Carson City arrests: Man jailed for suspicion of fourth DUI
A 41-year-old man was arrested Wednesday for suspicion of felony fourth DUI, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.
Joshua Appelt of Reno was arrested at 2:22 p.m., in the area of Saliman Road and Fifth Street. He also faces misdemeanor charges of making an illegal u-turn and failure to yield.
According to the arrest report, a deputy on routine patrol was approaching Teague Road and observed a white pickup do an illegal u-turn in front of his patrol vehicle on East Fifth Street.
The deputy had to immediately hit the brakes to keep from hitting the pickup, the arrest report states. The vehicle stopped at a red light at Fifth and Saliman and then drove past the designated stop line. The vehicle then started to turn north on Saliman Road and had to stop to avoid a pedestrian crossing the street.
The deputy conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle and made contact with Appelt. He had red watery eyes and a strong smell of alcohol coming from his person. The deputy asked for his registration and insurance. The man fumbled through all the papers and was unable to find the correct documents, the arrest report states.
The deputy asked the man to exit the vehicle and perform standardized field sobriety tests. The officer read the questionnaire. The man admitted to drinking two shot size bottles of Early Times whiskey and stated “take me to jail. I’ve been to prison for this before,” the arrest report states.
He showed signs of impairment and was unable to complete the tests and refused to continue. He stated he would not do physical tests and again asked to go to jail. He provided a preliminary breath test of .428, the arrest report states.
He was taken into custody for suspicion of DUI and transported to the hospital for medical clearance. He stated he would cooperate with an evidentiary blood draw. A phlebotomist took the evidentiary blood sample at the hospital.
A criminal history check was done through dispatch. Appelt had a prior felony conviction from Washoe County for a third DUI in August 2003. Bail: $20,199.
