I Love Carson City’s Weekend Event Summary: Oct. 3-4

Hello, Carson City. I'm suffering from an internet outage and want to make sure I get this information to you. I truly apologize that it is without my usual links or banter, but my little tablet can only do so much. As always, there is a great time to be had in Carson City, so please take a look at my list, grab your friends and family, and enjoy our great valley!

Outdoors with Don Q: The Fall season is full of all kinds of activities

1:22 a.m. on September 23 in Carson City was the official start of the Fall season, and with the arrival of that special season of the year that lasts until December 21 (the beginning of the Winter season), there are all kinds of activities occurring that might be of interest to you.
Here are some of them:

If you like to fish in the State of California, be advised that many of its creeks, streams, rivers, ponds, lakes and reservoirs will be closing on Nov. 15, and will not re-open until the last Saturday in April 2016.

Friday, September 25: Things to do in Carson City

It’s fireworks Friday here in Carson City. Harley Davidson is throwing a party for Street Vibrations with live music, vendors and more. Look to the sky around 8:30 p.m. to catch the fireworks show. Spruce up your resume and head to the Community Center. A job fair with more than 50 employers opens its doors to the public at 2 p.m. Go Big Blue! The varsity football game against Hug High School starts at 7 p.m. following the Homecoming Float Parade. Catch some live music at Living the Good Life or Westside Pour House. You’ll find a reason to laugh at Carson Comedy inside the Carson Nugget.

Handful of Nevada Day venues switch up for statehood celebration in Carson City

Longtime Nevada Day parade-goers will see some changes to the traditional setup this year. The Beard Competition will move from the Legislative Plaza to the the parking lot of the old Citibank — 308 North Curry — during the celebration Oct. 31 in downtown Carson City.

Senator Square: Homecoming week has arrived

The tradition of homecoming is once again here at Carson High School. Congratulations to the following students who have been nominated by their senior classmates as queen and king candidates: Tess Corda, Paris Regan, Kassidy Cox, Delaney Fine, Lindy Lehman, Haley Gray, Ikela Lewis, Todd Lani, Asa Carter, Conner Pradere, Joe Nelson, and Eddie Duarte.

Do you like shopping, Carson City? Check out the Vintage Fair at Du Sorrella downtown. The last Farmers Market of the season is at Third and Curry, so get your fix of fresh fruits, veggies, honey and more before the leaves fall. Wild Horse Children’s Theater is hosting a huge Warehouse and Multi-family sale; if you need a Halloween costume, you won’t want to miss it. The Teixeira Pavilion at Mills Park is where you’ll find the Autumn Earth Spirit Faire with vendors, workshops, and more.

New Undie Run Relay Takes Place at 26th World Championship Outhouse Races

The historic mountain mining town of Virginia City, Nevada continues its reputation for quirky events with the new Undie Run Relay as part of the World Championship Outhouse Races, Oct. 3-4, 2015. Teams of three compete in a relay race while sporting their best undergarments in hopes of winning the ultimate bragging rights.

Senator Square: Family night added to homecoming week activities

The tradition of homecoming continues at Carson High School the week of Sept. 21-26 with events every day for students and the community to participate. The newest event added to the week of homecoming will be the addition of a family night.

Happy Labor Day, Carson City! There will be two parades to enjoy today. Head up to Virginia City for their annual Labor Parade, followed by the Battle of C Street as part of the Great Civil War Days. The other parade is comprised of the thousands of people leaving Burning Man; watch out for their dust! Join Keep Tahoe Blue for their annual beach clean-up at Nevada Beach this morning, then head over to Heavenly Village for a car show and huge winter sports equipment sale.

Sunday, Sept. 6: Things to do around the Carson City region

From Carson City to Silver City, Fallon, Virginia City, Sparks and Lake Tahoe, Sunday is filled with activities as we round the corner into the three-day weekend. There's a 5K Remembrance Run in Carson City, a rib cook-off in Sparks, a farm-to-fork festival culinary festival and fireworks at South Lake Tahoe, the Cantaloupe Festival in Fallon, the Comstock Community Rummage Sale in Silver City and the Great Civil War Days Camp at Virginia City.

  • IHOP 5K Remembrance Run and Walk: free, informal, untimed five-kilometer run/walk is set to start in the parking lot at the Carson City IHOP: 3883 S. Carson St. at 7am and finish at the Nevada Guard's Office of the Adjutant General Complex: 2460 Fairview Dr. (7am-10am; Reflective running/walking gear is recommended and participants should follow the marked course; Civilian participants should arrange ride back to start line)

Nevada Day Classic

An annual event since 1989, the Nevada Day Classic - presented by the Tahoe Mountain Milers - is an 8K run, a 2-mile run and a 2-mile walk through the beautiful, historic West Side of Carson City, Nevada. The races precede the Nevada Day Parade celebrating Nevada's entry into the Union.

  • Take a ride on the Virginia and Truckee #25 Steam Engine at the Nevada State Train Museum Friday through Monday.

Chautauqua of Buffalo Bill Cody and Wild Bill Hickok at Dangberg Historic Park

Chautauqua performers Chuck Baldauskas and Doc Durden will present “Buffalo Bill & Wild Bill: Pals Together Again” at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Wednesday September 2, at 6:30 pm. The event is open to the public and free to attend.

'21 Days of Hope' campaign promotes cancer awareness as run up to HopeFest 2015

HopeFest's "21 Days of Hope" begins Saturday, August 1 and runs through Friday, August 21, During this time, Carson Tahoe Health encourages individuals and businesses to parade support for area cancer patients through social a media campaign.

Can you believe it? It’s the last weekend of July and the kids will be headed back to school in no time. Don’t be dismayed though, plenty of summer fun can still be found. Sign the kids up for the Capital City Kids’ Triathlon at the Carson Aquatic Center. Head out to Mills Park for a few laps on the train or a picnic. Don’t miss out on making a bowl for the Empty Bowls project at the Farmers Market; or let the kids run off to the bounce house while you make a bowl yourself.

SATURDAY:

  • Capital City Kids' Triathlon: Swim, Bike, Run at the Carson Aquatic Center: 841 N. Roop St. (registration begins at 7:30am, must check in 30 minutes prior to start time; $25 same day registration; ages 13-18 8am start; ages 11-12 8:45am start; ages 9-10 9:30am start; ages 7-8 10am start; ages 4-6 10:30am; must provide own bike and mandatory helmet)

Virginia City Nevada hosted an awesome Fourth of July Celebration. Parade, live music, and spectacular fireworks display. This is a long lived tradition that is loved by many locals and visitors alike.

Sunday, July 5: Things to do around Carson City

The weekend isn’t over yet. Enjoy breakfast at the Elk’s Club. They serve up pancakes and more every first Sunday. Genoa is a great place to spend a leisurely afternoon. Sweet Sippin Sunday is like a mini wine walk, only this month the small businesses are serving up rum-based cocktails. Help keep Tahoe blue: the annual beach clean-up after the Fourth of July needs all the help it can get.

Happy birthday, America! Today we celebrate our independence, and what better way than with a carnival. You might as well stay at Mills Park all day, the fireworks display starts when it gets dark. Tune into Magic 95.5FM and you’ll hear the choreographed music to go along with the oohs and aaahs. Where ever you choose to watch fireworks, please be safe. There are thousands of visitors in the Northern Nevada area this weekend, and law enforcement will be out in full force.

  • Free Swim for Active and Retired Military at the Carson Hot Springs (7am-10pm; outdoor pools only)

Over the next few days you will be inundated with options: where to go, what to see. Fourth of July weekend in Northern Nevada is a great time. Kick it off today with the Nevada State Train Museum; a parade of trains and unlimited ride passes. The carnival at Mills Park opens every day at noon and has rides, games, funnel cake and cotton candy; you’ll find a $5 off coupon at the RSVP booth. Independence Day Celebrations in the Carson City Area

Fourth of July celebrations abound in the Carson City area. Fireworks can be found in Carson City, Reno, Sparks, and at both north and south shore of Lake Tahoe. There are several daytime events going on as well, so grab the kids, friends, and family and have a great Independence Day weekend!

Ceremony opens Carson City Motor Officer Training Challenge, downtown festival

Motorcycle patrol riders from Nevada and California were welcomed by dignitaries Saturday for the opening of the 12th Annual Extreme Motor Officer Training Challenge in downtown Carson City.

The event brings dozens of law enforcement officers to Carson City annually to compete in team riding and obstacle courses along Carson Street. Saturday's events will include 2 man tethered riding, 4 man team relay, slow ride, an obstacle course and last man standing.

Bikes, and cars, and brews: oh my! Downtown Carson is awash in activity on Saturday. Battleborn Brews, Bikes, and Bubbly features the Extreme Motor Officer Training Challenge, vendors, a brewfest, moustache competition and more. The Karson Kruzers are hosting their annual car show at Fuji Park, but will be making their way downtown after it’s over, so there will be plenty of cool cars to admire. Mojo Green takes the stage at 7 p.m. and you can head into the Carson Cigar Company to enjoy Reno’s newest Pink Floyd Tribute Band, Scarlett Moon at 9 p.m.

Classic cars, motor bikes, beer judging, tattoo and pin-up contests, food, live music and array of family-friendly activities will fill downtown Carson City and Fuji Park this weekend for three events: The Battle Born 1864 Brews, Bikes and Bubbly fundraiser, the 12th annual Carson City Sheriff's Office Extreme Motor Officer Training Challenge and the 31st Run What-Cha-Brung car show.

Small town, big fireworks and parade July 4 in Virginia City

Fourth of July on the Comstock in historic Virginia City, Nev. promises one of the region’s longest firework displays. Echoing off Mt. Davidson at 6,200 feet elevation, the “kaboom” rocks the old 1850s historic mining community as the fireworks soar high above the town and Six Mile Canyon, making it visible from nearly anywhere in town.

The Karson Kruzers will host its 31st annual Run What-Cha- Brung car show with the kickoff Friday, June 26 in the back parking lot of the Carson Nugget and Saturday, at the Fuji Park Fairgrounds in Carson City.

A Deja vu Airplane Ride over Carson City

An event at the Carson City Airport had my blood running faster than usual Sunday! An old Ford Tri-Motor plane came by to visit. This plane has an interesting history with a personal touch for my family. My son-in-law Glenn Ware, grew up in Kansas where this plane was first based, and he took a ride in it when he was 15 years old. He has pictures of it in his scrapbook.

I don’t mean to make this hard on you, but you have some decisions to make. All day, all night, all weekend long, there are numerous activities throughout our area. Take a good look at the list, grab your friends, family, and kids, and have a great weekend. The Experimental Aircraft Association is hosting the Ford Tri-Motor this weekend, and has Young Eagles flights for the kids: registration and orientation is at 8 a.m. Head over to Eagle Valley Golf for free family golf day.
