For the past five years the Carson City Classic Cinema Club has been showing the great 'Golden Age of Hollywood' films to local moviegoers as a way to promote art education in the community. The club's founder notes its acceptance thus far has been slow going but, so far, successful.

The first week of November marches along with sunshine to continue into the foreseeable future. Events ahead for this Thursday include a regular meeting of the Carson City Board of Supervisors, a Mammovan stop at Nevada Health Centers, a Muscle Powered afternoon hike, and an evening with local artist Rebecca Fox at Artsy Fartsy Gallery. Events around the capital city include a monthly lunch series at the Nevada State Library featuring author, professor and poet Lindsay Wilson, a Sierra Nevada Forum discussion on Nevada's Native Tribes, past, present and future; heart and vascular screenings through Carson Tahoe Health and Wellness, a morning walk, evening hike and a bike ride with Muscle Powered, archery at Centennial Park, family craft and movie night at Carson City Library and more.

Nevada Health Centers’ Mammovan will make stops in Reno and Carson City this week. Mammography screenings are primarily for women age 40 and older; however, screenings will be provided to those younger than 40 that have a screening referral from a provider.

Carson High School will again open its doors a little wider and longer for the 3rd Annual Back-to-School Night like no other Sept. 9. Open House, Open Hearts is a community event focused on building bridges to local services for teens and their families, increasing parent and guardian engagement at CHS, and celebrating the community, creativity, and diverse talents of Carson City.

Watching them gather, wearing pajamas, wrapped in blankets, and celebrating the beginning of their senior year, the Class of 2019-2020 gathered together at 6:00 a.m. Aug. 30 on the bleachers of the Carson High School football field to watch the sun rise; it is the beginning of their last year at CHS, and, for some of them, their last year as students who were raised within the Carson City School District, students who went from kindergarten at Mark Twain Elementary to Carson Middle School and have spent the last three years at CHS.

Heading into Thursday, August 29, 2019 and we're ready and due for the upcoming three-day holiday weekend ahead. Looking around the Carson City area for Thursday there's art showings, a Muscle Powered hike, a Partnership Carson City training and lunch and then a vigil to recognize and prevent opioid overdose and more.

Heading into Tuesday, August 27, 2019 we're looking at continued hot weather around the capital city, with daytime highs in the mid to upper 90s. Ahead is a job fair at the Carson Nugget, a Fat Tuesday business networking gathering, a morning walk, evening hike and a bike ride with Muscle Powered, free skin cancer testing offered by Carson Tahoe Health and Wellness Institute, a Relay for Life fundraiser at Firehouse Subs and more.

Carson Dermatology on behalf of Carson Tahoe Health & Wellness Institute is offering free skin cancer screenings. Skin cancer is the most prevalent of all cancers. It is estimated that more than one million Americans develop skin cancer every year. Sun avoidance is the best defense against skin cancer.

Carson High School Principal Gavin Ward stood at the north entrance high-fiving students as they entered high school, some of them for the first time. In fact, counselors, teachers, and other administrators stood at each of the school entrances welcoming students to the best high school in the state, hyperbole aside.

More than 300 Special Olympics athletes from across the state will converge this weekend in Reno for the annual Special Olympics Nevada (SONV) Summer Games. The torch was carried through Carson City Friday on its way to the games.

CARSON CITY — According to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Early detection is key in the fight against breast cancer, so access to screenings is critically important.

The Senior Celebration held Thursday at the Casino Fandango Ballroom in Carson City went off without a hitch with festivities including raffles, a cake walk, live entertainment, medical screenings and more.

Carson City Soroptimist will present grant awards to two women, and honor the achievements of local high school seniors, on Wednesday, May 22, noon to 1 p.m. at Glen Eagles. The meeting is open to the public, with prior reservations required.

It’s long been established that addiction is a disease, one that can be overcome with treatment. Carson City’s courts, through options such as alternative sentencing, drug court, and the most recent addition of misdemeanor treatment court, has taken steps to combat addiction.

However, there is a hole in their treatment process, and a large one at that: safe, sober housing.

Not only is Friday the first day of March in this 2019 calendar year but it is also the end of the work week. And for this we say welcome to a month that brings us the Downtown Carson City Wine Walk, which is this Saturday, NCAA basketball playoffs, St. Patrick's Day celebrations and the first day of spring.
