On September 13, Carson High School will open its doors a little wider and longer for a back to school night like no other. Open House, Open Hearts is a community event focused on building bridges to local services for teens and their families, increasing parent and guardian engagement at CHS, and celebrating the community, creativity and diverse talents of Carson City.

More than 25 local community service providers will line the hallways of Senator Square for a community fair beginning at 4:30 p.m. The fair will highlight Carson City activities, family friendly events and provide information and screenings for a variety of local health services.

Deaths from opiate drugs have reached epidemic levels, according to data released by the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention, with lethal overdoses quadrupling nationwide since 1999.

Make this weekend something special. School starts up on Monday and it will be Halloween before we blink an eye. The Carl Howell Memorial Music Festival at Battle Born Harley boasts a full day of live music, vendors, activities and family fun. Soroptimist International of Carson City welcomes members of the community to its lunch meeting Wednesday, March 22. The club meets from noon until 1 pm in the north room of Glen Eagles Restaurant.

Special Olympics Northern California and Nevada will host the annual South Lake Tahoe Polar Plunge fundraiser on Saturday, March 18, in the icy waters of Lake Tahoe at Zephyr Cove Resort. The Plunge will be featured during a full weekend of events and activities to benefit Special Olympics.

This month's film will be held in the ballroom, upstairs from the Black Box Theatre at the Brewery Arts Center, 449 West King Street in Carson City.

May the frost be with you! Special Olympics Nevada and Northern California will host the annual South Lake Tahoe Polar Plunge fundraiser beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 18, in the icy waters of Lake Tahoe at Zephyr Cove Resort. The 2017 Polar Plunge will feature a “space odyssey” theme and raise funds and awareness for Special Olympics and its athletes.

The Nevada Health Centers Mammovan is going to be making stops in the coming days to Gardnerville, Carson City, Reno, Smith Valley and Hawthorne.

For the first movie of 2017, the Carson City Classic Cinema Club presents "Beat the Devil" on Jan. 3. Beat the Devil is a 1953 British film directed by John Huston, starring Humphrey Bogart, Jennifer Jones and Gina Lollobrigida, and featuring Robert Morley, Peter Lorre and Bernard Lee.

Saturday, Oct. 22:

The 2016 Carson City Creepy Short Horror Film Competition is now registering teams. Make a scary short film in just one week. On Oct. 19 at 12 noon, all registered teams will receive their prompts — a prop, a sound effect and a line of dialogue. Exactly one week later, they must turn in their finished short horror film ranging between 5 and 8 minutes in length.

Nevada Health Centers’ Mammovan will make stops this week in Carson City, Dayton and Lake Tahoe areas in its recently renovated and remodeled mobile care center.
