At least 49 employers sign on to June 14 Carson City job fair

With at least 49 area employers signed on, a June 14 Carson City job fair may be one of the city's biggest in recent memory.

The fair, which runs from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center, will feature employers from area casinos, local manufacturers, home health, home improvement outlets, department stores, retail, banking, staffing agencies and restaurants.

Here is the Carson City road construction and maintenance report beginning Monday through June 9.

Due to continued construction of the Carson City Freeway project, Snyder Avenue is closed between E. Roland Street and Center Drive. Center Drive and Silver Sage Drive are also closed south of Appion Way. Bennett Avenue is closed between Ponderosa Drive and Bigelow Drive.

Beginning Monday, June 3, Bigelow Drive will be permanently closed between Roland Street and Bennett Avenue. Detours will be signed.

Carson City woman charged with murder in November death of 18-month old toddler

A 23-year-old Carson City woman faces murder charges following the death of an 18-month-old toddler, Justin Watson, in November 2012.

Brittany Michelle Paugh turned herself into the Carson City Sheriff's Office Thursday. She is being held without bail. Charges include first degree murder, child abuse, child abuse causing death, second degree murder with child neglect and child abuse with substantial harm. The toddler died of significant trauma to the brain.

Sheriff Ken Furlong said the arrest came after an extensive investigation that involved medical specialists outside the state.

Here is the Carson City area road construction and maintenance report for the week of Monday, May 27 through June 2. Curry Street will be closed Monday from Robinson Street to Spear Street due to a special event.

Meanwhile during the week, there will be road work on Long Street between Roop Street and Molly Drive. No delays are expected. There will also be road work on Nye Lane between Hot Springs Road and Northgate Lane. No delays are expected.

Utility work for various projects will occur on the following roads this week with flagger controlled traffic and possible minor delays:

— Carson Street from Washington Street to Hot Springs Road.
— Hot Springs Road from Carson Street to Roop Street.

Here is the Carson City road maintenance and construction report for the week of May 13-19.
Beginning Monday, May 13 through Friday, May 17, Lompa Lane will be closed between Highway 50 East and Menlo Drive.

Detours will be marked. In addition, the JAC bus routes 2A and 2B will be re-routed to follow the detour route and the bus stops on Lompa Lane and Menlo Drive will be temporarily closed during the road closure.

Here is the Carson City road maintenance and construction report through May 12: The outside westbound lane of William Street will be closed Sunday from Carson Street to Plaza Street due to construction activity on the building adjacent to the roadway.

The northbound lane on Fairview Drive will be closed between Fifth Street and Edmonds Drive due to roadway maintenance. Detours will be marked.

There will be road work on Long Street between Roop Street and Molly Drive. No delays are expected.

Sharp object, crude key carved from top of Ajax can found in Carson City jail cell

A Carson City jail inmate faces a felony charge of possessing a dangerous weapon after authorities on Tuesday found pieces of shaped metal in his jail cell.

The metal objects were made from the top of an Ajax can. One was shaped into a key, presumably to get out of handcuffs, and the other was transformed into a thin piece of metal, shaped into a sharp object, presumably to hurt someone.

There will be intermittent lane closures on Fairview Drive from Edmonds Drive to Carson Street beginning Sunday, April 28, and continuing into the week due to roadway maintenance. There will also be intermittent closures on Longview Way from Ash Canyon Road to Kings Canyon Road. Minimal delays are expected.

Carson City woman jailed after allegedly turning $12 check to $120

A Carson City woman faces a felony forgery charge after she allegedly took a check that was given to her for $12 and altered it to $120, authorities said.

Marlena Acosta, 27, faces the felony charge, and a misdemeanor charge of obstructing an officer, after Carson City Sheriff's Office deputies learned March 5 that a check issued to the woman from FISH for $12 — to be used to obtain a Nevada identification card from the DMV — had been altered to $120 and cashed.

Two jailed for attempting to cash stolen checks

Two men face felony charges including forgery and obtaining money under false pretenses after being arrested Saturday in Carson City.

Stefan Lee Houser, 21, of Dayton and Joel David Germain, 43, of Long Beach, Calif., were arrested at 4:45 p.m. April 13 in the area of Lone Mountain and Winnie Lane.

DUI stops make up bulk of recent Carson City arrests

Carson City Sheriff's Office patrol officers made several misdemeanor DUI-related arrests through the holiday weekend and into the first part of this week. The most recent arrest was early Tuesday morning.

A 47-year-old Carson City man was arrested in the 2200 block of East William Street and faces a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence. According to the arrest report, officers called to a casino at around 1 a.m. after a witness reported an intoxicated man was seen getting inside a truck and preparing to drive.

Man jailed for felony parole violation; Two Dayton women arrested following meth sting sale

A 27-year-old Carson City man faces a felony charge of being in violation of parole after he was found Thursday under the influence of drugs at a gas station. He was also allegedly in possession of drug paraphernalia and told a witness, concerned about his well being, that he was "on H" which is street slang for heroin.

Carson City authorities make felony drug trafficking arrest

A Carson City man was arrested and faces multiple felony drug charges after authorities found 14 grams of meth hidden in the man's underwear.

Eduardo Segura, 27, was arrested at Hot Springs Road and Roop at 10 a.m. Feb. 8. He was pulled over because of a vehicle license plate that was missing. Upon contact, officers recognized him because of other entanglements with the law including time in prison that involved a Carson City shooting in which he was deported to Mexico following the sentence, the arrest report states.

Carson City authorities busy with felony and misdemeanor-related arrests

Carson City authorities made numerous felony and misdemeanor arrests recently, including arrests for domestic violence, car theft and probation violation court orders.

A 25-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Feb. 7, 7:04 p.m. in the 400 block of Simone Avenue on an outstanding felony warrant out of Douglas County.

Carson City prepares for widespread increase in flu, vaccines readily available

With widespread flu being reported around the nation, Carson City and Douglas County health officials say they have large supplies of flu vaccine.

Based on recent reports from the CDC, the flu has started to peak nearly 5 weeks early this year, with significant activity reported in over 41 states with 18 deaths reported in children thus far. The predominant current flu strain that is being reported with widespread activity, H3N2 (Influenza A), appears to have good match to the flu strains in this year’s vaccine, according to a news release.

Carson City authorities arrest man with gas can, burglary tools

A Reno man faces several misdemeanor charges after Carson City authorities found him in an empty lot siphoning gasoline from a work truck.

The 34-year-old man was arrested at 1:09 a.m. Dec. 18 in the 300 block of Hot Springs Road and faces charges of petit larceny, gross misdemeanor possessing burglary tools, possession of stolen property, tampering with a motor vehicle and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The Lodge to Offer Free Respite Care

The Lodge Assisted Living and Memory Care Community in Carson City will give busy caregivers a break this holiday season by offering free respite care for their elderly loved ones.

It’s often difficult for caregivers to find time for themselves and that challenge is compounded during the busy holiday season. Because of that, Lodge employees will offer the free respite help on December 12th and 19th from 11am to 3pm.

Friends and family ask for help finding missing Carson City man

Friends and family of a missing Carson City man are concerned about his whereabouts and have asked the public for help finding him. The man's name is Jerry Santos, 68. He is 6 feet tall, weighs 175 pounds, gray hair, with hazel or green brown eyes. He is a resident of West Long Street, where he was last seen. Santos went missing, his friends report, at around 3 p.m.
"We're concerned about his well being," said friend Truckee Paxton.

Baby's injuries grave, Carson City sheriff confirms; case under investigation

Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong says an 18-month old boy isn't expected to live after authorities were called Saturday about injuries the child had sustained.
The case is under investigation. The father of the child and the girlfriend of the father who was taking care of the child are cooperating with the investigation, Furlong said.

Carson City man facing assault charges on officers said to have 'abnormal strength'

More details have emerged following an arrest Friday in which several Carson City officers attempted to arrest a man, who reportedly had displayed abnormal human strength. The 35-year-old Carson City man, Tyrone Michael Tyson, faces multiple charges including battery and assault on police officers and resisting.
The arresting officer in the incident, who was injured, said in his seven years on the force, he had "never been in a fight this violent where all less lethal weapons were not effective." The Nevada Highway Patrol and Douglas County also responded to assist.

Here is the Carson City road report for the week of Oct. 22-28: There will be intermittent delays on Roop Street between Hot Springs Road and Winnie Lane throughout the week due to sidewalk construction. Meanwhile, the Nevada Department of Transportation will be paving their maintenance yard located on Fairview Drive just east of the Carson City Freeway interchange. The outside westbound lane on Fairview Drive will be closed at this location.

Jump Around Carson City makes bus route adjustments

The Carson City Regional Transportation Commission announced Wednesday some minor adjustments to JAC Routes 2A and 2B, including the extension of service to the Parkway Professional Center on Goni Road and the new Nevada Health Centers location on Research Way.

“Our customers alerted us to the need to access medical and social service facilities in this area and we responded with this route adjustment,” said Ken Smithson, Transit Coordinator in a news release. “This allows customers to ride safely to and from their destinations in this area.”

Gang incident being forwarded to Carson City District Attorney

Multiple 911 calls came in — shots had been fired around the 1800 block of Long Street on Saturday night, around 11:15. When the deputies arrived on scene, they “made contact with a known gang member,” Sheriff Ken Furlong said.
