Here is the Carson City road maintenance and construction report for the week of March 26 to April 1.
Beginning Tuesday, March 27, through Thursday, March 29, Edmonds Drive will be closed to through traffic between Clearview Drive and Bennett Avenue. Detours will be marked. In addition, there will be striping activity near the National Guard at the Fairview Drive and Edmonds Drive intersection on Monday, March 26, and Tuesday, March 27. Minor delays are expected.

There will be work at the following locations as a result of the Freeway Landscaping Project. No closures are expected, but traffic control will be in effect. A description of the work being done at each location is included below.

  • College Parkway in the vicinity of the Freeway – The Comstock Lode is the theme at College Parkway where images of ore veins will be complimented by steel cutouts of miners working under the bridges.

Love Shouldn’t Hurt – Recognize the Signs of Dating Violence

This month, Get Healthy articles have been focusing on love – loving your heart, celebrating Valentine’s Day, and sexual health. But what happens when love isn’t what it’s supposed to be? What if violence is involved and someone is at risk for physical or psychological harm? Since February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month, this column will bring attention to some of the warning signs of dating violence, and highlight some of the resources in our community that are there to help victims of abusive or controlling relationships.

Carson City Road Report for Feb. 13-19

Due to a project to complete a new north-south water transmission line on the east side of Carson City, there will be work at the intersection of Edmonds Drive and S. Lompa Lane. There will also be work on Edmonds Drive between Clearview Drive and Bennett Avenue. There will be flagger controls and minor delays are expected.

Weather permitting, the Nevada Department of Transportation will have one northbound lane closed on South Carson Street from Fairview Drive to Koontz Lane on Tuesday, February 14, and will have one southbound lane closed in the same area on Wednesday, February 15.

Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer of men and women in the United States – more than cancer, accidents, and communicable diseases.

Each year, nearly one in four deaths is caused by heart disease, but luckily, this is something we can all work together to change. There are many risk factors for heart disease: high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, cigarette smoking, overweight and obesity, poor diet, physical inactivity and alcohol use. Many of these risk factors can be modified or eliminated by choosing to lead a healthy lifestyle.

The holidays are happier if you are well and healthy to celebrate. Follow these tips to keep your season merry and bright!

1. Wash hands often to keep yourself from spreading germs and getting sick. The holiday season is one of socializing, parties, and spending time with loved ones – and of sharing germs and illness. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and clean running water for at least 20 seconds. Hand sanitizer is a good alternative if you can’t get to a sink.

Get Healthy Carson City: Got a flu shot?

The holidays are approaching. Have you gotten a flu shot? Carson City Health and Human Services encourages everyone who has not yet been vaccinated to protect themselves and their loved ones during the holiday season by getting a flu shot. National Influenza Vaccination Week, Dec. 4-10, is a great opportunity to remind people that flu shots are beneficial and effective even if they are received in December and January.

Celebrate World AIDS Day with a FREE HIV Test

Carson City Health and Human Services encourages everyone to learn their HIV status today as the Health Department will join thousands of other healthcare providers and clinics across the country to celebrate World AIDS Day.

While low-cost HIV testing is always available at the health clinic on Long Street, testing will be offered for FREE today, Thursday, December 1. No appointment is necessary and the free testing will be available from 9-11 a.m. and 1-4:30 p.m.

Free Flu Shots for Food

Carson City Health and Human Services is collecting food donations for its annual Homeless Christmas. From November 15 through December 9, donate 2 cans of food and receive a voucher for a free flu shot or nasal spray vaccine, redeemable during our regularly scheduled immunization hours on Thursdays.

Man arrested for biting off his brother's finger in Carson City bar

Frankie Lee Lemos, 40, of Mill Creek, Washington, was arrested Monday morning by a Carson City deputy in Douglas County after he allegedly bit off part of his brother's finger during an argument in a bar.

According to the arrest report, deputies were called to a bar on East Long Street where they met the suspect's brother, minus one part of his left pinky finger. The victim told deputies that his brother had left the bar in a cab after the incident.

Carson City deputies arrest two men attempting to steal copper wire

Two Utah men were apprehended early Sunday morning after deputies witnessed them breaking into the NV Energy storage yard near the 800 block of East Long Street, allegedly to steal copper wire.

Carson City Transportation Commission moves forward with projects

The Carson City Regional Transportation Commission awarded several new projects at its June 8 meeting. The newly awarded projects will be funded primarily through federal and state grants. Here's a list of the projects:

Road report for June 6-12

Due to utility work, Musser Street will be closed between Carson Street and Curry Street on Thursday, June 9, at 7:30 p.m. The road is expected to reopen at 5:30 a.m. on Friday, June 10. Once Musser Street has been reopened, a lane closure with flagger control is expected throughout the remainder of the day.

Sidewalk improvements will continue along Long Street between Molly Drive and Saliman Road. Minor delays are possible and JAC bus stops in this area may be temporarily closed.

Road report for May 23-29

Sidewalk improvements will continue along Long Street between Molly Drive and Saliman Road. There will be single lane traffic with flagger control. In addition, JAC bus stops in this area may be temporarily closed.

There will be shoulder work at the intersection of 5th Street and Butti Way. No lane closures are expected.

Clearview Drive is closed between Edmonds Drive and Line Drive for construction on the next phase of the NDOT freeway project. Detours are marked. The road is expected to reopen by November of 2011.

Carson City area road report for May 16-22

The following activities along Carson City roadways will take place due to utility work:

  • On Monday, May 16 through Wednesday, May 18, work is scheduled on Curry Street near the intersection with King Street. There will be single lane traffic with flagger control.
  • On Thursday, May 19, there will be single lane traffic with flagger control on Research Way south of College Parkway.

These subjects were arrested over the weekend by Carson City Sheriff's deputies:

—Christopher Glen Hammond, 35, was arrested Saturday evening in the 1900 block of Long Street for misdemeanor DUI, failure to maintain lane, open container and gross misdemeanor child endangerment.

The traffic signal at the intersection of N. Saliman Road and E. William Street will be modified on February 22. A signal will be added for vehicles traveling northbound on N. Saliman Road and turning left onto westbound E. William Street. No interruptions to traffic are expected, but please use caution in this area.

Utility work will occur on Russell Way between Northridge Drive and Long Street on February 22-23. Two-way traffic will be maintained with flaggers.

Shoulder work will occur at Stanton Drive and Monte Rosa Drive due to sidewalk improvements.
