Evacuations have expanded from the Bootleg, Chris Flat and Sonora Bridge Campgrounds to now include the Leavitt Meadows Pack Station and Campground, the Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center.

Slinkard Fire Update: U.S. Highway 395 reportedly open, fire at 9,000 acres
Submitted by Brett Fisher on Sat, 09/02/2017 - 10:01amUPDATE 11:30AM: Acccording to the National Wildfire Coordinating Group web site provided by the Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center, the Slinkard Fire has officially burned more than 7,880 acres and is currently about 20 percent contained at this hour.
More than 600 firefighting personnel are on scene, including 15 crews, four helicopters, 56 engines, two bulldozers, and 11 water tenders.
U.S. Highway 395 is reported to be open in both directions. However, both the Nevada and California highway patrols remain on scene to monitor the situation.

The Slinkard Fire near Topaz Lake has grown to about 9,000 acres in size, but firefighters have achieved at least 10 percent containment on the blaze as of about 9 a.m. Saturday morning, according updated reports from all three major television news stations in Reno.

Firefighters get handle on Topaz, two other fires, Highway 395 reopens
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Tue, 06/06/2017 - 2:41pmUPDATE 955PM: From Douglas County: The Topaz Fire is in mop up status at the present time. The fire burned 8 acres within the Topaz Subdivision just south of the Topaz Lodge in Southern Douglas County.
Highway 395 was closed during initial fire attack operations. The highway is now open but motorist are urged to proceed with caution through the area. One out building was damaged in the fire and no structures were lost. Approximately 30 to 40 homes were threatened at one time. Volunteer evacuations are still in place.

Drugs or alcohol are being investigated as a factor.
Gusty afternoon winds along Sierra Front prompt Red Flag Warning

Winds will begin picking up this afternoon out of the southwest 15 to 20 mph with gusts to 35 mph. Humidity will be from 5 to 10 percent. The combination of gusty winds and low humidity will create critical fire conditions for the region, according to the weather service.

Truck of slain Nevada insurance examiner found in Douglas County

Two men sentenced for poaching a pregnant doe
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Thu, 10/11/2012 - 4:13pmTwo Holbrook Junction-area brothers were sentenced this week in District Court in Minden for poaching a pregnant mule deer doe less than a mile East of Holbrook Junction in March.
Gonzalo P. Cossio pled guilty to a Class E Felony and was sentenced to 30 months in jail, suspended, 3 years probation, a $1,000 fine and a $3,000 civil penalty.
As a condition of probation, Cossio will spend 90 days in jail.
Highway 395 closed south of Gardnerville due to flooding
Submitted by admin on Fri, 08/17/2012 - 3:32pmU.S. 395 has been closed six miles south of Gardnerville after a thunderstorm washed parts of a hillside into the roadway. Nevada Highway Patrol said no injuries were reported, but that one vehicle ruptured an oil pan after hitting a large rock.
Update from NHP:
As of 4:20 pm, northbound traffic will be held at the Holbrook Junction (US395/SR208) and southbound traffic is being held or turned around on the south side of Gardnerville. Trooper Dan Lopez is reporting that it’s beginning to rain again in that area so a definitive time on the re-opening of the highway is questionable.
