Bear nearly 'crashes' Nevada Day Parade
Nevada celebrates its birthday every year with the Nevada Day Parade down the main drag of the state capital, Carson City. This year, a Sierra Nevada 400 pound male black bear nearly “crashed” the parade, the Nevada Department of Wildlife reports.
Early Saturday morning, reports began coming in to the Carson City Sheriff’s office that there was a bear in east Carson, near Lone Mountain Cemetery, about a half mile from the parade route, said NDOW spokesman Chris Healy.
Carson City Sheriff’s personnel controlled a crowd of neighborhood onlookers while Nevada Department of Wildlife game wardens successfully tranquilized the male black bear in the backyard of a home near the intersection of Joshua Drive. and Slide Mountain.
Saturday's bear was the third caught in Carson City since Tuesday. Like the bears caught on Tuesday and Wednesday, the bear had never been handled before by NDOW. After sleeping off the dose of tranquilizers, he will be released Sunday in the hills above Carson City as were the other two bears caught this week.
Bear activity in western Nevada is expected to stay “busy and active” for at least the next few weeks. Bears are still in the physiological state of hyperphagia where their in-take of food can increase from 3,000 calories a day to as many as 25,000 calories per day. “Their one and only job is eating this time of year and they are very good at it,” says black bear biologist Carl Lackey. Sierra Nevada black bears usually go into hibernation in between Thanksgiving and Christmas as food sources become harder to find.
Persons needing to report nuisance bear activity can call the NDOW’s Bear Hotline telephone number at (775) 688-BEAR (2327). For information on living with bears persons can go to www.ndow.org and find the ”Bear Logic” page on the web.
