Valentine's Day happenings, BAC's Celtic series, music, comedy and more: Carson City region prepares for weekend

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities over the next three days. Restaurants in Carson City will host Valentine’s Day specials on Friday. The Carson City Celtic Music series will be at the Brewery Arts Center on Saturday featuring Fortunate Strangers. Combined with live music and comedy at the Carson Nugget, the Carson City region is in store for a busy three days. Read on for more information.

Friday, February 14
Valentine's Day Blood Drive. 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Vitalant-Northern Nevada, 256 E. Winnie Ln. in Carson City. Experience the awe. Life-saving blood offers second chances and many tomorrows to those who depend on it. The process only takes about an hour and is one of the easiest ways to give back to your community. If you've never donated blood before, we encourage you to try. Make your appointment.

Muscle Powered Friday Morning Walk. 9 a.m. Meet in front of Starbucks at 3325 Retail Drive off College Parkway. Come join Muscle Powered for a free, guided group walk, hike, or ride around Carson City!

Valentine's Day Craft Fair at the Carson Mall. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 1313 S. Carson St. Let's Celebrate Valentine's Day. Join me with my Color Street at the Carson mall with some other vendors. Come by and make a Valentine for a Senior that will be taken to local retirement homes. Everyone who stops by my booth, On The Fly Nails by Amber and tries on a Sample, gets entered into a drawing.

Carson City Smooch a Pooch hosted by the Nevada Humane Society. 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 549 Airport Rd. Looking for some adorable professional Valentine's Day themed photos of your animals? We have you covered! Nevada Humane Society will have a professional pet photography session. Photos are $5 per pose. Please keep in mind that dogs actually don't liked to be kissed, but there are plenty of other poses you can do with your dog that will keep them happy!

Coin Press Demonstrations at the Nevada State Museum. 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 600 N. Carson St. Every Friday and Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. we hold historic Coin Press No. 1 demonstrations in the 150 year old Carson City Mint building. If they wish, visitors may purchase a planchet (coin blank) in the Museum Store and bring it to the Coin Press No. 1 gallery to have it minted just for them.

Valentine's Day at the Fox Brewpub. 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. at 310 S. Carson St. Come celebrate Valentine’s Day at The Fox! We have several dinner specials for all to enjoy with a fresh garden salad. This is an event you don’t want to miss out on!

Valentine's Day Dinner at Red's Old 395 Grill in Carson City. Don’t forget to set a reservation for Valentine’s Day at Red’s Old 395 Grill at 1055 S. Carson St. Every couple will be entered into a drawing to win a gift basket including a $50 Red's gift card, 2 movie tickets, and a bottle of Cabernet! Forest Service 'Ski with a Ranger' at Lake Tahoe's Heavenly Mountain. 1 p.m. at the top of Heavenly Gondola. The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit invites you to Ski with a Ranger at Heavenly Mountain Resort beginning Friday, Jan. 31, 2020. Tours begin at Tamarack Lodge, at the top of the Heavenly Gondola every Friday at 1 p.m. The tours last approximately one-hour and continue through March 27, 2020, weather permitting.

Experience Virtual Reality at the Carson City Library. 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. at 900 N. Roop St. Join us every Friday from 2:30 pm to 5:30 p.m. to experience Virtual Reality! Using the latest technology, Virtual Reality allows you to experience new places and situations in a computer simulated world. Discover what it’s like to see dinosaurs up close, view art from around the world in a single museum, or blast alien ships in a virtual world. Must have waiver signed.

Valentine's Day at Bella Vita Bistro. 4 p.m. at 1304 S. Stewart St. Make a reservation for our Valentine’s Day Dinner! We will be serving our full menu plus some special menu items listed below! Valentine's Day Night Out at Cucina Lupo. 4 to 9 p.m. at 308 N. Valentine's Day Dinner at Battle Born Social. 5 p.m. at 318 N. Short Romance Film Competition at the Carson Nugget. 6 p.m. at 507 N. Carson St. Six teams of Carson City area filmmakers are making romance short films in one week. The films will be screened starting at 6 p.m. with buffet dinner, 50/50 raffle and an "It's a Date" teaser on Friday, Feb. 14.

A to Zen's Valentine's Day Open Mic Night. 6 to 10 p.m. at 1803 N. Carson St. Hosted by local recording artist and radio personality Canyon White, come enjoy the night with A to Zen! Live acts, dinner, dancing and drinking will be available. Free flowers will be out for the ladies. No reservations are required and no cover charge.

The Odd Couple to premier at the Brewery Arts Center. 7 p.m. at the Brewery Arts Center, 449 W. King St. Carson City’s theater company, Proscenium Players Inc., is bringing the female version of The Odd Couple to the BAC’s Black Box Theater from February 14-23 for two weekend’s worth of performances.

Muscle Powered Trash Mob to clean Ambrose Carson River Natural Area. 9 a.m. Meet at Ambrose Carson River Natural area, located 1.3 miles south of Highway 50 on Deer Run Road. The Carson City Trash Mob will set out Saturday, Feb. 15 to clean up the Ambrose Carson River Natural Area. Anyone is welcome to join in the effort, organized by Muscle Powered.

Early Carson City voting in Nevada Democratic Caucus process begins Saturday. 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the rear of the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William St. Starting this weekend, Nevada's Democrats will have an opportunity to cast early votes for up to five candidates, in preference order, who are still in the running for delegates to the county, state and national conventions that will select the Democratic nominee for November's presidential election.

Guided snowshoe hikes with a ranger on the Carson Ranger District. 10 a.m. at Tahoe Meadows, one mile southwest of the summit of Nevada State Route 431 Mt. Rose Highway. The Carson Ranger District on the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest is pleased to announce the return of the popular Forest Ranger-led snowshoe walks. The walks begin this Saturday, Jan. 25, and will be offered every Saturday through March 28.

Dayton Early Voting for Democratic Caucus. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Dayton Senior Center, 320 Dayton Valley Rd. Nevada's Democrats will have an opportunity to cast early votes for up to five candidates, in preference order, who are still in the running for delegates to the county, state and national conventions that will select the Democratic nominee for November's presidential election.

Pokemon Club at the Carson City Library. 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at 900 N. Roop St. Learn how to play the Pokemon trading card game. Each month will focus on a new skill. Join the fun and meet new friends! Must be able to add, subtract, and do basic math.

Carson City Celtic Music Series continues with Fortunate Strangers in concert. 7 p.m. at the Brewery Arts Center, 449 W. King St. Fortunate Strangers is a West Coast band featuring Scottish and Irish songs. The band combines the experience of three performers from the San Francisco Bay Area and the High Sierra. They will be performing Saturday, Feb. 15, at the Brewery Arts Center in Carson City.

Come join Muscle Powered for a free, guided group walk, hike, or ride around Carson City. Muscle Powered is a local non-profit organization that promotes walking, hiking, biking and trail building.

UPDATE 12:42PM: Southbound I-580 in Carson City was opened as of around 11 a.m., said a Nevada State Police spokeswoman, who provided more details of the fatal crash that happened early Wednesday morning.

Both the driver of a car and a truck involved in the crash died. Their names have not been released pending notification of family members. The car, which was going the wrong way — northbound in the southbound lane — struck the truck and caught on fire, according to a NSP preliminary investigation thus far. The vehicle makes are unknown at this time.

Dayton Elementary School in Lyon County was honored Wednesday along 13 other schools including Carson High in Carson City as a Nevada Purple Star School.

Schools receiving the designation have committed to supporting the educational and social-emotional needs of military-connected children and their families.

Junior Park Ranger Day is back this Saturday, April 27 at Riverview Park in Carson City.

Junior Park Ranger Day is an annual event dedicated to help kids complete their Junior Ranger Adventure Guides and be sworn in all in one day.

Carson City School District hosted a ceremony Wednesday morning with local dignitaries from the Nevada Department of Education and officers from local military bases. Carson High School was honored with a Nevada Purple Star School designation for supporting military-connected students and their families.

A 37-year-old man was arrested for suspicion of obstruction, trespassing and felony sex offender failing to register, according to a Carson City Sheriff's Office booking report.

Laura Ricks, TOSA/Instructional Coach at Empire Elementary School, was honored as the Carson City School District’s Educator of the Year, at the Tuesday, April 23, school board meeting and annual event.

Additionally, Sandra Guzzetta, special education paraprofessional at Bordewich Bray Elementary School, was recognized as the Education Support Professional Employee of the Year, and Chelise Crookshanks, principal at Mark Twain Elementary School, was recognized as the district’s Administrator of the Year.

Tickets are now available for this summer’s Capital City Brewfest. This year’s event takes place June 22 on Curry Street at McFadden Plaza in Carson City. More than two dozen brewers, as well as several food trucks, will line the street from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Plus there will be live music on the McFadden Plaza stage.

The Carson City Planning Commission meeting will be held Wednesday, April 24 in the Bob Crowell Board Room of the Carson City Community Center located at 851 E. William St. at 5 p.m.

Western Nevada College’s Veterans Resource Center and Wildcat Veterans Club invite the community to participate in a Walk for Hope on Wednesday, May 1, at 9 a.m.

St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Carson City will host its first "Walking as One at 1" labyrinth walk on Saturday, May 4 from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at 314 N. Division at Telegraph.

"Walking as One at 1" happens on World Labyrinth Day each year where participants across the globe engage in a labyrinth walk at 1 p.m. local time. This synchronized practice creates a 24-hour rolling wave of peaceful energy that passes from one time zone to the next across the world. The idea is to collectively contribute to a sense of unity and harmony.

The wise early settlers of Carson City made sure future residents would enjoy the beauty and the endless benefits that come with the planting of trees. What was then but a barren high-desert sagebrush landscape, is today a celebration of the hardiness of trees as well as the early settlers.

On Friday, April 26 at 1 p.m., the Washoe Valley Forum hosts a living history presentation, “The Reno Cure.” Local authors and historians David and Gayle Woodruff assume the fictive characters of wrangler Clive, and cook/housekeeper Vivian, that worked at a Washoe Valley “divorce ranch” from the 1940s to 1960s.

Local musician Liz Broscoe has released a song that features Lake Tahoe and the challenges to keep it blue, and it could become the next battle cry to protect the lake.

Liz has been working on a new album for over a year and she wrote "Mother Earth" as one of the songs for that album. She had finished writing the song when she saw the videos of the thousands of pounds of trash left on Zephyr Shoals on the 4th of July.
