Ralph Denny, Sr.: A good man among our common men

Saturday, I attended a funeral in a somewhat cheerful mood. It was a celebration of the life of Ralph Denny, Sr., and he would have wanted it upbeat.

Over 350 people filled Carson City’s First Christian Church’s sanctuary and foyer. Ralph was not a celebrity or public figure, and few such folks were there – just the heart and soul of our local communities in abundance.
He was a fine man with such a great and joyous impact over 50 years on so many folks that most came in the same mood as me: sad to see Ralph gone, but feeling so much richer for knowing him, and wanting to celebrate him.

Carson City employment still fell by an annual average of 200 jobs over-the-year, a decrease of 0.6 percent from average 2012 levels, however the benchmark put back 100 more jobs than was initially reported in 2013.

Proposed 20/20 Group Compromise

Let's ignore the 80/800 group of businesses in Carson City, for the moment, and consider meeting the 20/20 group in a compromise over the sales tax increase to pay for their proposed ten million dollar corridor improvements. Why not have them put up half the money of $5 Million ($250K each) and the city can match their investment for the remaining half? Let's all compromise and meet them halfway. If they are willing to put up their money, where our taxes are to be spent, then let hear it for compromise.

“Carson City has gone through some tough economic times and continues to,” Abowd said. “We have needed to be careful in our planning and how we spend available dollars in order to create sustainable, relevant opportunities that have immediate positive impacts, and build a future we can be proud to leave our children and grandchildren.”

Column: Write a Life Review to Your Family

Maybe it would be a blessing to your family if you wrote (or dictated) a Life Review? The normal basics include: date and place of birth; names of parents; childhood friends, schools, stories; details about marriage(s); education; designations and awards; employment jobs, activities, stories, promotions; places of residence; hobbies, interests and activities; charitable, religious, fraternal, political and other affiliations; disappointments (and how you handled them) and other individual attributes.

Wow! That is quite a list to get you started.

Nevada jobless figures fall to 8.8 percent in December, Carson City sees slight increase

While unemployment fell to 8.8 percent statewide in December, the lowest since November 2008, the jobless rate in Carson City climbed from 9.1 to 9.3 percent, according to Nevada’s Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation figures released Monday.

Unemployment rates for the state’s metropolitan areas, including Carson City, are not adjusted for seasonality therefore the overall decrease in jobless figures are outside the main population cores. Reno's unemployment went from 8.2 to 8.4 percent, and Las Vegas, 8.6 to 8.9 percent.

The Value Proposition

Rational Carsonites carefully deploy their finite personal capital for maximum value and tangible results. Conversely, our city's officials serially ignore the value proposition, favoring redundant, feel-good projects lacking objective analysis, justification and worthwhile benefits. Core civic services and infrastructure maintenance suffer.

The recent initiative to raise sales taxes, projected to saddle taxpayers with $15 million of additional long-term debt, is largely ($13 million) targeted for more indoor basketball courts and arterial street beautification projects.

Letter: Playing politics is not good for Carson City business climate

This is a letter to the editor addressed to Carson City Board of Supervisor Jim Shirk: Jim, Your vote Thursday although disappointing was not a surprise. I believe either you have no experience in running a business and its challenges or you have no respect for the power of small business. We small business owners are also tax and fee payers to not only City, State but also Federal government. We are also the employers.

Column: How to Kill A Recovery

Did you know that the Small Business and Entrepreneurship Council has ranked Nevada as the 3rd best tax system for business in the U.S.? They also ranked California as 45th!

Perhaps some folks don’t understand the big difference between Nevada and California. It’s really quite easy. Less regulation and lower taxes. In California, business is treated as the “enemy” and in Nevada; business is treated as a partner in helping bring in new jobs, money, growth, etc.

Common Core - A Stab at the Heart of American Education

They say 45 states have adopted the Common Core “State” Standards for grades K-12. If you have not heard about them yet, that’s because they rammed it through with the same “you have to pass it to find out what’s in it” arrogance that gave us obamacare. The two of them are pillars of the “fundamental transformation” that candidate Obama promised in 2008.

Letter to the editor: A Modest Proposal

To the editor: We all were exposed to “Political Theatre” at its best and worst. The drama, fear mongering, and name-calling, with the same old threats seems old and tired today. It was a very bad, long movie, especially because everybody knew how it would end. But, we went ahead and spent millions to display the ineptness of our entire Government.

Nevada demographer: Carson City population for 2013 projected at 55,122 residents

The Nevada State Demographer’s Office at the University of Nevada, Reno has released its most recent population projections for Nevada and its individual counties, projecting through 2032. After seeing population declines in 2011, 2012 and this year with 363 less people living here, Carson City's projected population is 55,122.

“As our state recovers, people should bear in mind that Nevada was hit by three economic factors in the last decade: the housing bubble, the spike in fuel prices, and the financial crisis. Even so we grew by 35 percent from 2000 to 2010,” Jeff Hardcastle, state demographer, said.

Letter: Where is Carson City’s Mary Poppins?

Even the wise, kind and responsible Disney nanny character would face a daunting task were she presented with the continuing public policy fiascos in our troubled town. Mary handled her unbridled charges with aplomb and urgency. Many of our elected and appointed officials need to employ these traits.
