Memorial Day events at the Northern Nevada Veterans Cemetery in Fernley
The public is invited to attend two Memorial Day events at the Northern Nevada Veterans Cemetery located in Fernley, Nev.
The first is on Saturday, May 27, 2017 with a "Flag-In" event. Volunteers are asked to arrive no later than 8:30 AM to assist in placing an American flag on each gravesite. Participants will receive a free commemorative WW1 pin to show appreciation in preparing the cemetery for the main Memorial Day ceremony.
Then, on Monday, May 29, 2017 there will be a Memorial Service at the cemetery beginning at 11:00 AM. The event is expected to last an hour. Based on previous years, more than 3,000 people are expected to attend the Memorial Day ceremony. You may want to arrive early due to parking and to also obtain the best viewing spot.
The keynote speaker will be Kevin Tokarski, Associate Administrator for Strategic Sealift -U.S. Department of Transportation, Maritime Administration. The Master of Ceremonies will be the Nevada Department of Veterans Services Deputy Director, Fred Wagar. The ceremony will also include performances by the Maytan Band, conducted by CW4 Alan Pefley, U.S. Army.
The event is sponsored by the Northern Nevada Veterans' Coalition and hosted by the Nevada Department of Veterans Services. The Coalition is a group of veterans as well as non-veterans whose main focus is to support the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Fernley, Nevada. The cemetery serves veterans and their families from Northern Nevada and Eastern parts of California.
Directions: The Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery is located East on I-80 at Exit 48 in Fernley. If coming from Reno, turn left after exiting the freeway and go under I-80 past the Denny’s/gas station. Turn left on Mission. Turn right on Veterans Way to the Cemetery.
