Carson City and Lake Tahoe area road report through May 18

Here is the Carson City area road report through May 18, 2014: Ponderosa Drive will be permanently closed to public traffic south of E. Roland Street on Tuesday, May 13. Temporary access will be allowed for emergency vehicles and buses only.

There will be lane closures with flagger-controlled traffic on weekdays on Northgate Lane between the freeway overpass and Jumbo Court.

A southbound lane of Saliman Road will be closed just north of E. fifth street from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Wednesday.

Safety campaign urges Nevada motorcyclists to slow down, lay off the booze when riding

Warm weather brings out motorcycle riders by the tens of thousands to the open Nevada roads. Public safety officials warn that with spring and summer riding comes responsibility.

Fifty-three motorcyclists died on Nevada roadways in 2013, surpassing the previous year’s number of fatalities by 39 percent, according to the Nevada Department of Public Safety, Office of Traffic Safety.

Across the nation, May is Motorcycle Safety Month, focused on the motorcycle as an important form of transportation, and reminding its riders and all motorists of important safety guidelines.

Kingsbury Grade closed for construction, Lake Tahoe travelers rerouted to Highway 50 over Spooner

Beginning today, May 1, travelers and commuters looking to get to South Shore Lake Tahoe will need to take Highway 50 over Spooner Summit instead of State Route 207 over Kingsbury Grade.

The road is closed now through May 23 as part of a $15 million road paving and reconstruction project directed by the Nevada Department of Transportation.

March unemployment down in Carson City, Lyon County

March unemployment was down slightly in Carson City and Lyon County, but inched upward in Douglas, according to figures released Monday from the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.

Unemployment dropped to 9.8 in Carson City, down from 9.9 percent in February and 10.3 percent in January. In Lyon County the March unemployment rate was 12.6 percent, down from February's 12.7 percent and January's 13.1 percent.

22nd Annual Letter Carriers Food Drive is Saturday, May 10

Saturday, May 10 is the 22nd Annual Letter Carriers Food Drive. This is the largest one day food drive in the nation and helps local food banks to restock their supplies in preparation for the summer.

Carson City Sheriff's Office to step up trail patrol in Prison Hill recreation area

After years of relative non-enforcement and mounting concerns of vandalism, trash dumping and illegal off road riding on public land designated as open space and not for motorized use, the Carson City Sheriff's Office will step up patrol of the Prison Hill Recreation Area south to Fifth Street.

Carson City area road report for week of April 28 to May 4

Here is the Carson City area road report provided by the public works department for the week of April 28 through May 4, 2014. Beginning Monday, a project to provide utility and street improvements will begin on Vista Grande Boulevard.

The street will be closed between Topsy Lane and Old Clear Creek Road to vehicles until project completion estimated to be in June. Motorist will need to use other routes.

License plate sales fund Lake Tahoe environmental preservation projects

Nine projects have been awarded grants through the 2014 Lake Tahoe License Plate program, which generated around $350,000 last year from the sale of special plates through the DMV. Grant recipients were announced Tuesday by the Nevada Division of State Lands.

Grants are made available annually for projects that preserve and restore the natural environment of the Lake Tahoe Basin.

National Train Day at the Nevada Railroad Museum set for May 10

To commemorate National Train Day the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City will operate and offer rides on May 10 aboard Virginia & Truckee Railway's McKeen motor car No. 22.

The car entered service for the V&T on May 9, 1910, and was retired in 1945. No. 22 is the only restored and operable McKeen motor car in the world. In 2012, the Secretary of the Interior granted the No. 22 National Historic Landmark status, which recognizes the McKeen motor car's significance to United States history.

NDOT builds memorial honoring road workers who died at Nevada road project sites

A memorial ribbon is being built this week at the Nevada Department of Transportation headquarters in Carson City that will memorialize the 25 NDOT employees who have died since the agency began while doing road construction work.

The ribbon is part of a campaign recognizing National Work Zone Awareness Week going on now through Friday. Once finished, the memorial at NDOT headquarters, 1263 South Stewart Street, will be draped with potted flowers.
