Great Nevada Earthquake of 1915 spurs reminder for 2015 Great Nevada Shakeout

About 100 years ago Nevada was rocked by the largest earthquake in its history, the 1915 magnitude 7.3 Pleasant Valley earthquake south of Winnemucca. Only a few large earthquakes since then have rumbled the state, but nothing near the surface scar — with a vertical offset as high as 19 feet – that stretched 35 miles across Nevada’s Great Basin.

International buyers to attend Nevada Governor’s Global Tourism Summit in November

Creating solid business development opportunities within the lucrative international travel market is the focus of the Governor’s Global Tourism Summit, Nov. 16-17 at Hilton Lake Las Vegas.

The conference, presented by the Nevada Division of Tourism, includes the Nevada Marketplace, where Nevada tourism professionals meet one-on-one with more than 40 international travel agents, wholesale partners and airline representatives.

SACRAMENTO — The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has completed reviewing petitions to list nine species in California and Nevada under the Endangered Species Act and a petition to delist one species.

Carson City sheriff’s arrest log: Accomplice arrested in burglary, credit card fraud case

An investigation that led to the arrest of a Carson City man on burglary and credit card fraud charges expanded Tuesday with a 25-year-old accomplice booked on felony charges, a Carson City sheriff’s detective said.

Chelsea Cribbins of Carson City was booked on charges of burglary, credit card fraud, conspiracy to use a credit card and conspiracy to obtain money, possession of stolen property and obtaining money under false pretenses.

Carson City Soroptimist Stroke to Help Golf Tournament September 26

Soroptimist International of Carson City is still signing up golfers for its 14th annual Stroke to Help golf tournament, coming up on Saturday, Sept. 26.

The tournament is a scramble format, with a 9 a.m. shotgun start, at Eagle Valley Golf. Players can choose to play on either the East Course for the fun, or the West Course for the challenge.

Carson City Kiwanis golf tournament, run and bench press to support cancer awareness

Robey Willis, founder of the Carson City Kiwanis Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Day, urged participants to sign up early for this year’s golf tournament and other events.

“The golf tournament completely sold out last year,” he said. “It would be prudent for people to get in while they can.”

The second annual Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Day will feature a 5K walk/run, bench press competition and golf tournament, on Sept. 19 at Empire Ranch Golf Course. Willis said last year’s event was a success.

“We had a wonderful time,” he said. “It was just a ball.”

Carson City sheriff's log: Three jailed following street race on residential street

A Carson City man and two others were arrested Monday after allegedly street racing in a residential neighborhood in which a witness said he was nearly run over when he advised the racers to slow down, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

For something without wheels, consider the weekly pool tournament at Remedy’s on William Street.

This last weekend of August is filled with ways to celebrate your community. Carson Animal Shelter Initiative, better known as CASI, hosts their annual Bark, Whine, and Dine Fundraiser at Fuji Park. Animal lovers can also head to Carson Catalina Apartments for a rummage sale that benefits the Carson Tahoe SPCA. The Carson City Sheriff's Office young Explorers will host a fundraising car wash; The Marine Corp League can be found at the north Carson Walmart; half of the donations received will go to Deputy Howell’s family fund. And don’t miss out on the drought-friendly water balloon ice bucket challenge raising funds for ALS at Butler Meats on Sunday.

Nation’s top tourism marketers headline Nevada’s new Global Tourism Summit

The Nevada Division of Tourism will present its inaugural Governor’s Global Tourism Summit in November, featuring keynote speaker Chris Thompson, president and CEO of Brand USA, Lt. Gov. Mark Hutchison announced Thursday.

The Global Tourism Summit is the evolution of the long-running Governor’s Conference on Tourism, and will take place at the Hilton Lake Las Vegas Nov. 16-17.

Carson City Parks and Recreation's new mobile friendly software kicks in Sept. 4

On Sept. 4 Carson City Parks and Recreation's registration site, ActiveNet, will be upgraded to a new Customer User Interface. Parks and Recreation uses ActiveNet for many of the daily functions such as pool memberships, class and sport league registrations, out-of-school time programs, and facility rentals.

Sunday, August 23: Things to do around Carson City

Planes, trains, and automobiles await! The Nevada State Railroad Museum features rides on the McKeen Motor Car this weekend. Don’t miss out on a trip to Virginia City via the Virginia and Truckee Steam Train: locals get a discount on Sundays when they book online. Ormsby Post Acute Care is hosting a classic car show for their residents, so if you have an automobile that fits the bill, please head on over. The Minden-Tahoe Airport is the home to Aviation Roundup Air Show this weekend. You won’t want to miss the USAF Thunderbird Flight Team. An aviation air show at the Minden Airport, the coin show and fair at the Nevada State Museum, and a fishing derby for the kids at Little Washoe Lake are only the tip of the iceberg. The Pavilion at Mills Park is where you’ll find the annual Carson High Football Boosters Fundraising BBQ. The Quicksilver Dog Agility Trials are always fun to watch, and they’ll be at Fuji Park all weekend. Carson Lanes has family fun indoors and out all day long during their Bowling Blast-off.

Thursday, August 20: Things to do in Carson City

The mood has been somber in Carson City this week. The news of Sheriff Deputy Carl Howell’s shooting death has rallied the community, beginning with a large candlelight vigil held last Saturday at the Capitol. Today the officer will be laid to rest after a funeral service at the Reno Convention Center. A procession will leave the Carson City Courthouse at 9 a.m. and travel north along Carson Street. Various fundraisers have begun for the wife and four children that Howell leaves behind. For more information on the procession and how to donate, please go here and here.
