Here's what's happening Monday:
— Students return to class in the Carson City School District. School starts Monday. To help you prepare, the Carson City School District recently posted its Fall 2019 newsletter. Go here for the newsletter and what's happening across the district.
— Capital City Arts Initiative Presents: New Crop 2019. 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Capital City Arts Initiative (CCAI) presents its exhibition, New Crop 2019, by artists Mark Combs and Frances Melhop. Carson City Courthouse Gallery, 885 E Musser St., Carson City.
— Capital City Arts Initiative Presents: Graphically Defined. 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Capital City Arts Initiative (CCAI) is delighted to present Graphically Defined, a group exhibition of work by seventeen Western Nevada College students. This exhibit includes a wide variety of art including ceramics, drawing, graphic design, painting and photography that shows the diversity of the students’ creativity. The Business Resource Innovation Center (BRIC) is open Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. 108 E Proctor St., Carson City.
— WNC Continuing Education class: Strength Based Personal Development: An Intro to CliftonStrengths. 9 to 11 a.m. at WNC campus, Carson City. Strengths-Based Personal Development will provide participants with an introduction to the CliftonStrengths approach to leadership, with a focus on helping students tap into their unique talents and maximize their potential. — Open Studio Basic Painting at Brewery Arts Center. 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Students will work on their own paintings from subject matter they have chosen. The instructor, Mark Tompkins, will work one-on-one with each student to help them complete their project from start to finish. Each student must supply their own materials. Students may choose to paint in either water colors, oils, or acrylic paints. This is an open enrollment drop-in class, no need to sign-up. Tuition: $25 per session or $40 for the day. Classes: 9 to noon and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. located in the Painting Studio, 449 West King Street.
— Carson City Democratic luncheon to feature prisoner reintegration advocate. 11:30 a.m. Kathryn McCool, executive director of Reciprocity Inc., will be the featured speaker at Monday’s Carson City Democratic luncheon. As Senior Program Officer at the State Department of Corrections, she has managed the re-entry program at the Southern Desert Correctional Center in Indian Springs since April of 2013. She founded Reciprocity, Inc. in 2014. The organization’s stated mission is “to help released offenders reintegrate into society by providing housing, life skills, education, and job training, and by repairing the values and skills needed to become a responsible, productive member of society.” Reciprocity, Inc.’s vision is “for these reintegrated persons to facilitate reparations to the children, families and communities to whom they owe a debt of restitution and gratitude.”
This event is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on Monday, August 1, at the Carson City Round Table, 3325 Retail Drive just off College Parkway. Sponsored by the Democratic Men’s Committee, these luncheons help keep the lights on at Carson City’s Democratic HQ. An all-you-can-eat pizza and salad bar lunch buffet is available for $7.99. Water is free, extra charge for fountain drinks. Suggested donations of $5 or more gratefully accepted but are not required. All are welcome. — Brother Dan Palmer at A to Zen. Brother Dan Palmer plays a free show every Monday from 5 to 6 p.m. at A to Zen, 1801 N Carson St., Carson City.
— West Coast Swing Dance at Carson Lanes Family Fun Center. 5:30 p.m. Join the High Sierra Swing Club every Monday for a night filled with West Coast Swing dancing! Beginners class at 5:30 followed by an Intermediate class at 6:30, $8 each. Free social dance following lessons from 7:30 to 10:00 pm. No partner necessary. — Monday Night Throwing Class at Ogres-Holm Pottery. 5:30 p.m. Drop in sessions are $45 or $175 for a 6 week, open start class, including open studio anytime during the 6 weeks. — Jazz and Beyond: Dallas Smith Band. 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Dallas Smith Band will perform at Bob McFadden Plaza on Monday, Aug. 19, 2019. Dallas Smith plays alto saxophone, clarinet, and flute as a member of the Reno Jazz Orchestra. Joining Dallas on this concert are Kris Landrum, piano; Joe McKenna, bass; and Eric Middleton, drums. Seating is limited. Audience is encouraged to bring their own lawn chairs. Bob McFadden Plaza Third Street Stage is at 310 S. Carson St., Carson City.
