'Mr. Pickles' Presents to Carson City Leisure Hour Club
On Wednesday, April 15, Brian Crane (aka “Mr. Pickles”), nationally recognized syndicated cartoonist, will speak to the Carson City Leisure Hour Club on the inspiration for his cartoon strip “Pickles.”
Mr. Crane joins the Leisure Hour Club members close to the 25th anniversary of the debut of the comic strip "Pickles" in April 1990. His comments will provide the group with a little peek behind the curtains of how he creates Pickles, how he got started, and where he gets my ideas for the nationally recognized strip.
The cartoonist was born in Twin Falls, Idaho, but grew up in the San Francisco Bay area. He graduated with a degree in art from Brigham Young University in 1973. Crane and his wife, Diana, have lived in Sparks for 30 years. They have 7 children and thirteen grandchildren.
Brian Crane’s Pickles is a daily comic strip featuring Earl and Opal Pickles, who have been married for over 50 years. It shows the funny side of family and friendships and is syndicated by the Washington Post Writers Group. Soon after Pickles’ debut in 1990, Crane “retired” as an art director for an advertising agency in Reno, Nevada, to devote his full attention to his comic strip.
In 2001 Pickles was named Best Comic Strip of the Year by the National Cartoonists Society. In 2012 he won the award for Cartoonist of the Year. Pickles topped comics polls across the nation again and again, and it appears in over 900 newspapers around the world, including the Nevada Appeal.
Copies of Mr. Crane’s books titled "How Come I Always Get Blamed for the Things I Do?" ($15) and "Oh, Sure, Blame It on the Dog" ($16) will be available for purchase. They are both collections of some of his favorite strips from the past. He has agreed to sign and sketch a personal message in any of the books purchased.
If you would like to attend this event, please call Dorothy Link at (775) 885-2542 no later than Thursday, April 9 to make your reservation. The meeting is preceded by a buffet dinner at 6:30 in the Carson Nugget Capitol Ballroom. Reservations for dinner are required.
The Leisure Hour Club, established in September of 1896, is Carson City’s oldest continuously operating social organization. Now celebrating its 118th year, the organization continues to focus on its goal of promoting knowledge on important issues, science, music and literature.
