Have you got your tickets yet? V&T Railway 2019 season begins with Mother’s Day train Saturday and Sunday. Kicking off its 2019 season, V&T Railway will hold a special Mother’s Day train on Saturday, May 11 and Sunday, May 12. Guests will experience a 24-mile round-trip ride through the historic Comstock, departing Carson City (Eastgate Depot) at 10 a.m. and will arrive in Virginia City at approximately 11:30 a.m., before returning to Carson at 4:15 p.m. Featuring 100-year-old Pullman coaches pulled by a heritage diesel locomotive, the ride will be fully narrated, allowing guests to experience the Old West during this pre-season, round-trip ride. Prior to departing the depot, guests will enjoy free mimosas, extravagant pastries and moms on board will receive a long-stemmed rose on their return to Carson. During the ride, guests will see several historic sites including abandoned mine shafts and a possible glimpse of the regions wild mustangs while passing through two tunnels during the trip. Once in Virginia City, families can enjoy sightseeing, historic tours, dining, shopping and much more before returning to Carson City. — 10th annual Scavenger Hunt Around Carson City Now Underway. Daily through May 31. In celebration of Historic Preservation and Archaeological Awareness month, the Carson City Historic Resource Commission has organized the 10th Annual Scavenger Hunt. This year’s hunt focuses on the history and culture of the capital city. The Commission crafted the hunt to be an event the family can do together. Participants will be given clues about people, places and events that are important to the community’s history. Using the clues, participants will research and locate the answers. Clues are available online. To ensure participants visit the various sites on the scavenger hunt, on-site photographs will be required with the submittals. Completed answers are due by 3:00 p.m. May 31, 2019. Answers may be submitted in person at 108 East Proctor Street or emailed to planning@carson.org.

— Healthy Communities Coalition speakers include Stand Tall and VARN. 9 a.m. Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties Thursday, May 9 meeting begins at 9 a.m. at the Silver Springs Community Center at 2945 Ft Churchill St. Guest speakers this month are from VARN and from Stand Tall. During HCC’s public breakfast meeting, George McNally, Attorney with Volunteer Attorneys for Rural Nevadans (VARN), will describe VARN’s services benefiting rural Nevada. VARN’s Pro Bono Project includes a panel of over 100 private and public volunteer attorneys to provide free legal services to low-income residents in Carson City, Churchill, Douglas, Lyon, Storey, Humboldt, Elko, and White Pine counties. VARN also offers the Lawyer in the Lobby program twice a month and various clinics or legal aid fairs throughout the year.

— Thursday Hike: Seven Steps and Ash Canyon Trail System hosted by Muscle Powered. 3 p.m. Join Muscle Powered for its free leader-led hikes each week to enjoy Nevada outdoors around Carson City! Meet at the parking area at the end of Foothill Road, off of N. Winne Lane. Water and sturdy closed-toe shoes required. Hat, sunscreen and hiking poles recommended. Bring a friend and/or friendly dogs. All hikes are 2-4 miles with duration of about 90 minutes, sometimes with elevation gains of 500’ or more. In case of bad weather, we will cancel. — 2019 Carson City RSVP Spring Celebration and Carnival begins; Family Night is Thursday. 5 to 10 p.m. Celebrating more than three decades of rides, games and fun, 2019 marks the 34th year that Nevada Rural Counties RSVP will host its Spring Celebration and Carnival at Mills Park in Carson City, May 9-12. Come out and join us for live music, great food, and craft vendors, Plus the excitement of carnival rides and games designed for all ages. Come on out and treat Mom to a Special Mother’s Day weekend event. This year's event takes place at Mills Park and begins on Thursday, May 9 and runs through Mother's Day, Sunday, May 12. Carnival Hours: Thursday, May 9 and Friday May 10, 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday, May 11, 1 to 10 p.m. and Sunday, May 12, 1 to 8 p.m. Family night $1 rides will be on Thursday and is sponsored by Carson City Toyota.

— Carson City CASA to host volunteer information hour tonight and May 16. 5 p.m. Every child needs a hero, but abused children need superheroes! Court Appointed Special Advocates, also known as CASA, will hold information hours on Thursday, May 9 and again Thursday, May 16 in Carson City. Come get your questions answered first and then hang out afterward as new volunteer training will begin. See first hand how the organization works. — Explore the Acrylic Pour: Blended is Better at Rustically Divine. 5:30 to 7 p.m. Enjoy the wonders of pouring as professional artist Dana Childs teaches you how to create modern-abstract fluid effects with acrylic pouring onto stretched canvas. — Dance Workshop for Couples at Yaple's Ballroom. In this beginner level workshop you must have a partner in this class, we will not be rotating. It can be a friend, husband, wife, boyfriend or girlfriend, you just have to have a buddy with you to be your partner. We are going to learn the style of dance of Night Club Two Step and some other exercises that will help you with your connection to your partner. $20. — Nevada Arts Council Presents: Facts and Figures. Daily, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Las Vegas artist Lolita Develay’s works consists mostly of oil paintings and watercolors executed in a trompe l’oeil (deceives the eye) intertwined with abstract features. She is currently exploring prevailing social values in American mainstream culture. These paintings embody her ultimate desire for lush surfaces and the luxury of time that allowed them to be created. — Student art show open at WNC’s Main Gallery at Carson City campus. Daily. The artistic talents of Western Nevada College students will be on display in the college art gallery for the next month. The 2019 Student Art Show will be shown through Wednesday, May 15 in the Bristlecone Building on WNC’s Carson City campus.The exhibit features juried artwork from WNC students who were enrolled in classes during the fall or are currently enrolled during the spring semester. Students will compete for first, second and third places in drawing, painting, collage, photography, graphic art, ceramics, sculpture and mixed media. Students will also have the opportunity to price and sell their artwork. WNC’s Main Gallery is located in the Bristlecone Building and is open to the public six days a week: Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

— Carson City art exhibition 'Creative Spark' features 32 area high school artists. The Capital City Arts Initiative hosts its exhibition, Creative Spark, at the Community Development Building, also known as the Brick, 108 E Proctor Street, Carson City. Thirty-two students from Carson, Dayton, Douglas, and Pioneer high schools have work in the exhibit. The free exhibition is available to the public now through May 29, 2019, Mondays through Fridays, 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Creative Spark includes a wide variety of art media including ceramics, collage, drawing, painting, and photography that show the diversity of the students’ creativity.

— Capital City Arts Initiative presents 'The Lay of the Land' at Carson City showing. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents an exhibition, "The Lay of the Land," by artist Fred Howland in the Community Center’s Sierra Room, 851 E William Street, Carson City. The exhibition runs now through June 30, 2019. Howland’s passion is to create a sense of time and place through his photographs. He returns to favorite sites to work, like Hope Valley and Genoa, returning to take repeat images in different seasons and lighting. His interest in landscapes go back to his New England roots where he was more comfortable in the outdoors than in school classrooms. The Sierra Room is open to the public during Carson City official meetings including the first and third Thursdays, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and many afternoons, Monday through Thursday, 5 to 8 p.m.

— "Home Means Nevada" photo exhibit debut at the Nevada Legislature. The Nevada Arts Council is unveiling a new traveling photo exhibition, “Home Means Nevada” that will start its journey in the hallways of the Nevada Legislature during the 2019 session. The exhibition features the works of 15 contemporary photographers, but which echoes famous photographs and artwork from the late 1800s and early 1900s that helped spur protections for many of our nation’s national parks. The exhibit highlights some of the unique treasures found on federally managed lands across the state, from bighorns to Burning Man, to the ancient rock art and petroglyphs in the Gold Butte area. The exhibition will be displayed in the Senate hallway of the Nevada Legislature, 401 S. Carson St. in Carson City.

— WNC Continuing Education offers Zumba classes. Zumba is a dance form and aerobics fitness program. Zumba involves dance and aerobic movements performed to energetic Latin and pop music from countries around the world. The choreography incorporates hip hop, soca, samba, salsa, meringue and mambo. Squats and lunges are also included. Students should wear comfortable clothing and tennis shoes, and bring a towel, water and a positive attitude. No prior dance experience is required — Zumba is about making friends, getting a workout, and enjoying yourself!
