Carson City sheriff’s arrest log: Accomplice arrested in burglary, credit card fraud case
An investigation that led to the arrest of a Carson City man on burglary and credit card fraud charges expanded Tuesday with a 25-year-old accomplice booked on felony charges, a Carson City sheriff’s detective said.
Chelsea Cribbins of Carson City was booked on charges of burglary, credit card fraud, conspiracy to use a credit card and conspiracy to obtain money, possession of stolen property and obtaining money under false pretenses.
On Sunday, Carlos Contreras, 24, was arrested on several felony charges after allegedly breaking into a Hamilton Drive home, stealing credit cards, jewelry and other property and then using the credit cards at businesses. He’s being held on $111,137 bail.
According to the arrest report, officers and detectives began the investigation after the Aug. 23 burglary. Transactions of the stolen credit cards were recovered, showing a purchase at a convenience store on North Carson Street for $6.07 a gas station for $10 and Walmart for $280. Another card was used at a bank on Market Street for $303 and another card was used at the same bank for $478, the arrest report states.
A detective contacted Walmart managers with transaction details and learned they were captured on surveillance cameras. The detective recognized Contreras and Cribbins, who selected several items from the store and brought them to a register with Contreras, using the stolen credit card to pay for $280.36 worth of items. The couple left Walmart in a gold Lincoln Navigator.
Further investigation showed the pair had been stopped in the Navigator on Aug. 28, but Contreras ran away. Cribbins as arrested on warrant and drug paraphernalia charges and has remained in jail.
A detective then checked pawn shop records for stolen jewelry and learned that Contreras had sold five gold rings for $168 on Aug. 23 to a business in the 1900 block of North Carson Street. The victim positively identified the jewelry. The detective watched the surveillance footage from the business, in which he was joined by Cribbins. After the transaction the couple left with Cribbins holding the paperwork of the transaction. It appeared she participated in the use of the credit card and selling the stolen jewelry.
Cribbins, who remains incarcerated in the Carson City Jail, was interviewed. She stated she had nothing to do with the credit card purchases or the jewelry. She stated she did not ask Contreras questions as to where he got the credit card. She also stated Contreras gave her the jewelry to sell. She ended the interview and asked for an attorney, the arrest report states.
The detective checked the pawn shop system again and learned Cribbins had sold a gold chain for $8 to another business in the 1600 block of Highway 50 East on Aug. 24. The victim positively identified the chain with pendant. It was also learned the couple attempted to sell silver chains. After the transaction, the couple got into a physical fight in the parking lot in front of the store in which Cribbins was hit in the face with objects including a GPS unit, which was also stolen from the victim, the arrest report states.
Based on the information, Cribbins was charged for her involvement, having participated in the use of the stolen credit card at Walmart and sale of stolen jewelry a both both pawn shops. She was booked for burglary, fraudulent use of a credit card, conspiracy to use a creed card, conspiracy to obtain money under false pretenses, obtaining money under false pretenses and possession of stolen property. Bail: $52,274.
