January presentations statewide teach radon safety, offer free radon test kits

CARSON CITY — January is National Radon Action Month, and University of Nevada Cooperative Extension’s Radon Education Program is offering free short-term radon test kits to Nevadans from Jan. 2 through Feb. 28. Radon test kits are available at Cooperative Extension offices and partnering locations, as well as at presentations, statewide.

A 34-year-old Carson City man was arrested Tuesday after allegedly interfering with the driver of a vehicle he was a passenger in, causing it to crash, a sheriff’s deputy said.

National Weather Service issues thunderstorm warning for Western Nevada

UPDATE: 4:45PM: At 4:05 p.m. Saturday, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm 10 miles southwest of Gardnerville, moving north at 10 mph. Dime size hail and wind gusts up to 50 mph will be possible with this storm. Brief heavy rain is also possible with this storm. Outflow winds could reach as far northwest as South Lake Tahoe.
Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm. Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe shelter inside a building or vehicle.

Comstock era logging bull wheel featured at Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park tour

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. — Join a park ranger on a guided tour of the historic bull wheel, located near Incline Village. The Bull Wheel was part of the Great Incline Tramway of the Sierra, and was used for logging during the Comstock era, 1859 to 1880 in Virginia City.

The Comstock mining operations required a massive supply of wood, mostly taken from the forest surrounding the Lake Tahoe Basin.
