With some clouds, sunshine and a weekend warmup ahead, going into the last Thursday of January brings a cardio and strength connection class offered through Carson Tahoe Health and Wellness, library activities, Pilates at the Brewery Arts Center, a South Carson Street pre-construction meeting at the Carson City Community Center that will be streamed live by going here. Here's what's happening Thursday:
— Carson City Health and Human Services will host its Point in Time Count of our area's homeless. They also host of a resource fair for the homeless from 8 to 10 a.m. at the Carson City Community Center, 851 East William Street. The Salvation Army and the St. Vincent de Paul Society are supporting this effort by providing and serving a hot and cold breakfast.
— Capital City Arts Initiative presents 'Photo Finished 2020' exhibition. Daily through March 26. The Capital City Arts Initiative announces its exhibition, Photo Finished 2020, at the Community Development Building, the Brick, 108 E Proctor Street, Carson City. Nine students from Carson High School’s Advanced Photography program have work in the exhibit. The free exhibition is available to the public through March 26, 2020, Mondays through Fridays, 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. The Carson High students include Jackie Garza, Ansley Griffin, Karla Herrera, Meagan Kiesow, Kayee Konze, Kailee Luschar, Vanessa Martinez, Haley Trost, and Valerie Wamsley. The artists are all students in Kara Ferrin’s Advanced Photography class.
— Capital City Arts Initiative Presents: Saludos Amigos. 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents its exhibition, "Saludos Amigos", by artist Justin Favela at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery. The exhibition will be in the gallery from now through January 29, 2020. The Courthouse is located at 885 E Musser Street, Carson City. The reception and the exhibition are free and the public is cordially invited. The gallery is open Monday through Friday. In this installation, Favela will collage imagery from famous animated films that depict Latin American culture. Using his signature "piñata style" Favela will make large scale murals with tissue paper and glue that will break down images from films like “The Three Caballeros”, “The Emperor's New Groove” and “Coco.”
— Nevada Artists Association New Year's Show. NAA presents it's New Year's Show with 124 entries by member artists. Additionally, water colorist, Melanie Walters and potter, Nancy Brownrigg are our Featured Artists and have their exhibits on the back wall of the Gallery. These shows run through Feb. 14. The Gallery is located at 449 W. King Street and is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. everyday, except Monday. — Cardio and Strength Connection class offered through Carson Tahoe Wellness. If you've had problems with your heart, or have diabetes, a healthy lifestyle is the best way to get you feeling like you should. We've created Cardio and Strength Connection to help you develop a healthy exercise program in a safe and comfortable environment. Come join us every Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Health and Wellness Institute, Suite 250, 1470 Medical Pkwy. Cost: $10 monthly.
— Carson City Library hosts Family Storytime. 11:30 to 12:15 a.m. These are both the same and last 45 minutes. Weekly themed singing, stories, finger-plays, or art centered around a book. Participants 9 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver of at least 13 years of age at all times. 900 North Carson Street.
— Elder law basics and power of attorney presentation. 4 p.m. Hosted by Carson Tahoe Care Center. Are you confused by the numerous legal documents that older adults need? It is important to know your options and what is required for each person when it comes to power of attorney and other aspects of financial planning such as; advance directives, estate planning and long-term care options. Join John Smith, elder law attorney, for a workshop that covers the basics of elder law, and what you and your family should consider to plan for you as you age. — LEGO Club for kids at Carson City Library. 4 to 6 p.m. Build self-led creations through hands-on learning with LEGO Education materials. Participants 9 and under must be accompanied by a caregiver of at least 13 years of age at all times. 900 North Roop Street.
— Pilates mat classes offered at the Brewery Arts Center. 5:30 p.m. If you are looking to strengthen your abdomen, hips, legs, arms, as well as maintain good posture, then Pilates is for you! It also has a strong mind/body connection that gives you an low impact targeted core workout. You’ll get stronger with more sculpted muscles and gain flexibility which can give you a better sense of well being all around. Pilates is great for any fitness level or age as it can be tailored to your individual needs. Prices: $10, Drop-in, $6 class when purchased by the month or $80 for 10-pack. Classes are Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Brewer Arts Center, Upstairs Ballroom, 449 W. King Street, Carson City.
— South Carson Street Project timeline, design plans to be highlighted at meeting. 6 p.m. The South Carson Complete Streets Project design is complete, Carson City Public Works and the project contractor, Sierra Nevada Construction, Inc., will be hosting a pre-construction meeting to present the anticipated construction schedule and the completed project design. The meeting will be held on Thursday, January 30, 2020, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center, in the Sierra Room, located at 851 E. William St., Carson City.
— Swing Dancing at Sassafras. 7:30 p.m. Hosted by Yaple's Ballroom Dance Studio. Support the restaurant by grabbing dinner first (we will be there at 6 pm). Then get ready for a group swing dance lesson at 7:30 pm, followed by a mini Swing Social till 9 pm. Cost is $10 Register online at Yaple’s Ballroom.
