Green dining district organizer to speak at Carson City Democratic luncheon
The featured speaker at Monday's Democratic luncheon will be Donna Walden, President of GreenUP!, a nonprofit that has established a green dining district along Carson Street. The district's purpose is to help restaurants reduce all waste streams, with a strong focus on food waste. Accompanying her will be Angela Bullentini Wolf of Gather, who will describe that restaurant's experience implementing green practices.
Walden will also provide details about a statewide certified green business program currently being launched and what it could mean for businesses in Nevada. The political climate in Nevada is ripe for measures that address environmental concerns. The year 2019 saw single stream recycling become a reality in Carson City, and Governor Sisolak signed a bill into law that requiring the state to reach 50% renewable energy by 2030.
In addition, Walden will explore some unique business opportunities available to our state in terms of better environmental performance, as well as what individual Democrats can do to preserve the environment for future generations; also, how the green business program ties into environmental initiatives already underway in the state.
Donna Walden consults with businesses on how they can green their operations. In 2018, working together with Western Nevada College, she secured federal funding to launch a statewide green business program. In 2019, on behalf of GreenUP!, she secured a Nevada Division of Environmental Protection grant to launch the green dining district in Carson City.
While with UNR's Business Environmental Program, Walden served for five years as Regional Coordinator for the Western Sustainability & Pollution Prevention Network (WSPPN), part of a national network of Pollution Prevention Centers that operated in all ten of the EPA’s regions. WSPPN managed Region 9 (Arizona, California, Hawaii and Nevada).
In 2008 and 2009, Walden was the Executive Director of the Truckee-based Sierra Green Building Association, whose mission is to educate and promote environmental design, building and living practices in the Sierra Nevada.
In 2013 Donna received national recognition as the Pollution Prevention Volunteer of the Year by the National Pollution Prevention Roundtable as part of their annual Most Valuable Pollution Prevention (MVP2) awards, which are designed to recognize outstanding and innovative P2 projects and programs.
This event is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on Monday, September 16th, at the Carson City Round Table Pizza, 3325 Retail Drive just off College Parkway. Sponsored by the Democratic Men’s Committee, these luncheons help keep the lights on at Carson City’s Democratic HQ. An all-you-can-eat pizza and salad bar lunch buffet is available for $7.99. Water is free, extra charge for fountain drinks. Suggested donations of $5 or more gratefully accepted but are not required. All are welcome.
