Carson City man facing assault charges on officers said to have 'abnormal strength'
More details have emerged following an arrest Friday in which several Carson City officers attempted to arrest a man, who reportedly had displayed abnormal human strength. The 35-year-old Carson City man, Tyrone Michael Tyson, faces multiple charges including battery and assault on police officers and resisting.
The arresting officer in the incident, who was injured, said in his seven years on the force, he had "never been in a fight this violent where all less lethal weapons were not effective." The Nevada Highway Patrol and Douglas County also responded to assist.
Tyson was arrested in the 800 block of East Long Street at 5:40 p.m. According to the arrest report filed by officer Dan Jones, deputies responded to a Lee Street address for a report of a man yelling and damaging property in the area. As deputies arrived, dispatched advised the man was walking east across Roop Street and that five people had called about Tyson's behavior.
A deputy advised dispatch that he located Tyson near the Senior Center and advised the man would not stop walking. The man was repeatedly told by officers to stop walking, including over a patrol car PA system, the arrest report states. Officers made contact with the man, who resisted and a deputy deployed a taser into Tyson's back, where he fell to the ground but then "bounced back up to his feet," the arrest report states.
The officer attempted to grab the man's right arm and place him in handcuffs but the man violently pulled his arm away and swung his elbow at the officer as he continued to be tased. The officer responded after the man began to fight him, striking him in the head and face.
"The taser did not seem to have any affect on him," the arrest report stated.
The man was tackled to the ground and deputies tried to gain control of his arms, in which a deputy got in the way and himself was tased.
Two deputies then got on Tyson's back to restrain him but the man pushed himself up. Several knee strikes were attempted and the man continued fighting "like he was feeling nothing," the arrest report states. Tyson again began swinging his fists and kicking at the four arresting officers on the scene.
More officers arrived and a deputy deployed pepper spray to the man's face, which struck the man and other officers. Tyson, who was laughing during the entire incident and appeared unfazed by the taser strikes and pepper spray, reportedly grabbed one of the arresting deputies by the testicles, squeezing to the point of the officer feeling ill, the arrest report states.
On his feet and in a fighting position Tyson was struck in the legs with a baton which didn't work and he remained in a standing position. The arrest report states Tyson is a white male, approximately 170 pounds and standing 5 feet, eight inches. The man "showed abnormal strength and no amount of force affected him at times during this five minute fight," the arrest report states.
Another deputy pulled Tyson to the ground, in which Tyson bit and punched officers and he was again tasered and cuffs were placed on him. He was sedated at the scene before being transported to the hospital and arrived at the emergency room resisting.
Tyson faces multiple gross misdemeanor charges of battery and assault on police officers, misdemeanor obstructing, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct. He remains in jail as of Tuesday.
