320 plastic bags. Other cleanup projects also included a 17th annual one by K&K Services.

Hijinks on the Comstock with a twist comes to Carson City this summer with "Where is the Gold?" a Wild West melodrama and murder mystery dinner set aboard a vintage Virginia and Truckee Railroad steam engine train, July 18 and August 15.

"Where is the Gold?" produced by the Brewery Arts Center will entertain with plenty of Comstock legend and lore intertwined with spellbinding whodunit mystery. The audience will be invited to help the cast of characters solve the mystery of who stole the gold, and who is responsible for the death of Mr. Big.

There's still time to enter the "beat the heat" photo contest sponsored through the Carson City Visitors Bureau.

The contest is designed around summer visitors to Nevada's capital city and beating the heat. Participants have a chance to win lodging, dining and entertainment passes, rodeo tickets and more.

UPDATE: Carson City Supervisors agreed Thursday to opt in on Nevada's medical marijuana law regarding establishments of dispensaries and facilities. The board voted 4 to 1 in favor of zoning changes that allow for medical marijuana establishments in zoned areas. Go here for the full story.

The second reading of a proposed zoning ordinance allowing for marijuana dispensaries and facilities for cultivation, production and testing will go before the Carson City Board of Supervisors on Thursday during an evening session.

A repave along the bottom section of Mt. Rose Highway in Washoe County should be done by Thursday, according to the Nevada Department of Transportation.

Paving work from the base of the highway at South Virginia Street to Timberline Drive in the Montreux area should be finished in time for the July 4 holiday weekend with some with minor roadside enhancement work over the next few weeks, said NDOT spokeswoman Meg Ragonese.

Today, July 1 marked the beginning of Bear Logic Month in Nevada and the bears quickly illustrated the reason why the special month to promote bear awareness in Nevada is needed.

Many celebrations are scheduled statewide in the month of July. These Nevada 150 events help celebrate all things Nevada and bring awareness to the state’s 150th Anniversary of Statehood. The following events are held July 1 through July 12.

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval has declared July BEAR Logic Month. BEAR stands for Bear Education, Aversion and Research, and BEAR Logic Month is an opportunity to help educate the public about living in bear country.

The Carson City Symphony's "Strings in the Summer" orchestra and beginning fiddle class, directed by Sue Jesch, will present its Summer String Concert of traditional American fiddle tunes on Thursday, July 31, at 10 a.m. at Sierra Place Senior Living, 1111 West College Parkway, Carson City. The concert is free and is open to the public.

Lake Tahoe’s one and only curling club is extending its welcome mat this July. Lake Tahoe Epic Curling is hosting two learn-to-curl sessions for those interested in giving this fast-growing Olympic sport a try.

It started out as one of those lazy days in Carson City, where it’s not too hot, but it’s not too cold!

It’s just right!

But, when the mercury begins to creep into the triple digits, I am glad I take advantage of the cooler temperatures early in the summer season, because I hate to cook on my patio when it is 100 degrees in the shade!

This is the reason I go straight to my favorite BBQ restaurant for my semi-annual feasting of pork ribs, with corn bread, cole slaw and beans, coupled with my favorite adult libation.

It is going to get hot this coming week in Carson City and Northern Nevada. With the weather we can expect to see more bicycle, moped, and motorcycle riders out and about on roads and highways trying to keep cool in the summer heat.

In addition we will also see an increase in pedestrians as school is out and many children are on foot as they travel to locations within the city.

In time for summer and the July 4 holiday weekend, Carson City's own Sausage Factory now has its products in 14 Raley's supermarkets throughout Northern Nevada.

Shoppers can find 18 varieties of the gourmet sausage, made exclusively in Carson City, in the meat department of any of the grocery stores, said Sausage Factory President Joe Tonino.

"We're proud to be in such a high quality store here in Northern Nevada. Our product line matches well in their meat case," said Tonino.
