Editor: I have been in the antiques business in Downtown Carson City for more than 15 years. The last six years have been extremely difficult, but perhaps our state may have reached a turning point.

In the last 15 years I have been involved in dozens of community meetings and planning sessions that were generally boring and filled with doomsayers and negativism. I've spent hundreds of hours gnashing my teeth listening to every malcontent in town who says that saving our Downtown is a waste of time and money. They have said it's by-the-way impossible.

Carson City's hiring climate continues to strengthen much like the rest of the state, with unemployment figures showing a 2.1 percent drop in November to 7.1 percent. Statewide the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate is 6.9 percent, the 46th consecutive month of improvements, the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation announced Friday.

Nevada’s labor market will continue to show marked improvement through 2017, said Bill Anderson, chief economist for the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation’s Research and Analysis Bureau.

Legislation that will allow for the transfer of more than 130,000 acres of federal land in Nevada to state or local control cleared its final hurdle in Congress Friday. And that could mean jobs — lots of them.

The things people do to trees sometimes horrify me. Topped trees or those with hacked instead of pruned limbs; trees planted under power lines; and trees left without water in long ago removed lawns are a few of my pet peeves. Improper staking is another.

The City of Yerington and Lyon County are pleased to announce that Friday, the U.S. Senate passed the Congressional legislation to transfer 10,400 acres of land from the federal government to the City of Yerington.

The same bill passed the House of Representatives on Dec. 2014. Section 3009, the “Land Conveyance to Yerington, Nevada” was included in the National Defense Authorization Act and will now go to President Obama for signing before year-end.

Democrats, modern liberals and progressives often say they’re concerned about income inequality. So, they propose more redistribution: higher taxes on the well-off and higher public subsidies for others.

Adding subsidy increases to their ever-growing regulatory system and other public spending drove total government spending relative to our economy to record post-WWII levels under President Obama. Yet they still want more.

The off tilt haters of Mr. Barack Obama just cannot do enough to try and tear the man down. The GOP Barn is empty for the presidency in 2016-and wise Democrats are all rooting for Romney Trump Kamikaze ticket. The economy is doing well, gasoline prices are way down, and he handled the Ebola "crisis" perfectly. That left wing liberal fishwrap called Forbes recently analyzed the Obama economy versus Mr. Reagan's economy-and Mr. Obama's has outperformed Mr. Reagan's of 30 years ago...

The delightfully great and fresh gossip from a New York Fundraiser that Mitt Romney may yet try again to be our lected president delights every Democrat with their thinking cap on. Western Nevada College has grant funding available for individuals who have lost their jobs and seek enrollment in an accelerated Machine Tool Technology or Welding Technology program.

Up to 12 students can receive up to $2,250 for the semester to cover student tuition, fees, books, and supportive services, and do not require income verification. Funds are limited and will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis to qualified participants who fulfill application requirements. Dislocated Worker programs for the spring semester begin on Tuesday, Jan. 20, at the Carson City campus.

Unemployment in Carson City fell by 2.7 percentage points relative to October 2013, to 6.8 percent, the largest year-over-year decline for Carson City since March 1999, according to figures released Friday by Nevada’s Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.

Initial Nevada jobless claims in October are down 1.9 percent from October 2013 figures, according to figures released Thursday from the Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation. There were 14,124 initial claims for unemployment insurance filed in Nevada for the month.

While claims now appear to be at a stable level, initial claims have fallen compared to the previous year in 54 of the past 59 months, said Bill Anderson, chief economist for Nevada’s Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.

More than $161 million was invested in rural Nevada in 2014 by the Department of Agriculture's Rural Development agency to support housing, business and community facilities. Since 2009, the rural agency has provided more than $987 million to strengthen rural Nevada’s families and communities.

These recent articles are a faithful representations of the Party Line. Of course that party line is dead wrong, but at least the writer does a good job presenting it.

The Comstock Foundation for History and Culture has established a paramount goal of “enabling a sustainable network economy and culture by preserving and elevating the uniqueness of the Comstock Lode experience.”

The Foundation was created to subordinate to the needs of the district, some critically urgent if not already in an emergency state. The Foundation is only a small cog in a larger network of people and organizations that love this territory and where collaboration, not conflict, provides the hope of a lasting legacy of the great past.

My wife and I were on the fence about whether or not to purchase the downtown building at 716 North Carson, previously known as Washington Street Station. After all, the building was more than half empty and had not attracted a new tenant in five years.

A bank had repossessed the building two years previously and had been unable to sell it even as it gradually cut the initial listing price almost in half. And to top things off, the building had extensive water damage throughout caused by a leaky roof, and the few tenants it did have were unhappy with conditions.

A good friend of the Carson City Chamber of Commerce passed away Monday of a heart attack. Pete Livermore was a community icon and did much for the community we know today. He was the “father of youth sports” and worked diligently to make certain the children of Carson City played on the best fields money could buy.

Recently, a few naysayers have written to local newspapers, criticizing the effort of the Comstock Foundation for History and Culture, a 501(c)(3) organization, to raise funds to preserve historic resources within the Comstock Mining District, a National Historic Landmark.

Carson City's unemployment fell to 7.1 percent in September, down from August’s 7.5 percent and 2.4 percent over the stretch of a year, according to figures released Friday from the Nevada’s Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation. Statewide the unemployment rate fell to a seasonally adjusted 7.3 percent in September, the lowest it has been since July 2008.

In September, 13,560 initial claims for unemployment insurance were filed in Nevada, a slight decline compared to both the previous 12-month average, which was 14,339 and 6-month average that stood at 13,955, the Nevada’s Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation reports Thursday.

However, it is up slightly from the level seen in August which had 13,063 initial claims, said Bill Anderson, chief economist for the agency.

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, in partnership with the Nevada Department of Agriculture, is offering a free workshop Nov. 13 to train people throughout the state how to properly handle and use pesticides. The workshop is meant for certified applicators and people who regularly handle pesticides as part of their jobs, such as farmers, ranchers, park employees and groundskeepers.

The Nevada State Demographer’s Office at the University of Nevada, Reno has released its most recent population projections for Nevada and its individual counties, projecting through 2033.

More than 3,400 seasonal employees are needed by Vail Resorts for the upcoming ski season at their Lake Tahoe resorts Heavenly, Kirkwood and Northstar. Three job fairs will be held in October where perspective employees can meet with resort personnel and have interviews.

This first job fair will be held on Saturday, Oct. 11, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Red Cliffs Lodge at Kirkwood Mountain Resort.

As many as 45 employers will take part in a job fair on Friday from 2 to 4:30 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center.

Reducing the amount of Nevada small business closures is the goal of a new monthly workshop designed to educate business owners on how to assess their venture prior to licensing and launch. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, about half of all new establishments survive five years or more and about one-third survive 10 years or more.

Fulcrum BioEnergy’s Sierra BioFuels Plant that is being built in Storey County received a $70 million grant boost from the Department of Defense’s Advanced Drop-in Biofuels Production Project, Nevada Sen. Harry Reid announced Friday.

The grant award follows the Sept. 4 announcement by U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack at the National Clean Energy Summit that the Department of Agriculture had finalized a $105 million loan guarantee for the Sierra BioFuels plant.

Carson City's unemployment rate fell slightly to 7.5 percent in August along with Nevada's overall unemployment rate which also dipped to 7.6 percent, the lowest since August 2008 and down 2.2 points from a year ago, the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation reports Friday.

Nevada's initial August unemployment claims fell 15.4 percent over July of this year, but are up 1.6 percent compared to 2013 figures for the month.

Initial claims have fallen compared to the previous year in 53 of the past 57 months, and August’s level, at 13,063 claims, is the fifth lowest for any month since the end of the recession, said Bill Anderson, chief economist for Nevada’s Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation.
