Cyber Awareness: Feds urge citizens to secure computers to protect personal information

Since October 2004 National Cyber Security Awareness Month, administered by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, reminds citizens of the importance of protecting not only individual identities, finances and privacy but also our country’s national security, critical infrastructure and economy. Cyber security is a responsibility shared by all — the public sector, the private sector, and the general public.

Tahoe Mountain Milers partner with Carson City Guide Dog Club for Nevada Day Classic

An annual event since 1989, The Nevada Day Classic — presented by the Tahoe Mountain Milers — is an 8K run, a 2-mile run/walk through the historic west side of Carson City. The races precede the Nevada Day Parade celebrating Nevada's entry into the Union.

This year, for the race's 25th anniversary and the Nevada’s 150th, the Classic will be organized in partnership with the Carson City Guide Dog Club and all net proceeds will go to Guide Dogs For The Blind.

UNR geologists in the Carson City area for Earth Science Week; public invited on field trip

National Earth Science Week highlights the dynamics of geosciences while encouraging communities to explore the beauty of their surrounding environments. In celebration of the event, the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology will host the 17th Annual Earth Science Week Field Trip, Oct. 11 and 12, 2014. The same field trip will be run on each day, so you have two chances to attend.

The Nevada State Museum, Carson City earns grant for digitization, Navajo collection

A project to care for, inventory, and digitize Navajo weavings and Southwestern ceramics at the Nevada State Museum in Carson City has earned a $23,118 grant from The Institute of Museum and Library Services. The Reno Fiber Guild and the Carson Sierra Spinners also donated $500 each to help with the local preservation project. Data from the project will be available online in fall 2015.

IMLS museum grants support a wide variety of projects that create learning experiences, strengthen communities, improve care of collections, and provide broad public access.

Nevada Day 2014: 25th Annual Nevada Day Classic Run/Walk

More than 400 runners and walkers of all shapes and sizes — and even attire — hit the streets of Carson City every year for the annual Nevada Day Classic 8K Run and 2 Mile Run/Walk. The event, organized by the Tahoe Mountain Milers running club and its members in cooperation with many sponsors has supported many community organizations over the years. This year’s event will benefit Guide Dogs for the Blind.

Lake Tahoe area ski resorts host job fairs through October

More than 3,400 seasonal employees are needed by Vail Resorts for the upcoming ski season at their Lake Tahoe resorts Heavenly, Kirkwood and Northstar. Three job fairs will be held in October where perspective employees can meet with resort personnel and have interviews.

This first job fair will be held on Saturday, Oct. 11, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Red Cliffs Lodge at Kirkwood Mountain Resort.

Permits available for fall open burn in Carson City

The Carson City Fire Department will allow open burning Oct. 11 to Nov. 9, 2014. The open burn period gives residents an opportunity to dispose of accumulated weeds and yard debris.

In order to make this a safe endeavor for those involved, the Carson City Fire Department will require a burn permit with a valid permit number before burning will be allowed. Permits must be obtained no less than 24 hours prior to conducting an open burn.

Calling all Artists: NAA's Judged Nevada Day Exhibit Seeks Paintings and Photographs

The Nevada Artists Association invites local and regional artists and photographers to enter its 64th Annual "Nevada Day" Art Exhibit at Carson City's Brewery Arts Center NAA Gallery. This judged exhibition opens Monday October 27th and runs through December. The show is open to all Northern Nevada and California artist and photographers, NAA membership is not required.

Sesquicentennial themed corn mazes featured across Northern Nevada

In celebration of Nevada’s 150th Anniversary of Statehood, several locally owned farms have transformed their corn fields into intricate Sesquicentennial themed corn mazes. Tours will be at various times throughout September, October and November. Six different Nevada farms will host a wide array of activities and games including corn mazes, petting zoos, pumpkin patches, prizes, and more.

The final forum sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Northern Nevada, Sierra Nevada Forums, American Association of University Women and partnership Carson City will be held tonight, Tuesday, at 6 p.m. in the Sierra Room of the Carson City Community Center. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the public is invited.

The forum features candidates for Lieutenant Governor and Attorney General. Candidates for Lieutenant Governor include Lucy Flores, Mark Hutchison, and Mike Little. Invited candidates for Attorney General include Adam Laxalt, Ross Miller and Jonathan Hansen.

6th Annual Cancer Sucks 5K Run Saturday Oct. 4

Join us for the 6th Annual Cancer Sucks 5K Saturday, Oct. 4, 8:00am, 300 S. Curry St. (behind the Firkin and Fox) in Carson City. Run, walk or crawl! Dress up, create a team and just come out and have fun. Costumes are encouraged.
Proceeds benefit the Carson Tahoe Health Foundation’s support of area cancer patients. These funds are used for patients who can't afford unexpected expenses that arise when fighting this awful disease.

Lake Tahoe boat inspections return to launch ramps for fall and winter

Beginning Oct. 1, boat inspections at Lake Tahoe will move to select launch ramps and winter hours will begin. Tahoe RCD inspectors will be stationed at the Cave Rock boat launch from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. seven days a week, weather permitting.

No inspector will be stationed at Lake Forest boat launch from Sept. 8 through Jan. 2, 2015 due to a rehabilitation project. Inspections will be available at Lake Forest once the project is complete. Please call the hotline for availability of alternative inspection options.

2nd Annual Vintage Fall Harvest Faire Oct. 4

Due Sorella (fondly known as Two Sisters) will be holding its 2nd Annual Vintage Fall Harvest Faire Oct. 4 from 9am-4pm in the parking lot behind the store at 202 N. Curry St. Carson City during the Downtown Wine Walk. Farm-fresh produce, Vintage Vendors, Antiques, Arts, Crafts, Food, and music will take over the corner of Musser St. and Nevada St. Some vendors already committed include Capital Eats, Workman Farms, Vintage Becky M, and Miss Maggy's Stuff.

The store is open Tuesday-Saturdays 11am-5pm and features unique and vintage gifts, crafts, and a rabbit named Sweet Pea.

Jimmy John's says North Carson Street restaurant among among 216 that had credit card data stolen

A Jimmy John's location in Carson City, one in Reno and two in Las Vegas were listed by the company as being among 216 restaurants that were affected in a security breach that happened over the summer.

Historic radio series that chronicles Nevada folklife now online for Nevada 150 celebration

Nearly 30 years ago, the Nevada Arts Council and its partners created a radio series that would chronicle the fabric of Nevada folk heritage from experts in local arts that include bit and spur making, the language of gaming, neon glass blowing, cradleboarding and more. In celebration of the state’s 150th birthday, the full 13-episode series “Home Means Nevada 1986: Folklife in the Silver State” has been digitized.

Tickets go on sale for Nevada Day Governor's Banquet

Tickets are on sale for the 4th annual Nevada Day Governor's Banquet, Oct. 28 at the Grand Sierra Resort. The event will feature Gov. Brian Sandoval, senators Harry Reid and Dean Heller, Congressman Mark Amodei and Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki. The event benefits The Boys & Girls Club of Nevada.

Tickets are $60 per person, or a reserved table for 10 is just $500. Doors open at 6 p.m. The evening also includes table service dinner, silent and live auctions, and a Nevada 150 birthday cake and cake cutting ceremony.

Free introduction to fly fishing clinic hosted by NDOW

The Nevada Department of Wildlife is sponsoring an introduction to fly fishing clinic Friday, Oct. 10, from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. This clinic is designed for entry level fly anglers and is free to all participants. The class will cover basic gear, knot tying, and casting. We will not be on the water. The class is limited to the first 20 persons who sign up.

WHAT: Class is geared for entry level fly anglers. We will cover equipment, knot tying, and demonstrate techniques for fly fishing moving water and still water.

Nevada ballot issues featured at tonight's first League of Women Voters election forum

Monday night will be the first of a series of election forums hosted by The League of Women Voters of Northern Nevada, Sierra Nevada Forums and American Association of University Women. A candidates forum will be held Thursday.

For the first forum, ballot issues will be presented. Ballot issues will be addressed by presenters stating the positive and the negative for each item. Issues to be covered include the Mining Tax and Education Initiative, also known as the Margins Tax, and the Question 1 Appellate Court issue.

Final Environmental Impact Report released for North Lake Tahoe CalPeco Electric Project

The U.S. Forest Service, Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, and California Public Utilities Commission have released a final environmental document for the electrical line upgrade project proposed by California Pacific Electric Company, now known as Liberty Utilities, in the North Lake Tahoe area.

South Lake Tahoe air show officials monitor King Fire developments; blaze prompts free admission to Saturday event

Smoke from the King Fire that originated in Pollock Pines has entered the Lake Tahoe Basin and is affecting visibility and air quality. City officials are closely monitoring the King Fire along with wind patterns from NOAA, visibility with the FAA and local and State law enforcement.
