Healthy Communities’ speakers Thursday focus on K-12 students and also housing eviction
Healthy Communities Coalition of Lyon and Storey Counties meets on the second Thursday of each month. The Coalition’s next public meeting is Thursday, August 13 via Zoom at 9 a.m.
Email Quest Lakes at quest@theodata.com for the Zoom meeting connection.
This month’s speakers will address two timely and important topics. Attorney Drew Wheaton of Nevada Legal Services will offer updates and information on eviction, a growing concern due to ripple effects of COVID-19.
Next, Michelle L. Trujillo, M.Ed, an author, inspirational speaker and educational consultant, will give a presentation titled “Taking Care of Ourselves and Each Other so that Together, We Can Take Care of Our Students.” Named Nevada’s 2016 Innovative Educator of the Year, Trujillo has appeared on television and radio across the nation as a guest expert.
What Is the Coalition? Whether its organic school gardens, mobile dental days at schools, tobacco and opioid use prevention, nutrition and diabetes education, or job skills training, Healthy Communities uses collaborative strategies to promote opportunities for health and wellness with a prevention first approach.
Healthy Communities is comprised of dozens of local, state, federal and tribal group partners; hundreds of community volunteers; a board of directors and staff, all working together on a common mission to strengthen communities in the Lyon and Storey regions by increasing access to 1)health care; 2) affordable, locally grown food; and 3) sustainable community-based development opportunities that serve the common good and build local assets and self-reliance.
