Veterans Guest House to receive 'Veteran Supporter of the Month' Award at Governor's Mansion
CARSON CITY, Nev. — Reno's Veterans Guest House is considered a "Home Away from Home" for U.S. military veterans and their families. The only facility of its kind in the country, the Guest House provides temporary, overnight lodging for veterans or military members while they are undergoing treatment at any medical facility in the Reno-Sparks area.
The importance of the Veterans Guest House to the military and veterans' community, as well as its impact in providing assistance to the men and women who have served, will earn the Veterans Guest House the Governor's "Veteran Supporter of the Month" Award and recognition.
The "Veteran Supporter of the Month" ceremony will take place at the Governor's Mansion, 606 Mountain Street, Carson City on Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at 10:00 AM. The public is invited to attend.
The Veterans Guest House was established in the early 1990's after some veterans noticed people sleeping in their cars in the VA medical center parking lot. One woman was seen getting out of a car one cold morning and when asked, she informed these men her husband, a veteran, was in ICU and she and her children had no means to sleep anywhere other than their car. The home was then established by founders who adopted the mantra, "Never again on our watch!"
Last year, the Veterans Guest House served close to 5,400 visitors. In the past 22 years, the Guest House provided more than 70,000 nights of lodging. The Guest House is supported completely through the generosity of the private sector and the community. All funds received stay locally and go directly to support the operations of the Guest House. The Veterans Guest House, Inc. is a Nevada Non-Profit 501(c)(3) and is not affiliated with the Veterans Hospital or the Veterans Administration.
The "Veteran of the Month" and "Veteran Supporter of the Month" awards are provided through the Nevada Department of Veterans Services. The awards are part of the Governor's commitment to make Nevada the "friendliest State in the nation" to its military community and veterans.
