Coming Jan. 14 to Western Nevada College (WNC) is a series of proven methods which reduce college costs and get graduates a university degree in as few as two years.

A series of ten weekly classes is aimed toward college-bound high school juniors and seniors and their parents, as well as adults looking for career advancement.

How adventurous are you? Ascent Runs continues their Be Bold, Run in the Cold Winter Trail Series with a five or ten kilometer run starting at Centennial Park. If you’d like a less strenuous outdoor activity, then the Downtown Business Association’s monthly Wine Walk is a perfect choice. The wine walk is a rain, snow, or shine event, so bring an umbrella. Get ready for a cold one. We get a short reprieve from the wet stuff, but the thermometer isn’t expected to inch above freezing today. Be safe on the roads out there, it could be icy. Tonight’s a great night for some local talent. Check out local songwriters at Comma Coffee and warm up with some hot cocoa, coffee or tea. A to Zen holds a weekly Open Mic, but mixes it up a little the first Friday of the month: dress to the nines and bring something for a potluck. The BAC Blowhards will have you in stitches at Improv Night at the Brewery Arts Center.

Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada will celebrate the beginning of the 2017 Cookie Season with the Carson City Cookie Kickoff event. The celebration is Friday, Jan. 6 at the Carson City Mall from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Decided where to go to college yet? Filled out all the applications? Been accepted? Now what? As if that was not difficult enough, now comes the time to think about moving, what to take, what not to take, whether or not it is better to live in the dorms or get an apartment.

Are you ready for this? New Year’s weekend is upon us and brings with it hope and optimism for the New Year. Carson City:

Raynna Jackson began helping with Toys for Tots at the Ron Wood center before Thanksgiving in order to fulfill her CHS Senior Project graduation requirement; she decided to help give underprivileged children a Merry Christmas.

She started by putting boxes at CHS and her mother’s place of employment, Natel Company. Toys for Tots serves more than 2,000 Carson City area kids every Christmas, and Raynna took this personally; she wanted to help bring in even more gifts. Raynna ultimately facilitated the gathering of 2 large boxes of toys.

Nevada’s Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation’s Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation in conjunction with Truckee Meadows Community College Workforce Development and Community Education Department is hosting a unique program designed to assist people with disabilities improve their soft skills to qualify for employment.

Don’t think that Sundays are just for rest, there is plenty to coax you out of your pajamas today. Take a trip with Santa at the Nevada Railroad Museum. Search for treasures and do your Christmas shopping at Fuji Park today, one of the multiple craft shows in town. Standing in front of artist Mauricio Sandoval’s newest mural on West Telegraph Street gives one the feeling they are admiring the high desert landscape of Northern Nevada rather than a brick wall.

After of the usual Halloween hubbub this Monday, you can spend a spellbinding evening with guitarist/composer Arthur Dente and flutist Valentine Dente. Weaving a rich blend of classical, jazz, and flamenco guitar and flute, the duo of Arthur and Valentine Dente serve up an extraordinary performance of world music influenced by Latin-America, India, France, and the Celtic nations.

They create a passionate musical journey, combining virtuosity and intimacy that conjures the magic of sunny days in Spain, cool evenings in France, and the whirling, festival colors of Latin America and India.

I’m usually a lover of sunny days, but right now I say bring on the rain. The moisture is a welcome help to our heroic firefighters in Lake Tahoe and Washoe Valley. Because of the wet weather and the recent fires, some activities have been postponed: most notably the Advocates to End Domestic Violence’s Annual Light After Dark Run. There are still plenty of things to occupy your time, but the weather may force more cancellations.

Sierra Inline Hockey League is holding a Skating Clinic and Open Skate this Sunday, 10/16/16 from 1PM to 4PM at the Marv Teixeira Pavilion (in Mills Park). This event is for all ages and skill levels. There is no cost for participants and we will have loaner gear available for those who don't already have equipment. Coaches and board members will be on-site to answer questions about our upcoming 2016-2017 season!

But athletic dominance alone isn't what makes a champion great. Character is what elevates some to the greatness. Humility, integrity, sportsmanship and respect for others are what set some champions apart.

That’s why we think more highly of Greg Maddux than Roger Clemens. Maddux was all class all the time, while Clemens was full of ego, aggression and controversy.

Heading “back to school” will mean something very different to the Carson City area high school students who participate in the New Entrepreneurship Network (NewE) this school year.

Fifteen incarcerated inmates, some being U.S. military veterans held at the Warm Springs Corrections Center in Carson City will be taking Western Nevada College classes with scholarships generated through an inmate barbecue fundraiser held earlier this year.

Volunteers of all ages and skill levels are invited to this fun, hands-on restoration day at the Angora Burn Area in South Lake Tahoe. By pitching in, you can make a direct impact in restoring the watershed habitats that surround Lake Tahoe.

The event is Sept. 10 beginning at 8:30 a.m. Parking will be limited. Participants are encouraged to carpool or, better still, to walk to ride a bike. Participants arriving on foot or by bicycle will receive a surprise reward.

Western Nevada College students received a job placement boost in its Applied Industrial Technology lab this week — a Panasonic representative spoke of his interest in their skills and futures.

My name is Colleen Bannister and I am a personal trainer here in Carson City. After working out many years myself I’ve learned that being open to learning new things and incorporating them into your workouts is one of the best ways to stay motivated.

Rising demand for craft beers over the past decade or two has resulted in a resurgence of the age-old hobby of home brewing, Just Brew It owner Trevor Rotoli said.

John Doiron, Carson High School’s Career and Technical Education’s new manufacturing instructor, stood in front of the Carson City Area Manufacturers Forum in early June to outline his plan for the manufacturing program and to ask for their support in sharing their knowledge to develop curriculum, being guest speakers in class and inviting students in to their facilities for field trips, internships and other work-based learning experiences.

Three days of thrill-seeking, mountain biking adventure and plenty of capital city hospitality and entertainment will kick off the inaugural Carson City Off-Road Epic Ride series beginning Friday and lasting through the weekend.

With the announcement earlier this month that Western Nevada College has partnered with Panasonic Energy of North America’s gigafactory, accelerated training classes will begin June 20 in Carson City and continue through the summer.
