Sunshine ahead for Monday, Nov. 18 around the capital city before valley showers and light Sierra snow settles into the region late Tuesday. Activities and events the first day of the work week include a kindergarten open house at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic School, a free yoga class offered through Partnership Carson City, a discussion with the capital city's new library director, art events and more.

Featured speaker at Monday's Carson City Democratic luncheon will be Tod Colegrove, who recently took the reins as Carson City Library Director, replacing Sena Loyd who resigned in February to take a job in the private sector. He holds a doctorate and masters degree in physics, and a masters of library and information science with concentration in competitive intelligence and knowledge management.

Going into Monday, Nov. 11, 2019 it is Veterans Day. Federal, state and local government offices and schools are closed to observe the holiday. Thank you U.S. Veterans for your service to our great country. There are a number of organized happenings in the region, including parades in Virginia City and Reno, as well as events in South Lake Tahoe and Sparks. Plus a number of Carson City and Carson Valley restaurants are offering no cost meals as a gesture of gratitude to veterans and active duty military members. Also Monday is a discussion on homeless issues with local advocate and champion for those who are often without a voice, Dee Dee Foremaster.

Dee Dee Foremaster, executive director of the Rural Center for Independent Living and Do Drop In day refuge for the homeless and mentally ill — including many veterans — will be the featured speaker at Monday's Carson City Democratic luncheon. The topic of her presentation will be "Reality Check: Is tough love the solution to homelessness?"

A warmup is in the forecast this week as we head into Monday, Nov. 4, 2019. Expect sunny skies with daytime highs in the upper 60s. But you'll want to bundle up after the sun sets as night time temperatures will be in the low 30s. Activities Monday include a lunch discussion with Nevada Appeal columnist Guy Farmer, the first of free Monday yoga classes offered through Partnership Carson City, art showings, West Coast swing dancing and more.

The featured speaker at Monday's Democratic luncheon will be veteran journalist and Nevada Appeal political columnist Guy Farmer. He will relate from first hand experience the story of Frank Sinastra's expulsion from and ultimate return to Nevada's gaming industry.

With the wildly festive Nevada Day weekend now behind us, a busy week is ahead as we begin to close out October and prepare to celebrate Halloween in the capital city. Activities Monday include a lunch discussion with the director of the Toiyabe Chapter of the Sierra Club, art showings, West Coast swing dancing and more.

Featured speaker at Monday's Democratic luncheon will be Brian Beffort, Director of the Sierra Club's Toiyabe Chapter. In that capacity, he works with Sierra Club members in Nevada, the Lake Tahoe basin and California's Range of Light to protect clean water and air, healthy communities, resilient economies and our beautiful public lands.

And we're off as we count down the days until Saturday's Nevada Day celebration, the biggest statewide party of its kind or any kind for that matter. Going into the first day of the work week, Monday, Oct. 21, we're looking at sunshine and a high around 70. Events around the capital city include a lunch discussion on the Secret Witness program, art showings, West Coast swing dancing and more.

Featured speaker at Monday's Democratic luncheon will be Mike Hix, board member of Secret Witness, an organization founded in 1979 to afford Northern Nevada community members an opportunity to share information on unsolved crimes while remaining anonymous.

Going into Monday, Oct. 14, 2019, we're looking at continued sunny skies and a high near 70. The first day of the work week is deadline day to get nominations in for the Carson City Carson City 2019 Mayor's Arts Awards. Events around the capital city include a luncheon with Lt. Governor Kate Marshall, the second of a six-week standup comedy class, art showings, West Coast swing dancing and more.

Featured speaker at Monday's Democratic luncheon will be Kate Marshall, who on Jan. 7, 2019 became the 35th Lieutenant Governor of the State of Nevada. From 2007 to 2015, she served as Nevada's 21st State Treasurer.

Featured speaker at Monday's Democratic luncheon will be Laura Leigh, President of Wild Horse Education, a 501(c)(3) registered public charity. She has been involved in anti-slaughter issues for more than two decades, carrying on the work pioneered by Velma Johnston (1912-1977), who came to be known as "Wild Horse Annie" for her fight to gain federal protection of wild horses and burros.

Featured speaker at Monday's Democratic luncheon will be Nevada State Treasurer Zach Conine. A native of New York, in 2003 Conine earned his bachelor's degree from Cornell University's School of Hotel Administration, and in 2013 he completed his JD from UNLV's William S. Boyd School of Law.

Heading into the first day fall, Monday, Sept. 23, 2019 we are looking at cool temperatures as a cold front passes through before a warming trend starts up Tuesday. Events include an estate planning seminar at the Carson City Senior Center, a guest presentation by the executive editor of the Reno Gazette-Journal at Round Table Pizza in Carson City, art showings, West Coast swing dancing, and more. Featured speaker at Monday's Democratic luncheon will be Brian Duggan, Executive Editor of the Reno Gazette-Journal, the only daily newspaper still published in Northern Nevada. He will describe the challenges of putting out a new edition every 24 hours in the brave new world of online competition, private equity acquisitions and print journalism consolidation, even while plans unfold to build a new police headquarters right where the RGJ's newsroom now stands.

The featured speaker at Monday's Democratic luncheon will be Donna Walden, President of GreenUP!, a nonprofit that has established a green dining district along Carson Street. The district's purpose is to help restaurants reduce all waste streams, with a strong focus on food waste. Accompanying her will be Angela Bullentini Wolf of Gather, who will describe that restaurant's experience implementing green practices.

Heading into the final week of August and the Labor Day weekend around the corner, Monday, August 26 looks to be another especially hot day across the capital city and western Nevada with highs in the mid-90s. Activities around the capital city include a talk about earthquake preparedness with Carson City's fire chief, art showings, a clay club ceramics class at Western Nevada College, West Coast swing dancing at Carson Lanes and more. Carson City Fire Chief Sean Slamon will be the featured speaker at Monday’s Democratic luncheon. His presentation will focus on raising citizen awareness that western Nevada is at a significant earthquake risk, and of measures that can be taken to prepare for the worst in the event of a seismic event.

Kathryn McCool, executive director of Reciprocity Inc., will be the featured speaker at Monday’s Carson City Democratic luncheon. As Senior Program Officer at the State Department of Corrections, she has managed the re-entry program at the Southern Desert Correctional Center in Indian Springs since April of 2013. She founded Reciprocity, Inc. in 2014.

Heading into the first day of the work week, if you're an early, early riser or are settling in for the night, you'll want to step outside at around 3 a.m. for the peak of the Perseid shower, which will be in the eastern sky. UPDATE: There's a star party late Monday night into Tuesday morning hosted by Carson City Parks and Recreation and Open Space. For summer’s most visible meteor showers, join the Carson City Parks, Rec and Open Space Department at Western Nevada College’s Jack C. Davis Observatory for some late night, educational fun. No pre-registration necessary. Please wear close-toed shoes and bring water for night hiking from the Observatory. Head lamps and flashlights are allowed. Heading into Monday, July 29, 2019 and we're wondering how the month went by so quickly. Again we're looking at a fairly typical end of July day weather wise, with sunny skies and a high around 94. Fred Lokken, political science professor at Truckee Meadows Community College, will be the featured speaker at Monday's Democratic luncheon. Always an insightful and provocative observer of the political scene, Prof. Lokken will share his views on the outcome of the 80th legislative session as well as the rapidly developing race for the Democratic presidential nomination.

Heading into Monday, July 15, 2019 the Carson City region is looking at sunny skies, breezy conditions and a slight cooling trend over the next couple days, according to the National Weather Service. In the meantime, it looks to be another fine day in the capital city. Ahead there's a youth mountain bike camp, a presentation by an AARP lobbyist, art showings and more.

Featured speaker at Monday's Carson City Democratic luncheon will be Mary Liveratti, who served as AARP's Nevada state president for six years before retiring in 2018. She has served as a volunteer advocate on behalf of legislation impacting seniors. At the luncheon, she will review the AARP-advocated bills that successfully became law during the 80th session, as well as others that didn't cross the finish line, including those likely to reemerge during the 81st session in 2021.
