Nevada Day Parade

Deep Thoughts, Cheap Thoughts and Bonbons

The New Year has begun, and quite surprisingly the past year has gone by extremely fast. Unsurprisingly, rarely did anything surprise me during my first year as a Supervisor. Granted there are moments when one believes he/she is making the right and prudent decision, but I did learn that regardless of how one votes, there will always be consequences.

What is most popular in the public opinion could and often does influence and create pressure for city staff to revitalize their position on the issues of the day, and then they may or may not make an agenda item for that subject matter.

Goodbye to Rocky the 'Furry Ambassador of Kings Canyon'

We had in our midst an amiable ambassador named Rocky, an Alaskan Malamute who resided at the top of Kings Canyon. Rocky was well known in his neighborhood, spreading goodwill as he visited neighbors and enjoyed long walks with his family.

While his size was impressive at about 185 pounds, he was a gentle giant.

75 and loving it: Parade Marshal Shaughnessy was in first Nevada Day Parade in 1938

Mike Shaughnessy once joked to a Rotary club that the reason politicians were put at the front of the Nevada Day Parade was that it was better to put the horses’ behinds ahead of the horses.

The quip made the Reno paper the next day and earned Shaughnessy an early morning call from then-Gov. Mike O’Callaghan, who was notorious for reading people the riot act.

Committee wants greater participation in Nevada Day

In the 74 years since the Nevada Day Parade moved to Carson City, the number of Nevada Day events has multiplied to include contests, parties, carnivals, exhibits and food events. At the same time, the region from which participants come to celebrate in the capital city has diminished.
“It used to be a statewide event,” said Guy Rocha, retired state archivist who continues to stay involved with Nevada history and events. “Now, Nevada Day in Nevada is celebrated principally in Western Nevada.”
