Thursdays get busy in Carson City. You can choose the Legislative Showdown Basketball game at Carson High and watch the battle of the Donkeys vs. Elephants. The WNC Wildcats take on the College of Eastern Utah this afternoon on the baseball field. The monthly Francis Humphrey Lecture Series at the Nevada State Museum features a slide-show and talk about various geothermal features around the world. It’s Wednesday in our fair capital city and that means jazz and blues: jazz jam tonight at Sassafras and lunchtime blues and Americana at Comma Coffee. For those of you in Dayton, may I suggest you see what the talented students at Dayton High are up to: their annual Night of the Arts is open to the community and showcases art, theater, music, and culinary savvy.

Start the week off with a dose of art. The traveling exhibit, Always Lost: A Meditation on War, will be leaving the Legislature building after Wednesday. Thanks to the Capital City Arts Initiative, art now adorns the Sierra Room in the Community Center: the first exhibit is titled Tuscarora. Think about how art can enhance downtown if you attend the public input sessions regarding the upcoming downtown rejuvenation project.

This National High Five Day I’m throwing out a virtual high five to the University of Nevada Cooperative Extension for putting on this year’s Capital City Farm Days at Fuji Park. 4-H is alive and well in our region, and rightfully so. Agriculture is a huge part of what makes this state great. The program is geared toward school-children, but is open to the public today and tomorrow if you want to learn more about ranching and farming in our region.

24 businesses checked, one sold alcohol to a minor in March compliance operation

One Carson City business out of 24 that were checked earlier this month failed a compliance check by selling alcohol to a minor, according to the Carson City Sheriff’s Office.
The compliance check was conducted Friday, March 20 from 5:30 p.m. to midnight. In violation was Maverik gas station and convenience store located at 1451 W. College Parkway.

The sun is shining, the flowers blooming, the birds chirping, the wind gusting, and Carson City is hopping! Easter fun can be found this weekend at the annual EGGstravaganza at Carson Tahoe Medical Center, the Children’s Museum, the Carson Mall, and the Brewery Arts Center.

Head over to Mills Park for the Vietnam Veterans Day Celebration, complete with military vehicles, exhibits, and more. For demonstrations from soldiers with an even older history, the Nevada Civil War Volunteers will be in Dayton Saturday.

It’s Veterans and Military Day at the Legislature today, complete with a display of the various services available to our Veterans set up in the front foyer. On this day in 1982, a ground-breaking ceremony was held in Washington D.C. for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Carson City has a Vietnam Veterans Memorial of its own located in Mills Park. The memorial will be the site of a Welcome Home Celebration this Saturday for Vietnam Veterans Day.

It’s a good weekend to be a kid: the Kerak Shrine Circus is in town! Well, it’s in Reno, but that isn’t too far of a drive for elephants, clowns, and cotton candy. Also in Reno, but intended for a slightly older audience, is the Lady Luck Tattoo and Art Expo, coincidentally held at Circus Circus.

For the outdoorsy-types you can join in the March to End Senior Hunger 5K in Dayton; the 5K Glow Run benefitting the Western Nevada College Softball Team; or join a ranger at Washoe Lake State Park for a guided hike.
