In the business environment change brought on by COVID-19, there will be winners, maintainers, and losers. Although much is out of our control, business leaders who lean into innovation and what they can control are more likely to maintain or even win.

The Nevada Rural Counties RSVP Program (RSVP) has taken proactive steps and the necessary precautions to respond to the COVID-19 (novel Coronavirus) outbreak and support communities across its 15-county service region including Carson City. The most vulnerable among us rely on RSVP’s volunteer services. Given the increased risks for those we serve such as elders, veterans and adults with a disability, RSVP is limiting interaction between its volunteers and clients by shifting programs to meet the emergent needs of care recipients.

I have spent the last week helping businesses communicate and innovate during the COVID-19 pandemic. With a little lull in my meetings, I turn to you in Carson City to provide insights. I hope they inspire you to think differently and utilize this uncertain time to create a little certainty, however you can.

CARSON CITY, Nev. — Casey Neilon, Inc. announced the promotion of Lucas Gonzalez, CPA, to Shareholder effective January 1, 2020.

CARSON CITY — The old saying that legends never die might also be said about old locomotives. Many of those iron horses, long lost to time or the scrap heap, live on through historic photographs, artwork and the hearts and minds and skillful hands of railroad buffs.

On February 28, NV Energy filed its Natural Disaster Protection Plan with the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada per Senate Bill 329, that outlines how the company plans to help protect the public from the impacts of natural disasters on its electric infrastructure that have been experienced in other Western states.

NV Energy today made a rate filing with the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada (PUCN) that if approved, will result in an overall $24.1 million rate decrease for northern Nevada electric customers effective October 1, 2020. This is the second rate reduction filed by NV Energy this month.

Noble Studios, a creative digital performance agency, is calling on all Nevada nonprofits from Las Vegas to Reno to Elko and beyond to submit an application for their community service program, Noble Deeds, by March 6, 2020. The Noble Deeds program provides more than $200,000 in pro bono digital marketing services to one or more Nevada nonprofits during the calendar year.

Heading into the weekend, there’s an abundance of activities around the capital city region over the next three days. The Brewery Arts Center hosts a female version of "The Odd Couple." Carson City's Greenhouse Project is hosting a lunch and dinner fundraiser toward a healthier State Capitol. Dale Poune will perform at Bella Vita Bistro, plus comedy at the Carson Nugget, the Nevada Caucus on Saturday, an open house at the historic Foreman-Roberts House, a Latin-themed concert at the community center and more. Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities over the next three days. Restaurants in Carson City will host Valentine’s Day specials on Friday. The Carson City Celtic Music series will be at the Brewery Arts Center on Saturday featuring Fortunate Strangers. Carson City Library was recognized with a Spotlight Award for their successful implementation of Job Seeking with Google, a workshop series offered last fall in collaboration with JOIN Inc.

Stuart Rathbone first learned about Donner Pass after he moved to Northern Nevada from the UK five years ago. As he got to know the story, he became increasingly fascinated with the scale of the journey over the Sierra, and the scale of the engineering involved in opening that route to traffic.

The South Carson Complete Streets Project design has been completed, and last week Carson City Public Works and the project contractor, Sierra Nevada Construction, Inc., held a pre-construction meeting to present the anticipated construction schedule and the completed project design.

We’ve got a bunch of great events in the region through the weekend, so check below!

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of events around the Carson City region over the next three days. Dozens of sweets are in store for Saturday. The American Association of University Women holds its 20th annual Feast of Chocolate at the Carson Plaza and Event Center. Artsy Fartsy Gallery hosts its 9th annual Jewelry and Chocolate Show with several new decorative pieces. To cap-off Saturday, the legendary Cab Calloway Orchestra makes its way to the capital city.

I’ve been working long hours. I hired an assistant to help with some of the projects that I deemed “on the floor” so I could put my effort toward billable hours. It’s been quite the juggling act in 2020. I feel like I’m being given a life lesson in what’s important, what’s crucial, and what keeps me smiling. Oddly enough, they are not all one in the same. Yet, they all have something in common.

Nevada Democrats, the day after their counterparts in Iowa held a problem-riddled caucus, sought to calm the nerves of voters, the media and other interested observers Tuesday.

The statement released by the party was short, but its message was simple: What happens in Iowa, stays in Iowa.

DES MOINES — The winner of Iowa’s first in the nation Democratic presidential caucus remained elusive early Tuesday morning as the clock struck midnight local time without the state party having reported any results of the prior evening’s caucus.

The first Board of Supervisors meeting of February will take place on Feb. 6 beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Sierra Room of the Community Center located at 851 E. William Street.

On the docket for discussion is board appointments for wildlife management, a grant application for wildfire fuel reduction, vehicle donations, and more.

With some clouds, sunshine and a weekend warmup ahead, going into the last Thursday of January brings a cardio and strength connection class offered through Carson Tahoe Health and Wellness, library activities, Pilates at the Brewery Arts Center, a South Carson Street pre-construction meeting at the Carson City Community Center that will be streamed live by going here. Last week, I wrote about overwhelm and how to approach it. But, there’s one part of the process of overcoming overwhelm that will trip you up if you don’t understand it - setting priorities.

Priorities fall under a number of categories:

• Critical priority. (Example: Something that has to be done in 24 hours, often has a consequence if not done)
• The deadline is approaching. (Example: Hard deadline, no moving it, often has penalties for missing)

Heading into the last weekend of January there’s a mountain of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include a Chinese New Year Celebration at the Nevada State Museum and the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada. The Carson Comedy Club hosts its first Military Appreciation Night on Friday at the Carson Nugget. Carson Valley’s 18th annual Eagles and AG Photo Contest will be underway and live music will keep the Silver State buzzing with excitement. Read on for more information.

RHI Powder, a Carson City based company, announces the completion of the installation of its newest large scale burn off oven.

At the first school board meeting of the year Tuesday, Jan. 14, Mike Walker was named the newest president of the Carson City School District Board of Trustees. He replaced former President Stacie Wilke-McCulloch, as the school board’s leader.
