Living the Good Life Nightclub-Bistro-Lounge hosts Nevada Day staging with food, drink specials
Nevada Day will be celebrated at Living the Good Life Nightclub-Bistro-Lounge with early morning Nevada style breakfast burritos, doughnuts and drink specials, including Irish coffee and its famous bacon Bloody Mary, served up beginning at 7 a.m. in the parking lot, adjacent to the staging area for the Nevada Day Parade.

Carson High School's annual homecoming has arrived. Kicking off the event-filled week was an assembly Tuesday where seniors got their first taste of what candidates they might want to vote for to represent as their 2014 Homecoming royalty.

This year's candidates are just as lively as ever. Candidates for Homecoming queen are: Abbey Dudley, Lindsay Hettrick, Bailie Zuber, Chantal Torres, Sarah Christl and Jessica Basa. King contestants are: Jared Hearn, Dylin Rooker, Nolan Shine, Fred Christensen, Casey Stevens and Kyle Kunz.

The Carson City Foster Family Support and Recruitment Coalition, see our website here, will have an entry in the Nevada Day Parade again this year and is calling for volunteers to walk with us and hand out flyers telling folks to come talk with Foster Family recruiter Lori Nichols about Foster Care at the FamFest after the parade.

The annual tradition of Homecoming is upon us. There are many activities taking place this week, both athletic and non-athletic. Each day has a particular dress-up theme, a lunch time activity, and an evening time activity that students can participate. Tuesday’s dress up day is “crazy hat” day.

An annual event since 1989, The Nevada Day Classic — presented by the Tahoe Mountain Milers — is an 8K run, a 2-mile run/walk through the historic west side of Carson City. The races precede the Nevada Day Parade celebrating Nevada's entry into the Union.

This year, for the race's 25th anniversary and the Nevada’s 150th, the Classic will be organized in partnership with the Carson City Guide Dog Club and all net proceeds will go to Guide Dogs For The Blind.

Every week (for the last two years) I have scoured the internet, followed the pages of local businesses and organizations, searched website calendars, and compiled a list of anything and everything going on in this community.

Smiles were everywhere as the tails wagged behind running and swimming dogs! The people in our community continue to be incredibly supportive of CASI’s mission to help homeless, abandoned and lost animals have the best chance possible at being adopted or reunited with families that love them. It's almost that time of year again at Carson High School. That one week of school where everybody dresses like a fashion-less hippy, has wild date proposals and bonds the student body closer as a school. This of course would be the one and only Homecoming week.

This year's homecoming theme is "Around the World" and the date is set for October 14th-October 18th. It would appear that Homecoming is looking very promising thanks to the leadership of this year's Master of Ceremonies: Jared Hearn and Sarah Christl.

Many commemorative pieces have been created in the past year in celebration of Nevada’s 150th Anniversary of Statehood but the Sesquicentennial Saddle, a legacy project, showcases craftsmanship from one of the oldest professions. Leather and saddle craftsman Armondo Delgado, of J.M. Capriola Co., spent roughly 600 hours hand crafting the one of a kind saddle and Nevada silversmith Mark Dahl, designed and created the silver work.

Tickets are on sale for the 4th annual Nevada Day Governor's Banquet, Oct. 28 at the Grand Sierra Resort. The event will feature Gov. Brian Sandoval, senators Harry Reid and Dean Heller, Congressman Mark Amodei and Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki. The event benefits The Boys & Girls Club of Nevada.

Tickets are $60 per person, or a reserved table for 10 is just $500. Doors open at 6 p.m. The evening also includes table service dinner, silent and live auctions, and a Nevada 150 birthday cake and cake cutting ceremony.

Nevada's steam driven Sesquicentennial celebration culminates in Carson City with the Saturday, Nov. 1 Nevada Day Parade. This year’s parade theme, “Happy 150th Birthday, Nevada” encourages Silver State revelers to salute Nevada’s Oct. 31 1864 admission to the union as the 36th state.

Many celebrations are scheduled throughout the Silver State in the month of September. These Nevada 150 events celebrate all things Nevada and help bring awareness to the 150th Anniversary of Statehood. The following events are held Sept. 15 through 30.

Fall is that time of the year when there are a multitude of all kinds of interesting outdoor activities in this general area of the Far West. Here is a listing of some of the fall activities that might be of interest:

Apple Hill, California.
Basque Festival in Carson City.
Candy Dance in Genoa.
Celtic Celebration in Reno.
Closing of the 2014 fishing seasons at Fort Churchill Cooling Ponds, Hinkson Slough, Hobart Reservoir, Mason Valley Wildlife Management Area, North Pond and Topaz Lake in Nevada.

Carson City was recently named as the fastest warming city in the United States. To remind the world that we do not live in a dry, barren, hot wasteland, the Carson City Visitors Bureau hosted a “Beat The Heat” photo contest on Facebook.

A retired mechanic from Carson City and some of his friends have pulled out all the stops this Labor Day weekend for a ‘round the clock truck building project that may rival anything done on TV reality shows.

John Jackson’s plan: Refurbish a 1969 Peterbilt 358 into an old school hotrod using parts from six similar rigs. A feat like this would take months if it were a weekend garage hobby and probably cost tens of thousand of dollars.

The deadline to submit applications for Official and Signature Nevada 150 events will be 5:00 p.m. Friday, Sept. 12. Over 400 events have been held across the Silver State since Nevada Day 2013, in celebration of Nevada’s Sesquicentennial, with many more ahead. "We at Nevada Day are very pleased to be adding three new events to this year's Nevada Day Celebration, in addition to bringing back reoccurring favorites," said Nevada Day committee president Ken Hamilton.

The first Wild Horse Faire will arrive in Virginia City, Aug. 23, hosted by the Silverland Inn, Let 'Em Run Foundation and the Virginia City Tourism Commission.

The Carson City Democratic Women's Club Meeting will be held at headquarters, 502 E John Sttreet, Saturday Auguat 9, 2014. Doors open at 9:30 AM and a light bteakfast will be available. The program begins at 10 AM. Featured speakers are Supreme Court Justice Hardesty who will explain Measure 1 on the November Ballot which is to add an Appellate Court system to Nevada.

The Dayton Valley Days Committee invites crafters, vendors and anyone who wants to reach a large number of people to reserve booth space for the 26th annual street festival held in the heart of historic Old Town Dayton.
Dayton Valley Days is scheduled Sept. 20 and 21 with an expected attendance over 15,000.

Many across the country, including here in northern Nevada, are celebrating Independence Day. For those who wanted to have more of a vintage 4th of July celebration, hundreds came to the Comstock for the annual parade.

"It's an awesome small town parade," said Karen Woodmansee, parade organizer. "If you want to know what America was like, it's still up here in Virginia City."

The July 4 holiday weekend has arrived and there are plenty of activities going on today through the weekend around Carson City.

The Nevada Rural Counties RVSP carnival runs through the weekend at Mills Park. Tonight RSVP will host a spectacular fireworks celebration over Carson City to go along with its 22nd annual holiday carnival.

There's still time to enter the "beat the heat" photo contest sponsored through the Carson City Visitors Bureau.

The contest is designed around summer visitors to Nevada's capital city and beating the heat. Participants have a chance to win lodging, dining and entertainment passes, rodeo tickets and more.

Fourth of July on the Comstock rocks. Virginia City offers one of the region’s longest firework displays. Echoing off Mt. Davidson for nearly 30 minutes, you'll feel the boom in your bones this July 4 as the fireworks soar high above the town and into Six Mile Canyon, making it visible from nearly anywhere in town.

Easy Company, 506th parachute infantry regiment, 101st Airborne Division was not the only band of brothers. Most of the 16 million men who served our country during WW II became closer to their shipmate or foxhole buddy than their own family. The First Special Service Force, the Black Devils, was a brigade of commandos from two nations, 60 percent USA and 40 percent Canadians.

The Karson Kruzers will be hosting their 30th annual "Run What-Cha-Brung" car show at Fuji Park Fairgrounds in Carson City on June 28 with the "kick-off" being held at the Carson Mall on Friday, June 27.
