New artist mural adds to colorful downtown Carson City
Standing in front of artist Mauricio Sandoval’s newest mural on West Telegraph Street gives one the feeling they are admiring the high desert landscape of Northern Nevada rather than a brick wall.
Sandoval’s mural dresses the side of the building at 107 W. Telegraph Street, which houses the Champagne Beauty Bar.
“Mauricio brings a lot of talent, skill and vision and cultural diversity that really makes a town like our prosper,” said Carson City Arts and Culture Coordinator Mark Salinas. “This really sets a precedent for future development.”
Bursting with the warm colors of a sunset mingling with the rich earth tones of desert landscape, the mural captures life in rural Nevada.
This was all done purposely, Sandoval said in an earlier interview.
“The main thing about my art is to make people feel happy — or what I call good medicine,” said Sandoval, a Carson City resident who grew up in the Stewart Indian Colony. “It’s more of a home feeling.”
Carson City Supervisor Karen Abowd helped cut the ribbon on Sandoval’s mural Friday morning at its public unveiling.
The mural project was commissioned by the property’s owner, John Rutledge, who became impressed by Sandoval’s art work.
He decided he wanted something from Sandoval showcased on his property.
"The downtown needs more life and vibrancy,” Rutledge said. “It needs a better energy. In keeping with the downtown corridor remodel, we are creating a more vibrant atmosphere down here.”
Salinas, hired in August by the Carson City Visitors Bureau (CCVB), said collaborations between businesses and artists downtown is something he’d like to see more of.
“This mural shows the dynamic potential of how local artists, businesses and landlords could work together with the city to build a vibrant cultural landscape,” he said.
For Sandoval, completion of the project is the realization of a lifelong goal.
“I always wanted to do a large scale mural,” he said. “So when I got the opportunity I was really excited and happy.”
