Thanks to kind community donations, Santa will be bringing a bit of Christmas Joy Saturday to homebound and low-income seniors often left out during this seasonal celebration.

“I cannot believe the number of donations we received this year – so much more than we could anticipate," said Gwen Pradere, found of Friends to All, Inc.

The owner of Slot World in Carson City, Mike Pegram, has made a $10,000 contribution to Holiday with a Hero after serving more than 700 plates of food Saturday to patrons of Betsy's Big Kitchen restaurant inside the casino.

Someone has taken the holiday's spirit one more step and converted the roadside roundabout decorations and a pine tree to a Christmas tree near Arrowhead and I-580 in Carson City. In addition, one of the statues was transformed into Santa and his helper. Who knows, maybe Santa is the one to decorate this little corner of Carson City?

Time to make some joyful noise in the capital city. The annual community holiday show at the Brewery Arts Center features John and Cherie Shipley, with the special addition of the Joyful Noise Children’s Chorus. These chilly December evenings are perfect for checking out the lights and decorations around the area. Candy Cane Lane, the drive-thru display at Carson Valley Inn in Minden, runs every night. Nevada Christmas, a private home in the Stephanie Way neighborhood, goes all out with a light show that’s choreographed to music.

The Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City will conclude its 33rd year of Santa Train this Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 16-17.

Betsy’s Big Kitchen in the Slot World Casino has been taken over by Holiday With a Hero. All day Saturday Slot World is donating 100% of the proceeds from the cafe to the Holiday with a Hero program which provides a proper Christmas to nearly 300 local underprivileged students. The event runs until 8 p.m.

The annual Silver Saddle Ranch Holiday Open House is the perfect time to explore this hidden gem of open space in east Carson City. The Silver Saddle Ranch (SSR) is a 703-acre working ranch located between the Pine Nut Mountains to the east and Prison Hill to the west. The Ranch and surrounding landscape is dominated by agricultural fields, sagebrush, and wetland and riparian habitats.

Six Nevada Department of Corrections and Division of Forestry fire crews including inmates from Stewart Camp in Carson City have been deployed to fight fires in southern California, state prison officials said Thursday.

Engines from East Fork, Central Lyon County and Tahoe Douglas are among 12 regional agencies that make up three strike teams that are sending personnel to the fire.

The Carson City community held its third annual Holiday Crawl Benefit 2017 on Saturday to raise money for the Holiday with a Hero campaign that gives local homeless children a chance to shop for themselves and family for Christmas. The downtown Carson City event was attended by more than 400 people, up about 100 from last year, organizers say.

Even Santa Claus enjoys his time aboard Carson City's famed trains. With appearances at the Brewery Arts Center, Santa can be found throughout the area, including the Nevada Railroad Museum. Elsewhere, let the arrows fly during the Clearcreek Bowmen’s Holiday with a Hero fundraising 3-D shoot. Enjoy a Small Town Christmas in Dayton this evening. The festivities take place in ‘Our Park,’ at the western edge of town. An ugly sweater contest, hot chocolate, caroling, tree lighting and home-town fun are on the menu. Senior Projects, a Carson High School graduation requirement, are in full swing, and every year a host of new topics are set into motion by students who take it very seriously, students who take it upon themselves to make a difference in the lives of others. One such senior, Sarah Sever, is motivated to create awareness about a wide-ranging and ever growing atrocity affecting young women in America.
